Brooks' storyline broke my heart. He's been imprisoned for so long, that he's unable to adjust to the outside world, and the pressure eventually consumes him. Jake, his crow, is in the same position, as Brooks domesticated him for his entire life.

A lot of people at the time hated this movie because they didn't want a movie that talked about prison being horrible. They didn't want a movie that humanized convicts. They liked to exist in a world where the justice system gave you what you deserved. The only difference between this movie and reality is that in the movie, what the warden and his underlings do is illegal. Today, this kind of abuse is legalized for the profit of the prisons' private owners. That's a reality that more people should examine.

It goes back to Keystone Cops. They got mad at how idiotic they looked. So they told Hollywood that if they want to use any general likeness to their department they had to hire someone to be an “advisor “. And copoganda was born.

This issue reminds me a lot of when the book All Quiet on the Western Front was first released. Many, many, many people hated it, because it takes place during World War One, and made the Germans into sympathetic people who struggled in the trenches just as much as the Allies did.

I always thought that King's novel, "Eyes of the Dragon" would make for a great film adaptation -- maybe even an animated film.

I think the reason the narration works so well in this movie is because this story was never Andy's story. Its was Red's story. Its the story about how Andy saved Red's life. And in order for it to work you needed to hear Red tell the story. Thank you for doing this. I almost cried when I saw the title. This is my favorite movie of all times.

Darabont is a great screenwriter, though. From Shawshank to The Green Mile to the Mist, no one adapts Stephen King as well as Frank Darabont does.

All the talk about hope reminds me of the floating lantern scene in tangled when rapunzel asks "what if it's not everything I dreamed it would be?" Flynn: it will be." Rapunzel: "and what if it is? What then?" "Well, that's the good part I guess. You get to find new ones." Good episode as always

This conversation made me remember when a classmate made a presentation that shook me about another great movie, The Truman Show, and she said her favorite thing about it was quote: "It didn't matter how much the people who pulled the strings of his life tried to control him, they could not deprive him of his indentity, of his humanity."

My favorite parts in this movie are every time that Andy gets something in his favor Like when his abuser stopped harassing him after he fought, or when he got the beers for everyone else, or he became the one who administrate the incomes and increased them… and finally, when he got his freedom But I love how he always planned to escape, it was his goal all this time, he was never in a cell, he was a freeman, in mind, heart and soul Even when he could be set free because he was innocent and they kill his only way to prove it, he shows how he didn’t needed them, he didn’t need the privilege of the Institution, they needed him, because he was gonna be free with their help or without it I love him so much! Such a powerful character ✨

I re-watched this recently with my husband who's never seen it before (the barbarian 😂) - he was so jaded by modern 'gritty, realistic' plots that he was utterly convinced that Red wouldn't make it in the end. Such a wonderful and yes, HOPEFUL ending ❤ Thank you for helping us revisit once more internet dads 🥰

I also never seen this movie and my wife recommended it to me; I saw Green Mile before watching Shawshank, so i got prepared for a depressing ending, but when the cell was empty and they discovered the hole in the wall my jaw dropped. The smile he gave when he asked for his package to be mailed, or when the warden realized what happened and saw the "Judgement will come" verse in the wall, with the judgement directed towards him. So good!

This was me!! I knew about this movie for decades but never actually watched it (I was afraid it would be devastating like the Green Mile) and I was so happy that this movie has a happy ending! And it was totally worth it and earned for all the characters, so refreshing for my soul after being invested in those characters a lot. I was cheering outloud when I saw how Andy escaped.

Back in the early nineties, when this movie came out, movies having happy endings had been the norm for a long time. It was only some years later that it became more accepted that movies could end sad or bad for the main characters.

