I agree with Jordan Peterson. They didn’t understand the context. It’s not about the money is about your mental health in a job you hate

As Peterson said himself “watch more”…..he certainly does not advocate dropping a job with no plan.

Keep in mind, Peterson is a clinical pyschologist. He is not talking about the fiscal or career side per se. He is talking about the mental anxiety that some people have from taking risks. This is the mental and Peterson is arguing the fact that mental anxiety come with risk It is better for that person to take the risk ti do something different than risk to stay where you are which you already miserable

Dr. Peterson is spot on. They are doing EXACTLY what media outlets do and have taken him out of context.

Peterson is right, there's a ton of risk in getting a new job. There are new coworkers, bosses, pay structure, office politics, and things can always be worse. But Peterson goes on to say in that clip that you are stronger than you are and face making a decision with high risk.

I thought I hated my career until I found a great company with excellent people, and now I know that career was always perfect for me. It was never the career. It was always the company. It was the culture of the company and the people I was surrounded by. Now that I'm out of the toxicity, I can love my career.

I owned and ran a small electronics company with my wife for 24 years. After years of customers slow and no pay, ever growing supplier incompetence, and shrinking profits we all but closed down. I took the pandemic shutdowns and obtained my OSHA 30 certification also obtained my CDL-A. Now I drive heavy haul (my dream) in northern Michigan! I get paid every week, I have health insurance for the first time in my adult life, I have a 401K started, and other benefits (to many to list)! I spend most days with scenery out my windshield like a painting! I still have bad days but more days than not it feels like my feet don’t touch the ground! Keep digging there is a good fit for everyone somewhere!!

Jordan Peterson is spot on. And he played devil's advocate on both options in a more simple way that Dave and the other guy does.

My two favourite grumpy old guys who actually tell the truth. This should be a teaser for when Dave and Jordan have a real, two-hour discussion together.

There seems to be more agreement here than they think. But they should ABSOLUTELY have Peterson on if possible.

These guys take things so literal. I work very long hours, it’s not easy. That said, my job allows me to impact lives in a big way. It doesn’t feel like work in the traditional sense. It feels like helping people & getting paid

🤦‍♂️ If you listen to his “UNEDITED LECTURE” on this topic which he has given NUMEROUS TIMES, he repeatedly says “Do not quit your current job without having something else lined up.” He even goes as far as to say to have an alternative job offer EVEN if you are just going to negotiate a higher salary! For Goodness’ sake, do your research people!

I’ve had a lot of different jobs before I settled into my career. Most of the time, when a job was miserable it was the people I worked with who made it miserable. I worked a warehouse in college. The job itself was fine. I actually liked driving a forklift around and didn’t mind being cold lol. I just hated the whining, complaining losers that I worked with. They acted like the sky was falling every time we had a problem or lots of work to do. Similar experiences elsewhere I worked. I kinda miss the summer nights with the bay doors open and country music on the little radio haha.

Ken gives the strongest feeling I've ever had of "making it up as you're going along".

Peterson is speaking to the psychology and analysis of taking the leap to get out of a dead end job. These two are talking about the rational logic movement to the next step. It’s a bit like two different discussions.

You missed the point Peterson is saying the risk is rejection on looking for new career. Not saying it’s not a risk worth taking… it’s absolutely worth taking is what he’s saying… he’s just talking to the point that fear of risk of rejection is normal and to use that knowledge to leap over it and go for that new opportunity.

Judging by the comments we all love Dave and Jordan. Let's make an episode happen please 🙏 both these men have changed my life.

I love the advice my dad use to give: If you hate your job, every day will feel like work. If you’re passionate about what you do, only some days will. I’ve always loved my career, but that advice has helped me so much during the days that do feel like work.

Jordans Petersons point was simply that even if it’s really hard to find the next job, it’s still worth it ….

Peterson is a gift from God

I enjoy what Dave and Jordan said as two separate ideas. I equate what Jordan was saying about the gap between the known and the unknown. You can be miserable in your current position but at least you know what to expect. Or you can take a gamble and hope that where you move to is better.

