This game took me a few tries to really get into, but at the end of last year everything finally clicked for me and now I'm obsessed with it. One of my favorite aspects of 4x/Grand Strategy games is creating a story about your empire, and Old World does a phenomenal job at that. Every playthrough creates such an immersive story! I really hope you make some more Old World content, it feels like no one is playing it - and it deserves so much attention! This game has so many cool ideas, and I want the devs to get the support they need to continue adding content. And in a few years, hopefully, the next game they make refines the concepts in Old World even further!

Let's get some more Old World content! That last playthrough was fascinating.

The three things I love most about Old World are the orders mechanic to cut down late-game turn length, the character events forcing unexpected directions, and the music by Christopher Tin. In Civ6 you can set out a detailed plan (e.g. going for a timing rush hundreds of years in to the future) and be confident of pulling it off. Old World doesn't work that way, and you have to be prepared to react to what history throws at you.

I love Old World and I immediately bought the DLC, wish it got more attention because it's great.

Old World is difficult and rewarding. I'm playing it at one difficulty level above the default and have yet to win the game once. Too many times I retired from a game. Yet, I keep going back to it because of the character interactions and events. My leader has been assassinated several times in the same game, my wife divorced me, my kids have gone insane, my governor's corrupt, my towns revolted. And yesterday I found my first religion and have yet to figure out exactly how I did it. Oh, don't forget about the music. It very good, even the one that is streamer safe.

I found all the 4x games confusing except civ6 which makes hard to start a new 4x. But with an oldworld overexplained series, the game seems like startable because the UI and graphics are smooth and attractive for me.

started playing this a year ago, steadily has gotten more immersive and amazing. I really enjoyed it from the get go and the more they add and tweek the better these unique playthroughs become for me, so glad to see it keep growing and adapting.

I love videos like this, it's so interesting to see new games and your takes on them. The civ videos are classic and I will never tire of your civ gameplay, but I would really love to see different game series on your channel. Much love Potato

I have fond memories of "working" closely with Soren, Dale, Solver & the like back when we were playtesting the beta version of the 2nd expansion for Civ4 (Beyond the Sword). Also, I used to play a weekly Civ4 Multiplayer game with Dale, Solver and a few others-one where you had to write a story about the events that occurred during the previous game. Damn those were good times.

I remember playing this when it came out as Rome. Romulus was naturally their leader however Remus was still alive and a character in the game. It’s going smooth and I’m expanding my empire yet all of a sudden an event plops up. Remus storms into the throne room and kills Romulus, making me play as Remus instead. I guess that made me Reme instead of Rome.

The UI in this game was really above the competition. I hope it becomes the new gold standard, just by mousing above anything you would get all the info you wanted, so simple and intuitive.

Old World is super fun, excited to try the new DLC and would love to see a livestream/video series of it. Also, the best feature: It has an undo button so if the game lies to you about movement (cough Civ6 cough), you can just fix it! It's so good!

I love Old World and keep coming back to it and can't wait to try the new DLC! I do still tear my hair out when I lose a treasured unit more easily than I think, but then I turn around and do the same thing to the AI. The revolving door spins faster for Old World units versus Civ units. The narrative events can't be beat!

Im so happy the new dlc is not scenarios because the narrative part of the is so amazing...You truly never play the same game twice and sometimes you get some bonkers storylines like when I started an game as Dido had an son who drop his studies to be an "street philosopher" untill he got so crazy the people drove him ou of the town, so he just came back to my court and instantly runed away to be an sailor but got captured by pirates that tried to sell him as slave somehow he scaped and come back to my court just to tell me he was gay and run away to Greece to be the prince concubine. 10/10 would give birth again

I'd love to see two separate videos. One geared toward Civ players, and one that specifically digs into the improvements made over the last couple years. The second one could be a TON of work, but one shortcut would be to get an authorized interview with Soren Johnson or Dale...just ask them to tell the story. I would watch that with minimal editing. Literally just screen-capture a zoom call, it would be fantastic content.

Old World is my fav 4X hands down. New DLC is fantastic. Would LOVE to watch you play more OW games!!

Just bought the game based on this review. Had seen numerous reviews on the game and was on the fence, but this one pushed me over the edge. Excited to try it!

Ten minutes later and I understand that it has lots of events and mechanics! Hope a more in depth video comes out sometime, this looks cool.

Old World is a great game; the events, characters, city building, and soo many other systems are very engaging and complex (like civ 4 on crack). Only 2 nit-picks. The combat can be annoying sometimes, where the AI will just teleport out of the fog of war and snipe your units one-by-one. But once you get a handle on the system and embrace the losses it's very rewarding. The other problem is the trading between civs, it's basically non-existant. You can either send a caravan for flat gold or roll the dice on a trade mission, where you can only choose between three random options (usually not great ones). All of the systems are almost ridiculously complex and interconnected, it's something you need to try for yourself (or watch Potato video hehe). The best part of the narratives you can draw from events; once as my king was growing old and near death, my heir I had been getting ready to take the throne was killed commanding a unit, leaving a baby in line for the crown. The uncle took over as regent, and my empire experienced great turmoil. After coming of age, the rightful heir fought off a roman invasion and kicked the econ into overdrive. Also, never own a monkey

It suffers from the age old problem: a lack of attention to the late game. Needs new mechanics for that stage of play.

I did a one city challenge in Old World and it was amazing. Surrounded by barbs, tribes and super powers on all sides, I created one sprawling massive conglomeration of every building in the game and fully leveled troops on every tile. Ambition victory! It was epic. I recommend.

