This is the story of India’s forgotten war of freedom. While India was free from the British Raj on 15th August, 1947, Goa was still languishing under four and half century oppressive Portuguese rule.
The Portuguese were among the very first to colonise parts of India and were the last to leave.
Goa was liberated from the Portuguese rule fourteen years later, on this day, 19 December, 1961. Armed guerrillas, satyagrahis, journalists and even legendary film artists fought for Goa’s independence.

The role of Egypt's President at the time -Colonel Gamal Abdul Nasser should also be discussed. The Portuguese were a NATO founder member. Few people know that the Portuguese fleet was supported by American and European ships carrying 10,000 soldiers and a lot of heavy weaponry, was headed to India. However Colonel Nasser from Egypt was thankful of India's previous support in the 1956 Suez crisis and didn't allow them to pass the Suez canal.Egypt was on friendly terms with India and the USSR at the time. Because of these delayed reinforcements the balance tilted in India's favour.

China wasn't powerful enough at the time to take on the UK, let alone all their allies. Even India's liberation of Goa was only possible because no other Western country wanted to help Portugal, if the UK had given a hand, maybe Goa today might have remained part of Portugal.
@savioblanc
@savioblanc 4 жыл бұрын
They had already made a deal with the British by then, so there was no reason to invade. JFK warned Nehru that invading Goa would in fact give the Chinese the impetus they needed to also claim land in India and invade the country India conquered Goa in 1961 Exactly as JFK predicted, China invaded in 1962 and took land they claimed was Indian, with Aksai Chin firmly in Chinese hands

Macau was a Portuguese colony in China. And Hong Kong was a British colony. And also China would have never dared to conquer Hong Kong before 1997 as being a communist state messing with a "British Colony" would have lead America and later all western countries to go against China. Which may have been a disaster for CCP.
@savioblanc
@savioblanc 3 жыл бұрын
@@swastikturan257 Highly unlikely. The disaster of Vietnam pretty much put an end to Western nations activly invading large Communist countries and China was the largest, after the fall of the USSR. At worst, the UK might try destabilizing China from within but the US would absolutely not even bother as by the 1970s, they had begun their move in recognizing the CCP led govt over the Taiwan. Also, China's policy has always been to wait it out. A 5000 year old civilization knows it has time on its side. Invading HK before 1997 would have been as bad a look as India invading Goa was in 1961 to the world community. They saw how India lost face doing that. It would be extremely stupid on the part of China to do the same. Plus, anti-imperialism was and is still a thing. The British and the Portuguese were actively on an anti-imperialism drive, so it made more sense for China to just make a deal with them on Macua and HK.
@savioblanc
@savioblanc 4 жыл бұрын
From the Goan perspective, they didnt wish to remain under Portugal but weren't exactly fully on board about becoming a part of India either. Plus there was a division on religious lines. Goan Catholics, who made up the majority of the state, during that time (around 60%) wanted to either remain under Portuguese rule but with more self government or the same under Indian rule. Hindu Goans, who made up around 25% of the state, were more keen to join India fully and quite a significant group was even keen to merge with Maharashtra. To complicate matters, Portugal itself was being ruled by a dictator, which made the entire decolonization process even more difficult, as he made it clear that no land ruled by the Portuguese anywhere across the globe was going to be given away. Nehru could have made a deal with the Portuguese, like the Chinese did with Macau. In the long run, it would have benefitted India, Portugal and Goa. But by invading the state and the Portuguese having no resolve to fight (it was over in 48 hours), it made India look like the aggressor, even if there was justification to invade. India was at the time, internationally touting the Gandhian principles of non-violence and even led the Non-Aligned movement. Before invading Goa, JFK warned Nehru, that while America would back India, it was going to be a dangerous gamble for the Indians, as internationally the invasion might be used as an excuse by countries keen to grab border lands that India disputed. Goa was taken back by India in 1961. China used this attack as proof that the "non-violent" message Nehru had fostered was a scam and then invaded India in 1962, claiming they were taking back historical land belonging to China, by annexing Aksai Chin. That is the real legacy of the annexation of Goa