This is a good example of why you listen to multiple people with different perspectives and different expertises and then learn good judgement to make a decision. Ramsey is an expert at a type of financial management with a focus on very low-risk strategies. Peterson is an expert on psychology with a focus on creating personal fulfillment and peace through responsibility and self cultivation. They are even discussing exactly the same thing. Listen to both, and many more, and learn to use good judgement to make a decision based on all that input.

Remember, you were looking for a job when you found the job you currently have. So as long as you quietly job search while keeping the current job, you are only risking rejection and risking that the new job won't live up to what you expected. It's not fatal. That said, if you're 60+ you should strongly consider staying put until retirement.

I think one can also learn to love their job. I work in a warehouse, and my job involves a lot of heavy lifting. Living in Sweden, I also do a lot of work in cold weather. I didn't like it at first, but over time, I started enjoying the fact that I get to move around a lot, I'm almost never bored because there's always stuff to do, I can eat what I want because I burn so many calories (got in shape after being overweight most of my life), and there's a ton of variety on top of that. It's pretty awesome.

I'm glad they finally addressed the issue of having a job you love that doesn't feel like a job because you love it so much. I love what I do, and still get tired at the end of the day, there are still stressful days, etc.

That wasn't Paterson's opinion. He was trying to use people's excuses against them. He was just trying to prove that even though one thing is hard, the alternative is still much worse.

As much as I like both Ramsey and Peterson, I hope this show doesn’t turn into a regular “Dave reacts to” kind of channel.

years and years ago I worked for the post office. A friend of mine hated his job at the PO and I said what do you want to work at. He said I want to work in the film industry but they won't pay me hardly anything. I said "oh you're making so much here I feel for you. Why aren't you somewhere where they make movies instead of whining here. A couple of days later he came into the office and said I'm quitting today and moving to LA. He came back two years later to thank me and told me "I'm still not making a lot of money but I love my work and I meeting people who have the same love of what we're all doing and I can see a great future just doing the work I'm loving to do. I always hope he succeeded but happy he didn't have to work his life at the PO.

I am retired now but, I worked as an RN. I switched jobs several times during my career. The two factors involved were work load and money. If management decided to put too much of a work load, this can be dangerous. You can always get another job but, you can never get another license. The money situation is obvious. One job switch, I got a lower work load with a 20% pay increase.

All these abilities in terms of getting and keeping jobs and climbing the ladder/developing a career are skills that need to be taught beginning in middle school at the latest. A lot of kids are expected to just know this stuff and to know how to study and learn, and it's not necessarily innate.

Thanks Dave, keeping me motivated. First job out of college and I'm at the rock bottom of a global company. Back breaking work, with hopes to move up.

Jordan Peterson speaks from the perspective of the people he is helping, the ones who deal with these fears every day. He's helping them be brave by understanding that there is just as much risk in not taking the leap of faith, so they might as well go for it.

Jordan is keen on the saying, “Don’t throw your pearls before swine”. He tells people to focus on a goal, but it won’t be a straight path to success. You miss or adjust and goals shift, but keep moving towards it. Bad jobs can kill your body and spirit. You must treat yourself like someone you care about so you can keep growing. “There are two major reasons for resentment: being taken advantage of (or allowing yourself to be taken advantage of), or whiny refusal to adopt responsibility and grow up.” - Jordan Peterson. You must find some responsibility to bear in order for life to have meaning. If you can’t make a situation at work better, it may be risky to get out, but staying it worse.

Did yall listen to the whole interview? Peterson followed that up by saying "There's no secure path...there are risks." It's not doom and gloom, it's saying if you are expecting a risk free path forward, there's not one.

I think the key is to be intentional and take calculated risks. If you’re underpaid or undervalued at a job and miserable, you should be proactive to improve your situation and create a plan to do so all while mitigating risk.

