This is why you proactively put money away quarterly and just make the payments. If you're using your tax money to operate the business, your business isn't successful. Or, your using the money for non-business related activities which means embezzlement or you're just purely irresponsible with money overall. Budget the money away proactively and if you made more than expected, you just pay the difference.
@funtechu
@funtechu 6 ай бұрын
The number of small businesses that choose to not pay quarterlies and instead prefer to pay penalties is absurdly high. Like, if you are already in a low margin business, why would you choose to light some of your money on fire just for funsies? The worst part is many don't even know they are doing it because they refuse to read their own tax return, and most tax prep people are too lazy to mention it

Depending on the amount of taxes owed and the complexity of the tax return, you may want to consider an Enrolled Agent (EA). Both a CPA and an EA can do your taxes and represent you before the IRS. The difference is that a CPA is akin to a General Practitioner, whereas the EA is a Specialist. Taxes are all they do. Likewise, there are CPAs with a focus on taxes, so you need to do your homework.

You are correct! The system is purposely set up so that people don’t see how much they pay in taxes. It’s only when someone starts their own business do they get a reality check. Paycheck withholding, property tax, corporate taxes, labor “insurance” taxes, fuel taxes, etc are all hidden from the average citizen. If they knew how much they ACTUALLY pay in taxes, there would be an immediate revolution! The colonies revolted over a 3% tea tax. 😂

I own two businesses and I didn’t know for a whole year that YOU can pick the quarterly amount. My CPA made it sound like the IRS picked the amount. He said people would rather have money given back to them at the end of the year vs not having any money given back to them. The problem with that was I was paying a ridiculous 25% on any money I made and sending it in quarterly. I was basically giving the government a interest free loan. Do yourself a favor and only pay 15%. You’ll get less during tax season but you’ll have more money year around to invest
