this song is kinda Lana breaking the fourth wall and just straight up talking to her listeners and giving them context on who she is, how she became that way , and why she does this. The album was released during a controversial time in her life. “you say there’s gaps to fill in so here” she’s just giving us context.

this song makes me VIOLENTLY SHAKE every time i hear it. i feel like she literally wrote it about my life. that one line "my father never stepped in when his wife would rage at me" explained everything to me. it happened to me too. my mother physically abused me from when i was 9 until i turned 17 or 18. she did everything from slapping/hitting me to dragging me by the hair across the floor of the apartment. i remember when i was 12 i was constantly repeating to myself "if she lays a hand on me ONE MORE TIME, i am grabbing a knife and threatening her." when i was 10 i lashed out at her saying i'll call the cops if she touches me again, and she laughed and said nobody will believe me. she usually did all of that when my father was at work, but sometimes she would rage at me in front of him. sometimes he would tell her to stop, sometimes she would and sometimes she wouldn't. but he never really asserted himself very strongly in those situations because he hated having conflict with her. her rage probably made him uncomfortable and he didn't want to deal with it. sometimes that's a little more painful to accept than the abuse itself because it's like, you had the physical strength and the power in that situation, so why didn't you stand up for your child? i also completely understand the "ended up awkward but sweet" line and i don't find it to contradict the imagery of turning into a wildfire. when you've been through such violence, you very intuitively know it's wrong to unleash such anger on another person. so you do your best to be gentle and delicate. but you've also only ever seen anger and rage as a coping mechanism. so it also becomes something you naturally "turn" into when you encounter struggle, even though you really don't want to resemble the person that abused you. i used to have explosions of rage - i was so afraid of being like my mother and hurting somebody else that i started taking it out on myself. when i'd get angry i'd claw into my skin with my finger nails until i bled or physically hurt myself in other more violent ways. it didn't help that she punished me for crying or showing any negative emotion too. with many years of therapy i've learned to overcome "turning into something that burns". it comforts me to know somebody else understands, though, especially an artist i admire so much. only people who have been through it know how much it means to finally be at a place where you know for sure you will NEVER be your mother because you broke that pattern.

She actually drew from Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar”, altering the phrase from the novel “I am, I am, I am” to “burns, burns, burns” and “I learn, I learn, I learn” suggesting that she has confronted her trauma and its effects on her mental state, making a conscious decision to not succumb to potential s*icidal ideations (again referencing but oppositional to Sylvia, who committed s*icide) and has decided she can and will go on through learning about herself. I actually think she is singing to the version of herself that is in pain from the trauma caused by her mother, telling her traumatized self “It’s you from whom I learn, learn, learn”. Such a powerful way to reference iconic and tragic literature with a positive outlook.

I like how she says “I run like wildflower” and “I live on sheer willpower” like all she has ever done is survive; which is completely different from living. It ties in with what you mentioned about her parents. If you feel like you aren’t protected or can’t rely on people who are supposed to take care of you, you feel like you have to do everything yourself. Which I feel like is a big reason she has been so many people and so many places and why she’s worked so hard all her life. In one of her poems she recites from her poetry book “Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass”, she says the line “the wildflower that doesn’t care where it grows” which I think holds the meaning that she’s been through so much she can survive in the harshest environments. And when you become so used to it (I wouldn’t know what hot fire was), you tend to just stick to what you’re used to. I feel like people who have been through a lot end up getting put through a lot more because their brain can’t really avoid it. It’s almost seen as a normal environment rather than harsh. It breaks my heart that love wasn’t properly modelled for her in her early days. I feel like it would’ve saved her from a lot of pain. I hope she knows how much love and happiness she deserves. ☹️❤️