One thing to remember for me at least is that starting a new job creates a ton of stress in learning new stuff, working with new colleagues, and re-proving myself. Not a reason to stay in a bad spot but something to remember before leaving.

When I was 14 I was given the opportunity to sell product door to door. I was (& still am) afraid of dogs. I made excellent money for a 14 YO at the time. One weekend i 'fretted' about the dogs i would encounter the next week but the supervisor assured me and I continued. The following weekend, I lost sleep worrying. I went in Monday morning and quit. At 14 I resolved that if I hated going to work 2 Mondays in a row - I would quit on that second Monday. I had a LOT of jobs in my life and the only one I kept where I worked multiple Mondays in a row and hated my work was when I worked for myself doing really boring consulting. I was my own boss - and wouldn't accept my own resignation!! (humor) The only thing I didn't do well, was plan for retirement. If I had perhaps run across Dave Ramsey early enough, I would be in a better position today. My brother worked at a job for 25 years and probably 'hated' it (maybe a bit strong) for almost 20 of those years. But in the end - he had 6 weeks paid vacation and retired early with a pension. I envy him. Word of advice to the young... listen to Dave and team, but find a job that makes Monday something to look forward to, almost as much as Friday.

Dave is great, and their advice and message here are correct. However, it's a small section of a conversation, and with peterson you have to listen to it all and this was just a small part of it.

Your peace of mind is more important than any job you have at the moment. A year ago, I quit a job that I had worked at for about 5 years. The pay was great, but the people werent, and my mental was diclining. I didnt have a plan when I quit, all I had was 2600 in savings, some assets, no credit, and lived in a cheap rental. Took me 3 monthes to find another job. I changed trades, took atleast a $10k-$15k/yr pay cut. But now, a year later, Im well into my new job, love it, make as much as I did at my old job, great credit, have $20k liquid (saved every dollar I could, and sold off a chunk of my assets), and am now looking to buy my first home. Sometimes, quitting is a good thing!

You don’t love your job, you DO your job for the people you love.

It’s pretty easy. Avoid debt, save and the risk to change jobs is minimal. Make sure a job is not a dead end before you take on a mortgage. Work hard. If you become wealthy-goody- but don’t pursue wealth. It’s a trap. Material is mortal error. Never expect an inheritance. Let your kid’s use wisdom and make their own darn money. Where is the terrifying risk?

I say take the plunge when you can. It can change you -- if you are the kind of person that wants to change in getting out of the job they don't want. You have another option too - make a connection to distract you from work.

I know many friends that have been in the same job for 10+ years. They fear the risk to try something new. They feel miserable when they hate what they do.

You should invite him over to the show for a productive conversation. You both could learn a lot from each other.

Jordan’s point is that just getting to the point *mentally* that you have decided to and are going to change jobs is the start of a difficult journey composed of putting together your resume, practicing interviews, actually interviewing, getting passed over etc. all the things that come along with job searching. It’s taxing. It’s likely to wear on you. It’s a risk. Even if you haven’t quit your current job. Just deciding to venture into the unknown is the risk. “Screwed either way” is just him saying that staying where you are and venturing out into the wild are both going to have their own set of challenges

Sometimes you need to shove it down, smile and get it done. Not forever, but if you have goals, you can tolerate a lot for the sake of the mission. If I knew as a 20 year old what I know as a 45 year old, I would be much farther ahead, but that's the point. Work hard and learn while you're young so you don't have to work as hard when you're old.

More context is needed. He doesn't advocate just jumping ship without a plan. He has done this type of thing with his clinical psychology clients for many years. TikTok is not necessarily the best medium for showing the full context of what a long-form discussion is entailing and that's what JP does.

You miss one important thing. Some jobs will find a way to FIRE YOU if they find you are looking for another job! New jobs like to investigate your current work whether they do that above board or not. ALSO, getting a good job search and interviews in without interfering with common work hours at your current job can also be difficult. They seem to miss the real world application of job change.