Don´t even think he was a portuguese Hitler or something like that..Any portuguese goverment defend their oversea provinces since 1415, nothing new about it. Clearly India had no ability to deal with the sitation thays why they lost the battle in the courts and the only way for them was to invade and occupy. Pakistan offered help to Portugal...as you said and you´re right China used the indian agression. And everyone knew India wanted Sikkim..Indian tried to get Sry Lanka too. The majority of Goans didn't want to become part of India, they were content with being part of the Portuguese nation, they saw how much poverty there was in India at the time, among other things they may have thought, and preferred to be a part of Portugal, not all Goans, but a sizable amount.

Insane levels of Stockholm Syndrome in the comments. I'm from Kochi in Kerala, which used to be the first factory as well as the seat of Portuguese power in India. The kind of atrocities which the Portuguese carried out on the lands of the feudal chiefs as well as the major kings in Kerala is mind-numbing. Afonso de Albuquerque only had enough of Kerala and Kochi after the Zamorin of Calicut massacred the invading army including Marshal Ferdinando Coutinho and shifted their base to Goa. Till then it was a long, bloody war without a victory to either side. I wonder if the Zamorin wasn't victorious and had Albuquerque stayed back, would our Malayalis be as brainwashed as these folks writing pro-Portugal comments below?

Various Indian kingdoms did terrible things to the traders of the British East India Company, whom may I remind you, were there within the permission of some of India's rulers before they took over completely. Tipu Sultan for example, once captured of young British recruits during the 1700s, and stripped them of their clothes and told them to dress as women so they could dance for him in his harem. Don't act like the Indians of that time were saints among the Portuguese

I can see most of the comments who say Goa was invaded by India are mostly some assol who are still misguided. Goa was part of India since ages and part of Kadamba rule then invaded by Adil Shah and then Portugese who came in as merchants. Marath Rulers Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Bajirao tried to teach lesson to Portuguese and stopped them from expanding. Chimaji Appa managed to win Vasai (Basin) and free it from Portuguese occupation. Sadly later Brits with their evil design ,invaded india. With their atrocious policies India went down to dust. Countless Indian heroes sacrified their lives to free India from Brits in 1947. For Goa It was still very late 1961 that India waited with Nehurs stupid Policies. Hundreds Indians scarified their life for Goa Mukti Sangram. Sadly heros like Madhav Ranade who were in Portuguese Jail for revolutionary freedom movment in Goa even after 1961. Indian government did not try but Legendery classical singer Sudhir Phadke, Annadurai of Tamilnadu tried to free him and finally was released in 1969. Those who enjoyed Portuguese patronage can keep cursing but India is now re surged and will shine bright in horizon like in past with Dharma, Shashtra and Nyay.

Goa wouldn't have got developed because till 1974 Portugal was Estado Novo(1933-1974) and at that time not a single Portuguese colony had got developed even Macau too, during that time period, all the Portuguese colony had to suffer. Even Macau too had a violent protest against Portuguese in 1967 also Goa was a Portuguese colony till 1961 and at that time Portugal was still Estado Novo. After the revolution of 1974 with the formation of Third Portuguese Republic, remaining Portuguese colonies would have seen development. But just after the 1974 revolution new Portuguese government has given up almost all it's colony as it was least interested in holding up any colony and also in 1975 it had already negotiated and agreed to Mainland China to eventually give up Portugal's last colony i.e Macau. After that negotiation Macau was the "only Portuguese colony" that had got heavy development from mainland Portugal and later Portugal hand back Macau to China by 1999.