@@Vicky-gi7ci Thank you, but I'm in my 30's now and got away from my toxic family, especially my mother years ago. I never want children or marriage so unless you mean "family" like new people in my life. I've just moved again so don't know anyone. I'm just sad she turned into this horrible person and chose another narcissistic partner over her children yet again. You can't change everyone. Last text message she sent me was "My kindness is limited". I'll never forget that when she needs me ❤❤❤ Now I have this song stuck in my head again. It's a cold winter's night and I can't sleep. When you're abused like that, you tend to react violently. You become what you fear the most against your will. It is like fire. If someone rages at you, you will become enraged... But a wildflower (Lana) won't become a wildfire and won't spread the rage. Why ? because she chooses to be sweet, kipping the only quality that is left from the abuse. That demands self-awareness and willpower. With that willpower, the fire won't spread around and there will be no wildfire (domino effect).

cherry blossom from blue banisters is one of my favorites. i lost my mom to suicide at 6 year old and so that song of her describing a mom and pushing someone on a swing and just those really simple things i haven’t grown up with me made me BAWL. same with sweet carolina from blue banisters because one of my ways to cope is to write letters to my mother and so when the opening line was “don’t have to write me a letter cause i’ll always be right here” made me cry so hard. one day i will have my family and i will be the mom i sadly never had. i was so young when i lost her and my mind is just starting to comprehend what happened as a teenager. thank you for your videos and im sorry for over sharing so much but when i have no one to say this to your channel is like a safe space.

Thank you for sharing this and yes, your mother is absolutely with you. Sometimes, I think certain art is brought to us to heal, especially when it makes us face the things we are without, and I feel like the song cherry blossom was for you. I will definitely react to it. Keep writing the letters and even speaking to your mom out loud. Ask for signs. She is there to guide you. As you get older, you may experience different pain, or a new kind of pain, so be gentle with yourself. What you went through and continue to go through is tragic and complicated so honor all the feelings that come with it. Please also know that when suicide occurs, it wasn’t for a lack of love for the people around them, it was a lack of love for themselves because mental health can distort things. I have this overwhelming feeling that she’s here while I type. Sending you 🤍

This song is such a warm hug for mentally and previously physically abused children. The line with the mother hit SO HARD. My father never did anything besides agreeing or telling her to stop. Even the wife thing is true, since I just call her mother, and sometimes that feels too loving. So... now I try to be sweet and loving to everyone, and I can't really express myself in a right way (So I ended up awkward, but sweet). I always try to not be angry and *burn*, but I fail. I try my best however, and when someone angers me, I become really fragile. (Like a wildflower) Basically, I survive with willpower, and running from my emotions. I am a people pleaser, and comfort myself in people that act lovingly to me, especially people that I spend lots of time with, that show me relationships don't have to be toxic. Damn, Lana is REALLY a genius. (sorry for the vent)

Also maybe the wildfire metaphor can be explained by how mania or hypomania can affect one’s relationships due to the irritation, aggressiveness and overall intensity it brings (mania’s heat burning everyone around you), which is very common, and the fact that she’s on lithium and even mentions that it brought her poetry, but let her numb, kinda makes it clear for me. It even explains the “nourish you hazily” thing… the price of being a wildflower (euthymic) is feeling constantly numb. Also, the lithium we have on Earth originated from exploding stars, so perhaps that’s what she means with to be “running on stardust”. Personally I’ve always interpreted this song as a life story of someone struggling with BD. There’s also an instagram live she did where she mentioned that there’s one specific word she mentioned in this album that she never mentioned before that just “explains it all”. I’m pretty sure it’s “lithium”.

Love this so much ❤ thank you! I'm not a native English speaker but i think it also has something to do with all the Hollywood stars that she admires (Kurt, Marilyn, Amy) that "burned" because of the fame or their past. She's using her sadness to create poetry for us but she's not going to end like them, she's creating another path. Idk hope it makes sense. *Don't stop doing this videos, they are really important for many ❤

This also makes sense due to the 'burn out fade away' quote from Kurt.s suicide note, as well as the reference to 'Lithium' in the lyrics - I definitely see the Nirvana references as intentional.