Thank you for opening with that scene of Andy and Hadley on the roof! For some reason, it triggered me to think of something that had never occurred to me before in the dozens if not hundreds of times I’ve watched this film. The reason Andy’s opening question is “Do you trust your wife?” is because, if Andy were in Hadley’s position, and he gave his wife the $35K, she would have taken it and run away with her golf pro. I don’t know why I never thought of that before. Also, thanks for closing with Red’s ending speech on hope. Those are my favorite final lines in cinema (closely followed by “Well, nobody’s perfect!”).

As far as "hope will kill you," there is a certain comfort in hopelessness. You feel like no one can hurt you anymore, you have nothing that can be lost or taken from you.

I think putting too much hope or faith in other people or things beyond your control is where you can get hurt. But I don’t see not doing that as hopelessness, I see it as putting your hope in the right places, like yourself or your faith.

Hope can be dangerous, hopelessness can be dangerous. What hope is, is value-neutral. It can be used for evil-if you convince people to hope for something that’s harmful to another group of people, for instance. Or if you get someone hoping for something that is just plainly impossible, which is just cruelty in the guise of optimism. The dark side of hope is delusion. Sometimes a little hopelessness is a good thing-it can motivate people to actually change things in meaningful ways. That is, I think both the extremes of hoping against hope and wallowing in hopelessness are just two different versions of avoidant behavior that indulges in an imagined scenario in lieu of doing the difficult thing and confronting whatever the issue is head-on. Healthy hope has a touch of cynicism in it, I think-a recognition of the reality of failure, but with the courage to press forward regardless.

Not immediately, but certainly by the third time I watched this movie, I saw it as Red's story more than Andy's. The "redemption" in the title is Red being able to let go of the things holding him back. Andy was an inspiration, but Andy never lost his hope, his thing he was holding on to. Red was freed when he let go. He redeemed himself.

This is why I say LOTR literally saved me, if I hadn't been exposed to it and fell in love with in at such a very early age, idk if I would have been able to overcome the mountains of my life. The other thing for me is, it's that battle between "All good things must come to an end" and "No good thing ever dies".

This made me realise I'm pretty much institutionalised in my own house - it was my parents before they died. Its been 9 years since mum died (11 for dad) and I've still left 90% of the house as it was because I just can't move past them not being here any more. The wallpaper and carpets are the same, all their furniture and ornaments are still here and on display. Today was the first day I've managed to go through some of the things, I've cleared two drawers of papers, a lot of which were sympathy cards for me regarding them, and a huge pile of birthday cards mum had kept, including some I'd sent her going back 20 years when I was 18 (that hurt to find). I managed to throw them all away. Tomorrow will be the third drawer and then the cupboards underneath it. Bits at a time.

Hey just wanted to say, any progress is a step forward, and enough steps and you'll get to the finish line. It might help if you think of it as, if they were still here, things would have changed, they wouldn't of kept absolutely everything anyway. Its hard to let go of how things used to be when you miss the people who were around, but the most important things that you have to keep from them are the memories. The rest of it without the memories makes it just stuff.

In high school, we watched the interview of a black man who was freed after about 40somethin years. He was living on the streets of New York, homeless. He talked about how scary and different the world was after being imprisoned for so long. It was just a heartbreaking story. This movie does a threat job of demonstrating how broken our justice system is and how erroneous the prison system is

I spent 4 years in prison, I didn't watch this movie until after. You are right, you either grow or regress, I've seen people find God, get in shape, become educated. Then some people the give up, find drugs, get bitter, become better criminals. Beautiful movie, one of my favorites

My great aunt was never one for movies, my dad and I love Shawshank and we were watching it in her kitchen one day and it just kept drawing her attention. She couldn’t believe how much she enjoyed it. It’s a classic for a reason.

The argument could be made that the redemption is not actually Andy's character, but Red. Andy is the voice of hope, and Red spent so long resigned to the fact that hope is gone. But Andy keeps showing him a little glimmer here and there of what life means and how to appreciate it. This movie gets me every time, so emotionally powerful.

