Love my bullet style blender/juicer/grinder. Drying celery, grinding it and then immediately mixing it with sea salt makes the “best” celery salt. BTW the best celery is the kind that has bolted and flowered.

I decided to start making my own garlic and onion powder after reading the labels on my store bought powders. The store bought ones contained a list of ingredients it "may contain". Mine contains only garlic or onions, no random junk.

'May contain generally means 'made in the same factory as'. It's a precaution incase of allergy but homemade is no doubt better.

I have long bought 1 lb organic powder for @ 12-14$/lb from Frontier. It may not be as good as home made but if ur buying commercial garlic, it's likely grown in china. How is that gonna be better than commercial product? Especially non organic minced. I grow about 125 heads of garlic a year and we eat it all & give some away. We use @ 30 of them for seed garlic. I personally always use O2 absorbers and vac Pac the jars, it's matter of fact that it increases shelf life and flavor. At 60 cents ea, it's cheap insurance to preserve your stores that you may really need in times that are already here and gonna get worse next few years

Besides Parsley, garlic is one of my most favorite thing to dehydrate. This year was the first year I dug up our horseradish and had some roots to peel, slice & dehydrate. Made horseradish powder. never knew you could do garlic with the peels on. That is a time saver!!

Thank you very much for this video. I have been gone for 3 months from my home and came home to my garlic starting to sprout. I usually pick it at the correct time and braid it, but it is passed that time. So I now am hunting for recipes and ideas on preserving my garlic. And when I say garlic, I mean garlic. Most will need to be given away. I have15 rows that are 12 feet long. Goodness I must have been ill or in another plane when I purchased my garlic sets. Again thank you.

I just recently discovered your channel, thank you, your videos are so detailed which I like. You cover the bases! I will absolutely try this. Don't know if you have tried this garlic hack. I keep a pint jar half full of peeled garlic, then fill the jar with olive oil and stored in the refrigerator, it keeps a very long time. That way I can use a little of garlic infused oil for dishes or dressings instead of the powder which does not dissolve. Also the garlic clove can be used for cooking as well. FYI: Garlic oil is very medicinal and can be used for ear aches and ear mites in pets. P.S. I'm a messy cook too!

This is great timing as I'm just about to dehydrate some of my own garlic to powder. Not powdering it all at once is something I'd not thought about (though I do the same with herbs for the same reason, crush them as I need them). One question though, is there a benefit to buying ready minced garlic and dehydrating it instead of just buying the garlic powder? I don't know if it's the same in the US but based on your pre-weigh and after weight, it would cost me about 5-10 x as much to buy pre-minced garlic and dehydrate it (plus all the time and electricity) than just buying ready done garlic powder. Garlic powder over here doesn't have any added ingredients but minced garlic in water does.

It's not always about price, but the pre-minced still tastes better than what much of what I can buy as powder. And it's knowing a process to learn how to do from whatever you get your hands on ;) It's just an easier way to do it fast in bulk. But if it doesn't work for you -- then go with fresh!

@@ThePurposefulPantry Ah that's interesting that it tastes better. I'm in the UK and the pre minced stuff is very low quality and high price compared to organic ready ground stuff so that's why I was curious. Thank you for the reply. You're so right that the skills are important, I argue that point myself when spending a fortune on growing and preserving my own produce. I'm glad I can grow my own garlic in my very tiny garden but I fully appreciate a lot of people can't do the same so it's great to see all the options.

Just put my garlic in .. and guess what, it has rained on and off for 2 days. I was told to plant it, cover it with about 4” of mulch and don’t water it until the shoots appear .. so (lol) what does it do, but RAIN. This is my first try with garlic and I have it in large pots, about 70 cloves. I live in Bundaberg and more rain is predicted. I may have to put a cover over it and pray … was also told to put it in fridge for 2 weeks before planting. Have done all this (even put a plastic mesh over the top of the pots as the cat next door loves nothing better than planting his royal bum in new turned soul - in MY yard) .. 🤣

weird question-have you ever made a garlic, onion and mushroom powder mix? I am wondering because I make a lot of beef dishes that i would like to make a powder for an au jus/ gravy type mix for.

Do it. I have a lot of different varieties of spice blends like that, and if you use those separately all the time, blend them! My umami mushroom seasoning is that plus thyme.

Great video as well, one question, Would the pre diced one not have in preservatives etc which isn’t good for you? Maybe a silly question, but just thought I would ask to have a better understanding of the method done. I like the one bought without the skin, but the diced one would love to understand better why this method since there is a lot less control of what’s mixed inside I presume.

I made ginger powder in my dehydrator, then mixed it with a few spoons of sugar for sprinkling, or baking. I need to do this now! Does it clump as bad as store bought?

Picked up a 3lb bag of organic, peeled garlic from costco. Pulsed it to break it up and it's in the dehydrator now. My whole house is gonna reek of garlic for a long time. Lol. I hope the smell goes away quickly.

I grow my own garlic. About 300 bulbs a year. I hate that I can’t store it fresh for an entire year. It goes bad in February. Great idea to preserve the bulbs before they go bad. February to June I have to buy fresh bulbs to use. At least I have garlic if my own for most of the year.

@@ThePurposefulPantry I grow 6 varieties of hardneck garlic. I’m in California so I can get softneck anytime, especially during my fresh gap. I have one variety that I’ve grown for 14 years. Every year it gets better adapted to my climate.

This is a very late response but I just saw this video, did you save the garlic water ( from the jar of minced garlic) and reuse? I have some and I am dehydrating as I type. I put the water and decided to freeze it in I jar but now I am rethinking and maybe an ice cube tray and use it in my soups, stews, beans etc… what are your thoughts?

You forgot something! I have no idea what it could be, but maybe? Absolutely covered every angle possible for processing garlic into powder. I dehydrated some scapes, but not sure how well this will work. Also, making garlic with olive oil cubes for recipes this winter. I have an almost empty spice jar of minced garlic, I never use the jarred garlic in the fridge (lacks flavor), but rather than throw it out ... I'm gonna dehydrate it and just use a bit more to compensate for the lack of flavor. Thank you so much!