I love your reaction videos. You are not afraid to dive deep into what the artist's saying and clearly, it really pays off with Lana! She's such a genius. If you want, I would suggest you to try listening to her albums in one-shot continuity, and following the order of the original track list. The order she choose for every song in all of her projects is, in my opinion, very carefully-thought and builds a superior meaning. For me, Lana is a real cinematic experience, where each "scene" she proposes (tracks) has even more impact when experienced as a part of the whole album!

of my favorite songs! I love how you can reflect and try to understand what Lana is saying with her words. Lana's lyrics are wonderful, she is never literal or basic when it comes to expressing herself. With her it's like reading a poem where you find the meaning or the interpretation yourself, her songs are very open to interpretation, therefore I feel that one connects more with her lyrics. at the end of the song, the instruments start to ascend and it makes me feel as if her feelings and herself are spreading like a wildfire, but not that it burns and destroys but how it spreads like a meadow of wildflowers. She expands with beauty and poetry. Everything that Lana transmits and makes you feel is magical.

What a powerful song. Though Lana seems to have a great relationship with her father now. I've often wondered where he was when all this abuse from her mother was taking place. Even as Lana blurs out the word "mother" in "Fingertips" (and refers to her has "your wife" here) on the streaming services to symbolize distance, static, crossed-wires, communication breakdowns, etc., in the very next breath she sings "Exotic places and people don't take the place of being your child". She's referring to herself here. On some level, it sounds like she still yearns to have a relationship with her mother. Lana's the one who's taken the initiative to begin the healing process-- reaching out across the chasm.

Just discovered your wonderful channel looking at Lana reactions and automatically subscribed. You are probably one of the best reactors I’ve seen, Mere! Love your insights as a Therapist on this. As someone suffering from BPD, I’ve always been curious if Lana is telling us about a possible BPD diagnosis with her recent music the past two years combined with everything else we know about her life and career. Her mother sounds like the typical NPD parent who abused their child and that child grew up to display abandonment trauma, identity disturbance, impulse issues, black and white thinking and emotional instability, suicidal ideation. All of which Lana has expressly told us about herself in songs and interviews the past few years. I really feel for her if she has to suffer through this because of her childhood trauma. I can unfortunately relate to everything she wrote in this song which makes it very difficult to listen to despite it being my favourite of hers.

I loved your interpretation of this one! I always view it as the general, day-to-day struggles as a person navigating mental health issues while giving us some background information. For whatever reason, I interpreted her recognizing her similarities with her mom and needing to actively work not to be like that!

I remember the first reaction video I have watched and you knew already what she's conveying. I'm a psychology graduate but sometimes when I listen to music it's hard for me to read between the lines. I'm really impressed how you interpret her lyrics and being on point (in my opinion).

I adore your reactions!!! I’ve been in therapy for about 4 years myself and a song that has fallen into my lap that I love that I think you’d get a kick out of reacting too is Tornado Warnings by Sabrina Carpenter. As a therapist, I would love see you dig into that song!! Love ya!!

I'm loving so much your reactions!! Def Lana is the wildflower and her mom is the wildfire. I'd love to see your reaction to her videos Ride and Tropico (full version both). I'm sure you'll understand it and get the deep meaning. Also her song Dealer, featuring Miles Kane. She's screams her feeling out, it's so heartbreaking Lots of love!!

@@mendwithmere absolutely YES!!! we'd love to see reactions to full albums, each one has topic questions, so you'll have all the contest for each song. Also, Lana always takes care so much of the order of the songs to make it a full story, that you can also read on the order of the song names.

I feel this soo much 😢 my parents didn’t treat me well from teenage years til she pasted and my dad still doesn’t understand his behaviour affects me but when I started dating I did have a wall up, I didn’t want to be too vulnerable because I know not everyone stays. I’m so happy she found happiness and a way to express her feelings through poetry and her song writing. I internalised which is not good for my self esteem it self worth.

My childhood was pretty good but yes the teenage years were awful in regards to how my mother treated me. And I was a “good” teen too (except for bad grades and not cleaning my room) I feel like it’s used against me that I had a good childhood…