Institutionalization, the way you guys explain it, reminds me of escapism. Like in online gaming, for example, when someone spends hours being "the best, the baddest, the strongest" but in real life they're stuck in a black hole.

I remember when I was little my father adapted Red's words in the last hearing scene to make me understand the contradiction of putting in jail for forty years someone, who immediately regretted his crime, without giving him a chance to really redeem himself. Years later I saw this scene and understood. And the most amazing thing was that it took no value away from either my father's or Red's words.

Sometimes this channel hits all the right buttons at the exact right time. Today in therapy, I was talking about how I've spent years of my life hoping and people pleasing, trying to get the positive and supportive attention of the parent who abandoned their children to basically move next door and become somebody else's step parent. And we talked about the growth, of the real me emerging, every time I called this parent out on the bull and demanded better. On the growth that came, when I finally gave up 15 years ago and accepted a life without this person would be better than a life with them in it. The people pleasing continued, it had moved on to employers whom didn't value me. That was an epiphany of mental health growth. I now tell off bad employers in the mature voice of an angry 12 year old girl! And when I came home today, I watched the series finale of Ted Lasso. And then this episode, published on this day. Quite a day... Hope is a fickle friend. Doesn't always lead you in the right direction, but it sticks with you to the end.

The narration within this movie is great as you both mention. But you have to give credit where credit is due, I feel this is done so well because the original novella written by Stephen King is phenomenal. A lot of the narration, dialogue, and the majority of the plot comes directly from King’s genius. This is not to say that the movie didn’t have a great interpretation or didn’t even improve in some pieces, but I feel the narration fits so well here because King’s 1st person storytelling within the short story was so good. I encourage lovers of this film to check out the original short story if they haven’t! It is slightly different and more morbid than the movie, but it’s definitely worth a read.

Okay listen. I don’t know you, I don’t know your story or your job history, but I’m focusing all of my attention and intention on you getting a job. My guess is next Thursday, but I also have a very active imagination…the point is, it WILL happen, you WILL be way overqualified, but eventually someone will notice that and you’ll either get bumped up to a higher position or poached by another competing business, but YOU CAN do this. And you will. I know that, because with so many of us willing it so, someone is bound to give you a shot! Keep an open heart and an open mind, you’ve totally got this!! And remember, hope is…the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul. Morgan Freeman may be memorable for the lines he speaks, but Emily Dickinson is IMMORTAL for the words she wrote!

I watched this movie for the first time in college when my dad was serving a sentence in federal prison. He used to write me letters about hope and many of the themes that are in this movie. I bawled through the entire movie. I even tear up now as I type this and he’s been out for over 10 years. I’m very moved by this movie and also you guys’ commentary. Such a great episode!

I think it's possible to neither be growing nor regressing. Takes a serious trauma though, to get frozen in that trauma where you just stop. Then seclusion.

I think a specific look at prison psychology (how people get there, how they deal with being there, how they recover once they leave) would make for an interesting topic that we kinda skirted around in this video. Although maybe that would be a more specific therapeutic skill-set that Jonathan isn't experienced in, I don't know.

I agree. I liked how they talked about institutional mindset being parallel to other things but I’d like to hear about the psychology of actually being institutionalized and incarcerated. Maybe with a guest who specializes more in that. Maybe how we could psychologically create a more redemptive system vs a punitive system which I think this film would’ve been perfect to discuss.

This film holds a special place in my heart. My Grandpa played this movie every Christmas from the time I was 6 until he died when I was 12. Granted, my grandpa didn’t have a huge amount of experience in what was and wasn’t ok for a child to watch, but this movie brings back a lot of good memories nonetheless.

i havent seen this movie in a while , but it hits close to home. my husband is incarcerated with about 5 yrs left to go. and the stories he could tell about folks... the young hot heads , the old lifers . a lot of folks , especially with a lot of time typically just give up.. i.e. not seeing the value in trying to do something meaningful with their lives. having the support system helps a lot and makes such a difference, it takes mental perseverance to be on your own hero.

