This is toxic. 20 years?? Ladies and Gents, do yourself a favor and do not commit to someone who does not have the want or means to provide something for themselves/cannot bring at least something significant to the table...i.e. stay away from people who are gonna be nearly 100% dependent on you financially. Much of the time these kinds of folks will be nothing but a burden and a drain to not only your financial resources, but also your mental and emotional well-being. I've seen it too many times...

20 years ... did he forget to propose? ;) Nah, as a widow who had very young children myself, I heard people say the whole 'why would you date a single mum' and 'children are baggage' thing so many times that I never dated again. Even some of the comments here can are like this. I got asked out a lot, once by another widower too, but I rejected everyone. Too scared to love and loose again. Too scared to have people say bad things about me behind my back because I was a single mum. I raised all my kids, put myself through university, and worked two jobs. I don't blame her for being wary. But single motherhood is the worst and I can't blame her for maybe wanting to get her kids raised before doing a relationship at a more equal level.

So, he’s been in love with her and in an on and off relationship with her for 20 years but she is a single mom of two kids. So clearly she decided to go with someone else over you. Twice at least. And you don’t feel secure with her unless she makes more money? And she doesn’t trust you after 20 years? So much wrong.

This guy sounds like he has his issues.. however.. I’d be tired of someone calling me crying every day about how they hate their job and can’t live their dreams and I tell them no worries quit we will be alright and they prefer to stay and cry? I wouldn’t need her to leave, I’d be out..

She doesn’t want to open a cosmetology business. That’s the problem. She wants this guy to marry her and then she wants to be able to quit her job and not be able to work. “Cosmetology business” is a front. If she really wanted that she wouldn’t need someone trying to push her into it.

For 20 years? She would hope to not work eventually, if she were to marry this guy after 20 years? I think she would've done this by now and not have to wait that long.

Who said that she wants him to marry her? She has raised her kids by now (over 20 years). He is the one who has decided what she needs. If she wanted to open her own business she would have done it. She chose to have a stable job that enabled her to raise her kids. If she has a 20 year old Cosmetology license, she needs to go back to school and take a refresher and then start at the bottom. She probably said that's what she wanted years ago and he hasn't heard a word she said since then.

I kind of see it differently. He said he wishes she would come to him when she needs something and he gave the example of the electric bill. Sounds like he is trying to hold on to her and wants her to need him and she is just with him until someone better comes along.

Ok so the first two minutes, you cannot change someone. You cannot force your partner to make a life decision, unless they have the will/want to do it. You are projecting what you value on her and she obviously doesn't have the motivation to be what you want her to have. This is soo important everyone, its incredibly crucial to not ignore red flags at a beginning of a relationship. If you don't want a lazy or non motivated person, these things will usually show up at the beginning of the relationship. That's on you if you continue the relationship to end it once you realize you have different goals and values.
