Mostly known in Rome because he introduced public toilets throughout the city. You barely find one around today, but they were there until my youth in the 70's and early 80's and were known as "Vespasiani".

Hands down my very favorite Roman Emperor. Loved by the Roman people. Too bad he served only a decade as Emperor. Thank you gentlemen for a superb biographical account of a titanic leader. Brilliant and sly as a fox. In short, a masterful politician. And further thanks are extended for presenting a fair, honest, even-handed biography, as no leader is without fault.

*Fun fact:* There is an amazing series of books written by Robert Fabbri on Vespasian's life from his youth as a soldier and friend of a teenager Caligula to his ascension as Emperor. His war against the jews was also depicted in the docu-series "Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire". I absolutely recommend them!

And it’s the story of Vespasian and his son “the son of the living god” Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus aka Kristos (literally the Christ or anointed one). The Roman Catholic’s earthly lord and master. The funny part was they were polytheists. 🤣

Vespasian was a breadth of fresh air after the arbitrariness and madness of Nero. It was a great achievement that he was able to fall asleep during a Nero performance an not get killed over it as happed to others

Πολύ ωραίο ντοκιμαντέρ,νομίζω πως ο Βεσπασιανός είναι στους 5 καλύτερους ηγέτες της αρχαίας Ρώμης,αφού επέκτεινε τα σύνορα,έφερε ειρήνη στην Ρώμη και έφτιαξε το αμφιθέατρο(Κολοσσαίο)εδώ να πούμε πως το αμφιθέατρο το έφτιαξε για να παίζονται θεατρικά έργα και όχι για αγώνες μονομάχων και ζώων,αυτό το έκανε ο γιος του Τίτος..όπως και να έχει φαίνεται πως είχε άστρο και σίγουρα θα υπήρχαν σκοτεινά σημεία που τα οποία τα καλύπτει το φώς.

When the Romans took him prisoner, Joseph (Flavius) demanded a meeting with Vespasian. When the meeting took place, Joseph greeted Vespasian with the greeting "Hail, future emperor!". It was the year 67, the year of the four emperors. Vespasian was soon proclaimed emperor and slew his rival. Isn't it strange that the leader of the Jewish revolt knew about the plans to appoint Vespasian as emperor?

The fact that Nero was very much loved in the coty of Rome, but pretty much despised by his governors - who rose immediately to depose him (and none of them to defend him) paints in my mind a picture of still not a good emperor, but a mere populist who ruined the empire but was buying the citizens or inhabitants of Rome with outlandish privledges for fear of being deposed. Something the modern Greek governments are known for.

ER, a Note -Cyrenaica was not Libya, but was part of what is Libya today!-At the time Vespasian was a quaestor, Cyrenaica[Northwest Libya] and the island of Crete[now part of Greece] were two parts of one provice].

The videos on this channel are always excellent! I've come across it only a while ago but this for example is a subject i already knew a lot about and can say you really pack a lot of high quality information in that video and as always manage to make the bigger context understandable to the viewer: All the different actors, regions, individual problems, ambitions, reasons for and consequences of the events that happened.

I believe that Vespasian was the Roman Emperor described in Daniel and Revelation as "the 11th horn of the 4th beast-nation, before whom 3 horns were uprooted and fell" (The Year of The 4 Roman Emperors). The horn that looked more imposing than the others, spoke boastfully and waged war against the Judeans for 3.5 years and defeated them" (Daniel 7:7-25, Revelation 13:1-10).

You can’t really say his policies were just out of anti-semitism. Anti-semitism as we seen it in the 20th February, targeted people out of hate of the Jewish people. Vespasian was stopping a rebellion. This wasn’t just significant to only Judea. Rome has a lengthy history of brutality and taxation of tribes who rebel against their rule.

Would be amazing if you can make a documentary about the Year of the 5 Emperors and The Batavian Revolt. Vespasian asked Claudius Civilis the leader of the Batavians to start a revolt during the Year of 5 Emperors. Julius Civilis had fought together in Britain earlier with Vespasian. Julius Civilis started the revolt in name of Vespasian but in fact started a real revolt against the Romans for the harm the Roman civil war caused the Batavians.

There is on thought I would like to share with you: Vespasian committed one „crime“ in giving a bad example to General-Emperors of the third century and the ones to follow: exactly that he proofed the feasibility of having a large army under control AND usurping the imperial power. Not that he would have had an option - it was the right thing to do given the situation in the empire in the 60ties. In general: Not a real problem for the next 120 years to come (the good ones) - but generals of the later centuries always could follow his example with ease - and did so. Nevertheless they were far less qualified …… Anyway - the list of the „Good Emperors“ should start with him in my opinion. Domitian included!

Everything in these documentaries is a completely different version from everything else. I dont know whom to trust. For an example, according to Mike Duncan, Vitellius was not plotting anything, it was the troops of Vitellius who actually forced him to declare himself emperor.

I've always viewed Vespasian and Titus as some of the best Roman rulers. Of course some of their acts seems disagreeable from today's point of view. But the Roman empire flourished under their rule and that's what matters. In the end, all the Roman rulers was authoritarian warlords, the very thing the civilised world of today fight in Ukraine as we watched this program.

"authoritarian warlords" compare to what? What does the world they lived in looks like? Who isn't an "authoritarian warlord" in that era? Most of human history has been extremely brutal and violent. But by the standard of the Antiquity, Vespasian and his son are two of the most stable and competent rulers, which isn't the case of Vladimir Putin. How narcissistic of you to projecting modern ideologies on ancient time.
