I don’t know what some ppl were expecting from her reaction. Lana fans have known since forever that Lana’s music around this time is about TOXIC relationships. Of course a therapist who specializes on helping ppl get out of these toxic cycles is not going to be like “YASS LANA, KEEP DOING THIS”. Just appreciate her honest reaction and the advice she gives. :)

the thing with Lana is that she had a very romanticized vision of America, but the best part of being her fan for all these years is seeing how much she matured! You should react to "Looking For America" by her! you can actually see in this song that she's way more mature and aware

The “I believe in the country america used to be” is about the glamour of the old world, but also the idea of freedom that comes from the 60s and 70s with the hippie culture and Hollywood (recurring themes in lana’s discography - looking for the past to find answers)

America has facets. There a things that could be brought back and things that could stay on the past. We should not just move on if something good is missing, and you can’t reduce America’s past to “only bad things”, this is very simplistic. Not saying that you did! I love your videos. Just saying that everybody should have an open mind about this kind of provocative statements, and Lana has a lot of them, and that’s why I love her, she doesn’t fit in a determined box

To me, the sentence about how the country used to be is more in reference to her whole Americana aesthetic. She frequently talks about this in her songs, longing for the 50s-70s and kinda taking on personas from that time period. In Brooklyn Baby, she mentions the “freedom land of the 70s”, and as Ride is also about freedom, I definitely think there’s a connection there rather than it being a more political take I suppose! Also, she is VERY much against using her Americana vibe nowadays as she thinks it has more negative implications compared to a decade or two ago when she first started using it. Thank you for the reaction as always
@bluewescott4631
@bluewescott4631 Жыл бұрын
yeah, and i think her americana has always been based in something thats more of a myth or exageration than what ever actually existed, and her saying she believes in what the country used to be is almost like her just saying she believes in the american dream and the american myth or whatever, not necessarily anything rooted in facts/history

Lanas whole aesthetic in her born to die era was very old hollywood glamour and that's what she misses and longs for, she wasn't that educated back then and because of that she maybe wasn't very aware about the bad things in that time period, she just focuses on the aspects of america that she feels are good. she said she feels like she was born in the wrong era, she basically has anemoia for the 50's, which is a nostalgia for a time you've never known, she pretty much has that sense of wistful nostalgia for an idealised version of america in her head.

i think she's talking about the american dream when she says "the country america used to be", basically an america that doesn't exist, but people still had it in their hearts and their imaginatinos. in an interview about her album Norman Fucking Rockwell! she said she was thinking about what the american dream used to be and what it is now (basically, dead) while thinking about Norman Rockwell's paintings, and thinking what he would have to say about that... and that's why she named it NFR.

You make a good point about strangers treating you better than your family sometimes. If Lana had a mother that told her she had no moral compass, that she would end up in institutions, and sent her away from home…she probably did feel as if strangers were way more welcoming

Thank you for reacting to this. This song is my anthem right now. I'm in my 20s and moving out of my parents house. I won't go into the whole story, but it's very toxic for me at their place. They have very strict gender roles, I wasn't even allowed to move out until I got married (I am not married) I wasn't allowed to paint my nails, I was home schooled and not allowed to go to college. I don't know what is real or fake anymore cause of the things my parents have told me. I too am so very tired of feeling f-ing crazy. But all I could do all these years, and even now as pack up the rest of my things today, is just ride.

Listen, we ask for your genuine reactions, so no one need be pissed when you give us your GENUINE reaction…WE asked for it! So, you just do you, Mere! I love her Tennessee Williams quote on believing in the kindness of strangers. That has always been one of my favorites. And in the song and this video Lana did what Lana does: She provokes…she’s raw, she’s risky, she goes against the grain, and she waits to gauge our response. That’s not taking anything away from Lana the artist. She is and will always be brilliant in my opinion. But, at some point we need to step back and honor the fact that she is first and foremost, a performer. I think if we’re sticking with Lana…maybe do “This is What Makes Us Girls,” “Carmen” (which also references the kindness of strangers), “Gods & Monsters.” Oh Mere, you will TRIP over that one! You know…One or ALL of those would work for us. 😂

You are not too judgey, I saw things in a completely different way but that’s art. I appreciate your insight it gave me a completely different view. Some songs you could do next are: beautiful & change. I love your idea of doing a whole album though ❤ ❤

i think when she says “i believe in the country america used to be” she means like the portrayal of that typical american dream, freedom in a sense

To be completly honest, i'm big Lana fan since 2012 when i discovered her, i looooove Ride music video, song and lyrics, trust me I'm Lana STAN. That being said not everybady have to romanticize everything in the same way, when i was watching your reaction to Ride and your face expression i did NOT felt offended at all, i was even smilig seeing your reactions. We all have different experiences and i completli understand where you are coming from Mere. So dont warry, be yourself, have authentic reactions, thats why we are here. And I would like to thank you, to help me understand even more Lana's music, and see different perspective from different points of view, because i think Lana have something like hmm.. her songs have strong metter or message, but can be flexible in interpretation at the same way. Also in regards to something that a few videos ago happend, when peopple ware saying something like "Therapist needs to go to therapy" Oh GOD i would love to have terapist that is not afraid to say that, knowing that person, that is taking care and helping me with my mental health also know this struggle, bring some kind of safeness to me. Love you Mere, check out Shades of cool by Lana :D
