Victims of crime have rights that depend on the laws of the location (state, territory, tribe) where the crime occurred. Some of the laws that might apply to you if a person has committed the crime of sexual assault against you include:
Availability of a forensic exam (rape kit) at no cost to you
Confidential access to victim advocates
Time limits (statute of limitations) on certain legal actions
Mandated reporting of the assault if you are a vulnerable person (child or elder adult)
Confidential communication with service providers
Testing or storage of evidence kits
Possible financial compensation for you as a crime victim
It is also a good idea to contact a rape crisis center in the area where you were assaulted since they should be familiar with the laws that apply in their area. RAINN maintains an excellent database of state laws that can help you to understand what rights you have.

I may be wrong, but always thought that her brother and her abuser are two different people. "He (her brother) hates the way you (the abuser) look at me, you're already dead". I think she's saying that if her brother finds out what happened, he'll kill that man. "If he wakes up he will show you what I'm taking about." But it's also possible that she just separates the brother she loves and the brother that abuses her into two people in her head. Maybe that's where the line "if he wakes up he will show you what I'm talking about" comes from. So by "wakes up" she means realises what he's doing.

No ur right. Hayden has said that the abuser is not the brother or even in the family. She said Inbred is a metaphor for trauma within the family.

If you listen to more of Ethel's music, please keep in mind that Ethel the artist and the character are both trans women, and her life experiences and art have been greatly colored by the specific kinds of transmisogyny, sexualization, and all the other forms of oppression that come from being a trans woman. The lack of love as a child, the longing for real love and handing yourself over to men for validation. Being sexualized and exploited by men, people who want you dead, and yourself. Being demonized, ignored, and forgotten. Grappling between being raised religious in spaces where your existence is an abomination. As a young trans woman from the south, her art has been so comforting to me for so many years. Over 500 anti-trans bills have been introduced so far this year in the US, most of them attempting to criminalize trans existence. Most of them target trans women & girls- attempting to take away already-inaccessible healthcare. These laws particularly affect black trans women, who statistically face higher rates of job discrimination, sexual abuse, and homelessness- and are also disproportionately murdered. 97% of trans people murdered last year were trans women, most of them being trans women of color. Things are very scary but seeing an indie trans artist being appreciated and achieving acclaim is such a powerful thing.

To me “pissing on the stove to put it out” makes me think she’s helpless. Left alone with only her brother at home and he’s out doing sketchy shit. And she has to put out the fire on the stove cause maybe the fire started to get high since she’s young and alone. “Sucking on the back of his leg to stay warm” makes me think shes describing herself as an animal trying to drink milk from his leg as her mother is in a coma and he’s all she has. But she doesn’t know what to do.

thank you for not being afraid to talk about it, i dealt with this when i was 10 or 11 (details are still foggy) from my older brother and when i told my mom she was kind of making excuses for him like comforting me but saying things like 'well he was still young' and it makes me scared to tell anyone else, i feel like she secretly hopes i wont tell anyone else so she can keep it all hush-hush and you talking sbout it made me a little less scared I'm 22 now but i still feel like that scared little girl and it's eaten away at me for so long now. I had the same nauseous reaction when i heard it for the first time. I also saw my brother get married and found it really strange and kept thinking it was my responsibility to tell his wife who dhe was marrying but i was too scared. I was numb through the entire ceremony, I felt like death when I finally went home it is such a scary feeling.

Thank you for sharing this bc there is someone else reading this with a similar experience that can’t bring themselves to write the words. It doesn’t matter what age your brother was, it’s not okay. And it won’t ever be okay. You have power in speaking your truth and I’m glad you can share it here. I want to say that if you never want to be around him, you don’t have to. I hate that you even had to attend the wedding and I’m sure it would have been a big deal if you didn’t go. I hate that you had to be around him and stuff it down for the sake of “saving face” for the family. I hate that your mom wasn’t outraged and didn’t think about what your needs are given that he’s your abuser. I hate you ever had to experience that and I hope you get support around this bc you did nothing wrong. You were abused and you must now think about yourself and your needs and your well-being. I’m sitting her so angry for you and all the people that have suffered in this way. I’m sending bc you so much love and please, lean into whatever supports you have 🤍