I don't know if it's right to say I needed this, since this is practically just a description of what I've been going through, but it is definitely something someone needs to hear in this million people who watch you. I'm young, in my 20s, and pretty damn lucky for a lot of things. This year has objectively been the worst year of my life. I lost my grandpa suddenly when he fell one day and didn't get up this month last year. My mom fell into deep depression as did my grandma. My mom has lost multiple friends this past year or two, one through suicide, and more through cancer and other health complications. I'm still dependent on my family for a lot of things, and they're also going through the ringer. My parents have separated, gotten back together and had some of their worst fights in their entire marriage. And probably the hardest of all for me has been that I'm basically alone through all this. I've been with the greatest woman I've ever met for the past two years, long distance and planning to close the distance around my birthday last year, when her toxic and emotionally abusive family stopped her from moving out by making her cut off all communication she had with me, and making it impossible for me to help her. She's been distant and isolated from all her closest friends and there's nothing we can do about it, because we don't know if we may be putting her in more danger trying to help since we called the police and they were convinced that nothing was wrong or that it was actually us that were the problem. She was the heart of our friend group, the type to know everyone's birthdays and celebrate every single one with everyone, she was my emotional support and I was hers, and it's been around 10 months since we were abruptly separated. The main thing that keeps me going is trying to be there for my family, what's left of it at least, and hope that if I can pull myself together and be more independent, that I might have some chance of seeing her again, seeing her smile again. Even if I have no guarantee of things working out that way, it's all I got. She loved watching you guys with me, so who knows, maybe she'll see this and smile a bit.

The double-edged sword of hope is something I've thought a lot about before. Like in the story Pandora's Box, when she finally gets the box shut, all that's left in the box was Hope. Hope can help save us against the Evils she released, but it itself was in the box of evils meaning its capacity for being an Evil.

Responding to Alan's comment at the end about having his sense of worth and success tied to his status quo sense of "accomplishments" -- I am retired in my 30s because I'm too disabled to ever work at all, and according to capitalism I am not "successful" and never will be, but I came to a realization earlier this year that I am actually pretty successful because I know how to rest, how to set boundaries, how to have a hard conversation, how to apologize, how to celebrate, how to take a day or a week off, how to be alone, how to live in line with my morals and with intention, and how to sit and do absolutely nothing, and those are skills many people don't have yet. So: here's a different, more loving and I think more true way to measure "success" or accomplishment.

As a kid growing up in an abusive household the thought of seeing my male genetic adult (some might say father but he wasn't that) again kept me going even when people said he never wanted me, when I was 30 I found his obituary and his family confirmed he never wanted me but just the thought of him helped so much that I honestly think I wouldn't have reached adulthood without that; it took me years of therapy to see it. Everyone in a tough spot need something to cling to.

This movie hits differently as an older man. When I was younger it was a story about hope. I see it again as an older man as a story about hope. The part that's different us me. I've done hard time for a crime I never committed. I've had friends, family, ex-cons, a judge and even a retired District attorney ask me how I kept going, how I kept living in a kafkaesque/twilight zone nightmare. And it was just as you described: Hope. And growth. Do one thing for yourself today to make a better tomorrow. If you can't get the outcome, ask who you have become because of it. And now my friends who got divorced and lost their jobs describe me the same way. As hope for them to keep going. Would love to do an episode with you guys one day after my book comes out.

This film really resonates with me. I'm a Desert Storm veteran with PTSD who was intentionally misdiagnosed by the military. I spent 30 years continuously misdiagnosed with depression and personality disorders. For those years, I was living at exactly the federal poverty level on social security. Once I got a correct diagnosis, I spent 6 months of hell putting together all the disability evidence for the VA, causing me to relive all my traumatic events over again. I spent 30 years in a prison of severe mental illness due to the actions of others. I spent 6 months crawling through that sewer pipe. And now, I've come out clean on the other side. (The only difference is that, thanks to Trump's "fixing" the VA claims backlog, I got cheated out of 28 years of that severance pay.)