I mean, the region was under Portuguese rule before the Mughuls even entered the Indian subcontinent. And what about the parts of India that are only part of India because of the Brits? The people of Nagaland and Meghalaya have never been part of India historically, nor have the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Should they have the right to leave India? The Portuguese inquisition of Goa is an often forgotten and unspoken event by the ‘secular’ circles of Indian historians, despite various historical records exposing the gross exodus of not just Hindus, but also Jews that had escaped Medieval Europe to take refuge in India. The Portuguese inquisition of Goa started when Vasco Da Gama returned to Portugal after he discovered the route to India via Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. Upon his return to Portugal in 1510, Gama told the Portuguese royals about the undiscovered route to India, which gave the Portuguese an opportunity to colonise the Western coast of India and particularly Goa. Pope Nicholas V soon issued a diktat which gave the kingdom of Portugal a monopoly on forcing Christianity upon the locals of the newly discovered areas (and mainly India), along with the monopoly to trade on behalf of the Roman Catholic Empire in Asia. Soon after, the Portuguese sent its troops to capture a portion of Goa and set up a colony in the coastal city. Aghast by the local traditions followed by Hindus, the Portuguese were angered by the locals following a religion other than Christianity and ordered all temples within the colony to be shut; this marked the beginning of the bloody Goan inquisition that comprised of gross human right violations and mass executions of the local Hindu, Jew and Muslim populations. In 1541, idol worship was forbidden in the Portuguese colony of Goa and over 350 temples were destroyed by the Portuguese soldiers. It had been officially declared that being a believer of any religion other than Roman Catholicism was forbidden for residents of Goa. The infamous Francis Xaviers and Martin Alfonso were sent to Goa by King John III of Portugal in 1542 to initiate the process of converting Goan residents to Roman Catholicism. On their arrival in Goa, they were enraged by the New Christians of Goa secretly practising their previous religions (either Judaism, Hinduism or Islam), while also upholding their Hindu values and traditions. A disturbed Francis Xavier wrote to King John III of Portugal on 16th May 1546 to impose inquisition on Goa in an attempt to ‘discipline’ the residents and make them follow Catholicism. The inquisition banned apostasy of Roman Catholics to Hinduism, Judaism or Islam, and banned the sale of books in the Konkani, Marathi, Sanskrit and Arabic languages. The use of Konkani was forbidden in the colony of Goa. The Inquisition particularly affected the New Christians of Europe from the Jewish community, who had fled to India during the Spanish Inquisition in an attempt to escape the imposition of Christianity and live amongst the Jewish community in India. They had come in search of a life of dignity where they could practise Judaism openly and not in hiding while pretending to be Christian. India was the only country in the world where Jews were given absolute freedom to practise their faith, especially under Hindu kingdoms. Upon the imposition of the inquisition in Goa, life became comparable to hell for the local Hindu population, who were often on the receiving end of persecution and were targeted in particular by the sadistic Christian missionaries. The Christian missionaries called the Hindus ‘uncultured’ and ‘savages’, who worshipped black idols ‘resembling demons’; the Christians took it upon themselves to force Hindus into leaving their religion and succumbing to Christianity. An inquisition office was thereby set up which aimed to discriminate against Hindus on all matters possible. Hindus were forbidden from holding any public office, inheriting their father’s property and testify as witnesses in courts. If a Hindu child was deemed to be an orphan by the colonialists, the child was ‘seized’ by the Society of Jesus (founded by the not-so-saintly Francis Xavier) and made to change his religion. Clear discrimination was seen in social life, where Hindus were forced to sign public documents only after Christians and couldn’t be clerks in village offices. In 1567, a law banning Christians from employing Hindus in the colony was introduced. (Ref: Teotonio R. De Souza, The Portuguese in Goa, pg 28-29). The inquisition office even questioned natives who were suspected of following their previous religions in private. Over a span of 214 years (1560-1774), 16,172 natives were questioned and often tortured for following a religion other than Roman Catholicism. To be questioned by the inquisition office, a mere rumour of practising idol worship in private or chanting a Hebrew prayer would suffice for the missionaries to drag the native to the office. Those convicted of following another religion were subjected to heinous punishments, including public flogging, being ‘put on the rack’, burnt on stakes and having one’s nails and eyes crushed by bloodthirsty missionaries. In some cases, entire villages were burnt with the women and children taken as slaves. Large wheels were used for torture, with those convicted of following Hinduism or Judaism being tied to the wheel and then spun, with almost every bone of the innocent Hindu or Jew being crushed. Hindu children were sometimes taken away from their parents and burnt in front of them, with the parent being tied and forced to witness his child being burnt alive until he accepts to convert to Christianity. Over 4,000 non-Christians were inflicted with such punishments during the course of the inquisition. In inspiration of the Muslim invaders, the missionaries imposed the Xenddi tax on the Hindu population, similar to the Jaziya tax. (Ref: Sarasvati’s Children: A History of the Mangalorean Christians, Alan Machado Prabhu, I.J.A. Publications, 1999, pg. 121) Amidst the Portuguese inquisition, a small group of Saraswat Brahmins managed to hide from the invading Portuguese colonialists and smuggled the famous Mangeshi shiv linga of Lord Shiva out of its original site in the Kushasthali Cortalim village and built the renown Mangeshi temple in Goa’s Priol village which belonged to the Hindu Kingdom of Sonde. The Portuguese ravaged homes destroyed the local culture and imposed a foreign religion on the local population. Hindus were deliberately targeted by the European invaders in an attempt to convert them to Christianity. Despite the barbarism used by the Europeans, Hinduism survived the attempts to erase it from Indian culture and continued to flourish after Goa was liberated by the Indian government in 1961. The Goan Inquisition is a disturbing reminder to Goan Hindus about their history and signifies the struggles undertaken by our ancestors to preserve our cultural identity.

