I used to sit on a church board like that. I called a situation like this the triple B, Borrow, Build and Beg. The borrowing and building is easy, but then there was always the begging to meet the loan payments.

Which makes people leave... so the next month they're in worse shape. I do find it a little funny how Ramsey is like don't just leave a church because they didn't make a decision you like. I'm sorry, if we are giving 10%, and now you need more, you're proving mismanagement of your resources. Our church wanted to build more elementary classrooms, so they did monthly activities to raise the money AHEAD of time.

Been there, done that. The pastor basically ignored the trustees who were trying to steward the funds entrusted to then and went ahead with a massive building project and mortgage. Divided the church, especially when the Trustees tried to make an unrequired balloon payment to save 10s of 1000s of interest and the pastor blocked it. The church survived but is now much smaller because of the decisions os a pastor who is no longer there. And people wonder why SO many people don't trust organized religion.

I've been to churches in very poor areas and some in rich areas. The church building never added to a good or bad sermon. Having a pastor shout for more donations for half of his sermon will get people voting with their feet to another church. Currently people here are hanging onto their cash as food prices are up. Not the best time to spend money the church does not have.

Wish I had view this years ago. I recently left a church that I had been with for 45 years because I lost faith in the integrity of leadership and did not like the way leadership was going. I should of left years earlier. I have seen funds drain foolishly and then a new pastor having to fix the finances over and over again. The new church I now attend get it. They are building the kingdom of God, Involved with helping the community and are fiscally responsible. We have to be good stewards of what God places in our hands.

The church I'm going to is doing the same thing. They're building an auditorium. Not that I have a problem with the church building this I have a problem with debt. One thing I've noticed is the church will always claim it was God's will and I would say no it's your will.

I was wondering - why not stir up excitement in the church about a future remodel, which could happen once certain special offering goals are met? I would be much more motivated to give to a special church cause as a congregant if I felt like I was a part of making it happen rather than the church just doing it and then trying to collect extra money to cover it after all the excitement has already passed.

Why do the churches of America feel the need to go into debt for a better worship experience? Unless the building has structural concerns why not go into debt for a more worthy cause like feeding the poor or addressing homelessness. I'm speaking sarcastically. I would never endorse debt. First, as a board member you are not to talk to public radio about the inner discussions of meetings. You definitely shouldn’t share your churches financial report. However, projects like this are the death of a church most of the time. I can’t tell you how many pastors leave right after a project like this. Yep, if it goes bad, like it will…..debt…… duh….the pastor will be the new District Superintendent or some such nonsense. The board is designed to be a voice for the congregation, not the charismatic pastor’s “yes” men. Study the life cycle of a church. Your church is about to die.

A body of believers of that size there’s gotta be a good amount that will donate time, materials and money to make it happen on an even lower price point than the total estimate!