It takes so much damn courage to put yourself back through that trauma mentally just to perform like a puppet to the government that you need help, and that’s THEIR job, since they put you in that situation in the first place. I hope you get a really good lawyer and I hope you get some restitution pay, and I hope that you use it to help others in the same position! Sending love 🤍

I’m basically “Utterly useless in everyday life” level ADHD, and severe panic disorder (Just..everything makes me hyperventilate and pass out. It’s genuinely inconvenient), but did I mention ADHD? I care deeply about your story, that is never going to be a lie. But you ARE gonna have to sum it up in a couple of sentences if I’m ever gonna absorb all that, cause I’ve tried 3 times and somehow ended up thinking of Ferris wheels every time? I don’t have an excuse for that.

This may have been one of the most important episodes for me. I hoped in a certain outcome through the pandemic days and it didn't happen the way I planned it in my head. For me, hope is finding that silver lining, even in the worst of circumstances. I’m a recovering heroin addict, and early in my recovery I lost my little sister quite tragically and my father, with whom I was very close, within one year. People ask me how I didn’t relapse, and it was hope. Hope that the pain would subside, and that I’d find a way to use that pain to help others.

I got to the point where I would have to fast forward through the Brooke's scene cause that sweet old man reninded me too much of my dad. True story, I absolutely hated this movie growing up: it was on TV all the time and my dad watched it EVERY TIME. It wasn't until my 30s that I sat down at watched it start to finish and cried my eyes out. Now it's one of my favs. I realized I only ever saw the worst parts as a kid. Such an incredible film

My grandfather made one stupid choice when my mom was little, and he has now been in prison for nearly 40 years, denied parole 4 times so far. He has turned his life around in there, the family affected by his poor choices having forgiven him and even spoken on his behalf at parole hearings. He’s working on finishing his bachelor’s in computer science and even gives motivational speeches to other inmates regularly… but every time I watch this movie I’m terrified by the thought: is my granddad an Andy, or is he a Brooks? I believe he’s and Andy, but this movie still hits home every time I watch it.

I'd love to see you guys talk about the difficulties when the people you're close with are not on that same path and are stuck in patterns of low self esteem, dysregulation, etc. It feels almost impossible to maintain the relationship, but how do you navigate that without causing more damage to that person?

Then to not hear anything back or get rejected feels like a kick to the stomache. You feel unwanted and hopeless. Shawshank Redemption is one of my all time favorite movies. I watch it to get those important reminders from time to time. I'd like to reccomend another movie called Song of the Sea. It's an Irish animated movie that uses folklore to explore a family's process of losing their mother and wife. It has a very bittersweet ending that's guaranteed to make you cry.

This is my Dad's favourite film and he was so excited to show it to me, we sat down and watched it together when I was probably about 14/15, its subsequently become one of my favourite films and is just phenomenal in its storytelling and character development. It's rare that a film outshines the source material but Shawshank definitely does - even Stephen King said so! Just an incredible film and it makes me so happy that you guys are talking about it!

You didn't react to the "Brooks was here" scene , though I understand that it could be triggering to some with suicidal ideation. However, I'm one of those people and I really would've liked a refuation or antidote to what Brooks did.

This is one of my dad's favourite movies and we watched it a lot when I was growing up. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it as an adult because I know it will hit me even harder than when I was younger. Even watching the clips of Brooks in this episode made me want to cry.

Thank you so much for this episode. It came in a such good timing of my life. Struggling with a lot of obstacles around me I've almost forgot about my growth and how much I've changed for good. Jono's words that better future may not come but there is a sense to hope for better myself to deal with a shit - strenthened me up so much. Thank you, guys!
