"Flyman" story review "Flyman", also known as "the cast away mission in DYOM" is a modern take on the classic theme of traumatizing experience and subsequent corruption of one's psyche. Like in the more famous "Heart of Darkness" novel or Spec Ops: The Line video game, reader witnesses the fall and self-contradiction of the one(s) needing to be rescued refusing the help/exit available; just as the soldiers of the Damned 33rd infantry refused to accept the warm hugs from Captain Walker and his two sidekicks only to invite their own eventual (and painfully sandy) demise, busta Carl Johnson, our hero in the "Flyman" story, refuses to recognize the most obvious way out of his predicament: the Sanchez offroad bike waiting to be stolen, ready to take Carl back into the civilization of the San Andreas. One may think, "But surely you can just steal the bike and drive away", but that is not an option; game simply fails the mission if you do (either that or mission doesn't progress), and puts CJ back where he started; the beach. Unlike these other stories, however, Carl Johnson's tale ends in an uplifting note... at the first glance... for he was able to maintain one thing which other characters of the similar stories did not pocess: hope. Hope got him out of the hellscape island he got stranded on. For Carl John did not lack the hope, he was able to kill the old man coldblood, steal his stuff, and collect the sufficient amount of trees from the desolate desert of Las Venturas like a tru playa. For he did not lack hope, he was able to be saved by the passing luxuary yacht; but here's the twist... He was never saved in the end. For the boat which found him thanks to the SOS sign he'a constructed with the sufficiently plentiful trees of Las Venturas (but at the same time tried to obscure from public eyes; one of the self contradictions that he displays throughout the story), was obviously on a pre-scripted AI path for sea-going vessels. He has convinced himself that hope got him out of the dreaded island, but in reality, hope he embraced so dearly only blinded his true judgement of the reality, and will probably leads him to a greater dissapointment and suffering. Carl Johnson could never leave the island... for he is but Carl Johnson from Grove Street, a mere fictional character of a videogame. I'd like to end this review with a fitting, favorite poem of mine: "You can check-out any time you like. But you can never leave." I recommend this DYOM mission for all. Six star. It would be great if the text to speech voices were only english, otherwise what is the point of having text to speech when I have to read the subtitles anyway.