Thanks PW this video finally got me off the fence and I purchased the game and DLC. I love the eras it covers, being a fan of Civ and Paradox games its a nice marriage between the two.

Super excited for this dlc, got 332 hrs in old world and I can confidently say that this is the best 4x game I have played in a long time, been a civ player since around '03 starting with civ 3.

Recently got this game on sale with the expansion and was a bit bored during the tutorial, but when i finally started playing my first game I immediately started falling in love. Then i realized they dont do future tech and immediately fell more in love, as future tech always disparaged me in the CIV games. I think my favorite aspect is the fact that theres no tall vs wide, you just have to go wide, but you do specialize cities (high growth, high military, or high civics) while still having multiple types of currency.

Potato, you mentioned civ4 but I've never actually seen you play it. I remember I once asked you about that on livestream and you said that your skill from civ5 and 6 doesnt apply to civ4 and I agree, these are totally diffrent games. BUT taking into consideration that civ4 is a legendary game and it has, which is in my opinion a great aspect, an amazing modding community I think you should give it a shot at KZfaq espexially that u do not really see civ4 letsplays these days :'(

Old World is insanely good. Like Potato and others have said, it takes a bit to “get into” but once you get a feel for “best practices” and the like, everything clicks so fantastically well that you’ll be addicted. Beating “The Great” difficulty is easily one of my proudest gaming moments. Every decision matters (or can matter, if you let it) in some form or fashion. It’s just the ultimate blend of 4X and CKIII-like dynasty management

This has been my favorite new 4x game in such a long time. I hope the devs keep working on it despite how lesser known it is amongst the other popular games in the genre. BTW, the game is apparently a mod developers dream. I can't wait to see what people cook up for it in the next few years!

Played alot in the early days of the game when it was only on Epic and frankly I loved it. I bounce all over the realm of strategy games and especially 4x's, so it's nice to see when one nails the mark. I did fall off after a couple months, as I am one to do, but watching this and keeping in tune with the updates I'm reinstalling tomorrow mornin.

If you want to do more Old World let's plays that's totally cool. I find them to be so interesting and my way of satiating my desire for Old World until I can save enough money for it

Haven't tried Old World in a few months, almost a year actually. It felt kinda bad to play back then, but the way the gameplay looked in the video and the new DLC has me excited.

Old World was my best game of 2022. As much love as CIV 6 has gotten in 2022 it still feels incomplete and inferior to CIV 5. While Old World isn't perfect, it's pushing the limits of what a CIV-5 Style game can do, and at this point I can't go back to CIV 5.

I've been a Civ player since the OG, but haven't played Civ 6 since Potato got me turned on to Old World with the last series. Didn't know about the DLC until this video dropped. Would love to see more Old World content on the channel.

I have been playing this game for a year and I'm amazed that it hasn't bored me not even a little bit it's like addictive plus religion and diplomacy is not just there for show like civilization you can actually use them effectively

Old World is a great game that can be quite tough, if you crank the difficulty up. Starting out easy, though, and seeing how grand a city you can build is quite fun! And after you think you've learned the mechanics of the game, play it on hard and, well... good luck!

Honestly, Old World just FEELS good. Yes civ is old and all that but honestly. Old World with the odd thing here and there addressed... It's a stellar game. I pray it goes on and on.

Hey potato, not sure if you’ve gotten this before but another game I think you would like, and would be cool to see on the channel, is Creeper World 3. It’s a deceptively simple tower defense game that gets pretty intense and I often will sit down to play and stand up victorious 5 hours later without realizing it. There is a 4th game that was released recently but I think that 3 has a better strategic gameplay because 4 focused a little too much on being 3D instead of 2D.

Would definitely like to see more game play. Looking at maybe picking it up as I keep seeing in the reviews that it is like a cross between Civ and a Paradox game (Stellaris, CK, etc.) and I like both.

I got into this game from a video Potato made many months ago and I'm addicted. I literally trained a monkey to assassinate a foreign ruler, and it was successful. So cool.

Thank you for the video.. the whole game isn't really on my radar... I heard there were problems a long time ago and forgot about it. Sounds like it's time for another look... wish I knew more about the base game but what you described sounds fun... my favorite part of Civ6 are often the random things, like discovering villages.

Old world is great. The order system is of course one of the best features. I also think it presents a decent challenge compared to other 4x games that are too easy. Unfortuntately I get severe performance issues late game so I've stopped playing it. Would love to take part of some lets play content of it though.

You should do a playthrough with the rewards for event choices hidden. It's pretty wild. You can always save scum but it does produce alot more varied gameplay.

The game is truly amazing, I wish they'd extend the timeline. I wish they'd make New World 2 - same premise but SciFi with planets and mechs. That'd be more than perfect.

Civ IV was my favorite and I'm so mad right now that I missed this gem from Soren! I hope he makes something that's focused on coldwar or post coldwar.

I'm interested in your input of which 4X games are "at level" of old world. I mean for me there are Civ (4,5,6 depend taste), Endless Legend (although the IA is lacking, it's way better than humankind), and just under them is Age of wonders (and it's look alikes).

I have to try again to get into it... i once played through the tutorial but never came to the end

I see Assyria finally became a Levantine power in this world xD Shit jokes aside, I have looked at this game a few times and keep wanting to try it. May have sold me. Like you say, so many 4x games you pick up and then never really play. My steamlist is littered with them, mainly scifi ones tbf.