Well, some people clearly forgot the Inquisition of Goa and the second class nature racial, ethnic and religious minorities had to face during the Portuguese rule. Its astonishing to see people putting more stock in grandmother's tales than in actual written documents (I am talking of Charles Dellon's diary). Some people still want to think themselves as Portuguese - well and good, no problem with that. But if you are trying to justify the Portuguese atrocities and calling yourself a Portuguese (being an ethnic Goan), then we have got a problem dude, because it implies that your forefathers killed and maimed my forefathers and you are proud of that fact. Moreover, you want to leave and go to Portugal? Well, Godspeed friend, but guess what - in 60 years Europe has changed. If you think you will be a 'brown skin European', well, bad news for you friend, they are treating them nowadays as Asian immigrants (regardless of the last name). So either you are an Indian in India or an 'Asian immigrant' in Europe. N.B: My country is constitutionally secular country. The constitution and only the constitution alone has the final word in this matter. So, no matter whatever someone says that your original religion was xyz so you need to practice xyz not abc or pqr, those are just illiterate comments who are probably unaware of the existence of our constitution. The freedom to practice any religion and even to convert is a guaranteed fundamental right under the constitution. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly negligent in his/her duties as a citizen and cannot call himself/herself as a true Indian because he/she does not believe in its basic framework. Any hindrance in that matter is open to remedy by the court and enforceable by law.

As for the Inquisition, written records also show that a total of less than 60 persons were executed from 1560 to 1812. In comparison, 275 Hindu widows were burnt alive in the Sati ritual in the Kolkata area in the year 1803 alone.

@@cg8397 What kind of "written records are you citing? Bcoz so far as I know, the Portuguese burned the bulk of them in 1812. The only records are mostly third party sources. The inquisition ran close to 300 years. 57 (direct execution) + 64 (in jail) deaths were noted in those sources and close to 16,000 people were persecuted during the inquisition. Hence it is impossible to put a number on the death toll. Also, inquisitions carried out in Europe have ample proof that the church just loved to put people to death for not following their dictum.

@@vishalfernandes7240 what culture you are talking about? the one that portuguese forced on you. Its india , not portugal. so the way of living here should be that of india, not of portugal. Now if one says" go to portugal", he will be termed "sanghi". I believe that" love the place you live or live the place you love". pretty simple is that. isnt it?

Wish Goa was merged into Portugal forever. Then today it would have been a much more prosperous state unlike the other wethered & teared India. The Goan politics has destroyed Goa. Eu amo Portugal..!!!😘💗
