Very clear example of why we don't combine any finances until we are fully married. If she was married she would qualify for SS survivor benefits, there may have been insurance policies, any assets would simply transfer to her. And owing $23K on a car with no income, that's not going to turn out well.

Beginning to see why this guy checked out .... this woman has more red flags then a Chinese parade. Everything is someone else's fault and everyone is out to get her. Hopefully, she didn't latch on to some other poor sucker that she met at a bar.

Where are her family or friends? She needs to be staying with someone. What a sad situation. And did her fiance have NOTHING to leave her? No retirement, no savings, no life insurance through work? Just because they weren't married doesn't mean she couldn't have been listed as beneficiary.. What about his TVs or computers or anything she could use to sell?

Like Dave said, she needs healing from the situation. However, from purely a financial perspective, couldn't she get rid of the credit card pretty easily? I'm going to suggest something that smacks of robbing Peter to pay Paul, but why not do an additional 3K in student loans, but use it to pay off the $700 credit card and then get a used vehicle for around $2500. She'd then turn around and sell the expensive car, assuming she's not crazy upside down. Then, as Dave said, spend a year or so waiting tables, etc that pays off the now 10K in student loans and gets her additional money for school.

Student loans are the most dangerous kinds of debt because they are not forgiven in bankruptcy. Of course avoid bankruptcy if at all possible, but even Dave had to file. If you are going to take student loans, which you should not, take as little as possible to stay in school, use scholarships, work study, a job, and living at home or with roomates packed in like sardines to get through and then get to work and pay them off fast, if you are lucky in the 6 month grace period before the interest starts accruing.

When I got engaged, my fiance and I opened a bank account together so we could save for the wedding. We did not buy debt together or anything else like that. If one of us had decided to take all the money and scram, then it would be a cheap lesson, and better to find out before tying the knot. It worked out for us. We waited until marriage to buy a car and a house together.
