Lots of family members working there means highly cliquish environment, which means high turnover for employees who aren't family members... ....I don't recall them mentioning what type of business it is, but sounds like a restaurant of some sort.

She is way too young and naive to understand that no one actually cares if shes stays or goes and that employee "loyalty" is a nice dream, or that it matters at all to the company's success. They sound like kind people and the owner sounds scummy, family or not. If someone is trying to guilt you into staying somewhere, especially if they pay low, thats all the more reason to run. I used to be a chef and literally every place I worked at tried to guilt me into staying when I finally would leave. I was one of the few that always showed up and never called in sick, mostly because I feel just like this caller. I realize that in workplaces like this, if someone calls out, everyone else just has to pick up the slack. And yeah, management would try to call someone else in, but NO ONE would ever come in on their day off to cover.
