You're absolutely right: People treat music as if it is an event at the Olympics - the long-jump, hurdles or 100-meter dash, when something as beautiful and mysterious as art can never be reduced to those terms...and thank heavens for that! I've been fortunate-enough to know a few great musicians in my life, and I have seen/heard many more live. The really great ones don't speak in terms like "best" or the like. Instead, they talk about developing a style or sound that they can call their own, and how a given player is known for a particular sound, specific song or type of song, or maybe a specific technique for which they are known. Something that identifies them as unique and worth remembering.

You're not alone. I still love Dire Strait's debut LP today just as much as I did when I first heard it about forty-five years ago. Although I love all of their music, if I had to choose one album and only one to keep, that would be it.

I saw Dire Straits at the Horden Pavillion in Sydney back in the early 80s . Worked my way up close to the stage and was mesmerised at how good Knowles is . And I’m still listening more than 40 years later

I'm one of the many that the first time i heard Sultans of Swing on the radio it was like hearing something so good you just want more . Mark has given us more and I'll be ever grateful for him sharing his God given talent . He will always be my favorite Musician , song writer and guitarist .

It's true that trying to know who the best guitar player is is nonsense. Because the dice were loaded from the start: MK is the man.

Hard to really say who is quantifiably the best guitarist ever...but all I can say is his virtuocity on multiple types of guitars throughout his career ( and especially the '80's and '90's ) , Mark has set the bar incredibly high for all others ....he is mind bendingly talented, and a worldwide treasure.

"Best" is a funny word, but I'll say this; Mark's guitar work reaches deep into my being, and can result in tears. His guitar almost "speaks", for lack of a better word.

You know they truly are brilliant when they deflect any attention to their brilliance. That's when you begin to appreciate just how grounded and genuine they are. So let me say what he won't: he's brilliant. And as to the beauty, power, and brilliance of Going Home? ... Oh, dear Lord , where does one even begin ... Does beauty have no limits? 🥰

It's a foolish debate. I put Knopfler near the top of my list because of his incredible unique style of guitar playing and songwriting. He's in a class by himself.

Absolute legend Mark is. My favourite lyricist, guitarist and songwriter. Nobody can tell (and play) a musical story like he can. Like the other greats such as David Gilmour, Brian May, Jeff Beck et al.... ONE note and you just know who it is!