I always took the song as her brother, even though troubled, was the only one who looked out for her. The mother has a substance problem, possibly introduced to her through the assailant as a way to incapacitate her so he has access to the child. An unknown assailant who has complete power over the child (possibly the mother's boyfriend, the child's father, an uncle, etc) and even the mother. The part about the abuser being wrong, not only is it literal, but it's kind of like when you get a vibe from someone that something isn't right with them; basically people knew something was wrong with him but they still sat idly by while he was given access to his victim. The part about pissing on the stove, I always looked at it as the child was more on the feral side, and instead of being taught how to deal with basic everyday tasks, she was left to her own devices to figure it out. The lines "who knows how much longer I'll lay on the floor" I take as, she's starting to question why she isn't fighting back against the abuse. This is getting long, so I'm going to end it here, but I could write an entire essay about this song.

you're right, i do feel nauseous after watching this. I feel the same, i'm about to cry but my head also hurts. at the part where she goes "when he wakes up he'll show you what i'm talking about." i love (love in the way it makes me wanna bury myself in cold dark soil) it so much. And sexual abuse is way way way too common. I've delt with it, i've lost touch with friends because they were going through it, another friend who i was the first person she told after years. Her music makes me feel like i know this, like it's familiar like i've been there before it feels like.

I am so thrilled that you reacted to Ethel! She is truly one of the best newer artists we have today, her music is so layered and emotional and thought-provoking. This song in particular is very heavy, it's hard to think and talk about without feeling unsettled in some way. If you ever want to react to more of her songs, Crush and American Teenager are two songs that feel more upbeat if you need some more levity lol (though they do still deal with darker subject matter). Pretty much any song of her's is worthy of a reaction. Her album Preacher's Daughter is one of my all time favorites.

I think people should check out the lyrics on Genius as Ethel Cain herself annotates certain parts of the lyrics to give a better insight/context into what she meant with certain verses. It's strongly suggested that the abuser is a third person unrelated to the siblings, an older man with a family and child of his own. Take this verse into consideration: "He hates the way you look at me, You're already dead"; He (presumably the older brother) hates the way you (presumably the the third person) looks at me. This line suggests there are three people, not two. - Ethel Cain herself annotated that: "She assures him her older brother knows and hates him for it, and he’ll get what’s coming to him eventually." Now take this verse into consideration: "If he wakes up, he’ll show you what i’m talking about," - Ethel mentions how : "She (the sister) promises that if her brother can ever catch a break from his own plagues, he’ll punish the man (the abuser)." Throughout the song, I never got the feeling the older brother has a child of his own, nor is the actual abuser, though there could be an inappropriate relationship born from generational trauma.

Tw//sa and incest I always saw the ”does she know her Daddys a rapist” and “if he wakes up he’ll show you what I’m talking about” as direct lines that fit together. The topics that can be touched by you reacting to the full album are very useful and needed by so many people, BUT I really think that this album is a piece full of all that you felt just with this one song. i think that youtube isn't gonna promote this kind of content and sadly Ethel doesn't have a huge fan base to support this videos. if you decide to continue to post about her I will be impressed and grateful for your bravery but if you don't, we completely understand that this is hard. we love your content, nobody is doing what you do, in the way and with the nuance that you have.❤

Oh god…. I could only listen until the middle cause it was hard. Thank u for your thorough analysis Mere❤ I recommend you to listen to Florence and the Machine, particularly to King, Hunger or Various Saints and Storms. The themes in her songs vary so much. She is literally a mermaid on earth (there is kinda an intrinsic connection between her and water, the ocean). This shows in several of her songs. Another recommended artist is Weyes Blood. Well, I can’t put into words what I feel when I listen to her. Her voice is reminiscent of magic, purity, and a mix of galactic, powerful energy that covers up your entire body, particularly when you listen to Movies. Too hyperbolic but that is what I feel 💜 haha. Movies and Andromeda are fantastic! Their sounds are most unique. You will not regret. Also you kinda remind me of Florence! Xoxo💜

This is my favorite Ethel song I’m so glad you’re getting into her! I’d also suggest artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Florence + The Machine, deep artists to digest but won’t make you feel as disgusted 💜

Thank you for sharing this and you can hopefully see from the comment section that you are not alone. Sharing this is brave and keep in mind that there’s someone not ready to even acknowledge what happened as real within themselves and they may be reading this and understanding how prevalent this experience is. I hate how you were treated when you talked about it to your mother. Sounds like you were treated like the perpetrator, not the victim. It’s not okay and I hope you are getting support in the ways you can. Sending you so much love.

Mere, the first season of "True Detective" was probably one of the best shows to come out in the last decade. Omg it was so good & SHOOK me to my core. I thought of it immediately when this song started. I haven't heard this song before, so I'm here reacting with you. I had to pause at about 11 minutes in to go pet my dog and cat, because Holy moly, this was difficult. We were definitely making the same face. I got choked up too. I hope you're doing okay, this was tough. I wanna hug you through the screen because I think we both need it. 💜💜

I think that Ethel explained the lyrics to this song. The older brother wasn’t the abuser, but he was protecting her from their molesting father.

first time seeing one of your videos and omg you were going through it... don't worry though that's pretty much how everyone feels listening to ethel's music for the first time. hayden (ethel's real name) is an amazing storyteller and she certainly doesn't hold back when it comes to telling the story she wants to tell

I really recommend doing a full reaction to preachers daughter. While my fave body of works from her are the EPs carpet bed and inbred, preachers daughter is literally the thesis statement of who Ethel is and her story. She falls into the wrong crowd, gets trafficked, forced into sex work, killed, then eaten. As dark as it is, it's a very powerful record that discusses intergenerational trauma, religious trauma, and struggles with family and life in the south. She's following it up with the preachers daughter b sides which are about her first love and teenage years.

Ethel Cain shall eternally be recognized as an extraordinarily courageous and resilient woman. Present-day popular music typically avoids exploring specific topics and fails to venture into the depths of darkness that she fearlessly embraces. In the current music landscape, songs predominantly revolve around relationships breaking apart, enduring hardships, and eventually healing. However, Ethel Cain, particularly through her remarkable full-length album "Preacher's Daughter," weaves a mesmerizing narrative of trauma and harrowing experiences that sets her apart and grants her an unparalleled uniqueness. The countless times I've immersed myself in the haunting melodies of "Inbred" and "Preacher's Daughter," absorbing her heartfelt cries of pain, it becomes impossible for tears not to stream down my face, and an eerie sensation to travel down my spine. When I saw her live the connection I felt in her voice as if I had grown with up with her and know that it was just me and her against the world.

I love this song so, so much but I can’t listen to it often because of how haunting and sad it feels… Like some other people said in the comments, it kind of reminds me of things that happened to me. Thank you so much for the video. If you do another Ethel Cain video I would love if you did Crush (also from the Inbred EP) or any of the songs on her album Preacher’s Daughter.

I have not lived through this, but as someone whose boyfriend has dealt with SA as a child, this song always makes me scream and sob as I think of him. The fact that these things happen yet so often go unnoticed tears me apart. Ethel truly captures the essence of despair and sadness. Incredible reaction - I could tell it definitely struck you hard.

You should do some Lingua Ignota. Similar to this, it does have really heavy themes, but I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. I basically describe Ethel Cain as a middle point between Lana Del Rey and Lingua Ignota, if that gives any context. Both of the songs "How Do You Doubt Me Now Traitor" and "I Who Bend The Tall Grasses" are the best examples. Its basically a response to being abused by someone you were close with and trusted heavily, and it frames this abuse as if its a betrayal of biblical proportions. Very interesting stuff, but also very heavy.
