Another use for HX Stomp: I’m going to buy a new guitar today at a guitar store. Bringing my HX Stomp and headphones to audition guitars. Much better than either blasting out the store through one of their amps or trying to play quietly through one of their amps and having no idea how the guitar really sounds. Such a handy unit for so many things (normally it just handles modulation effect duties on my big pedalboard).

Honestly we are pretty much at a point with headphone rigs that I think they can just put a bunch of headphone rigs around the guitar store. If you are just trying guitars and not amps, then you go to a headphone rig, dial in whatever tone you want and try out the guitar silently. Although.. I'm sure many will still opt for the live amps because lets be honest... A lot of the people in there aren't trying guitars - they are playing the hardest thing they know on a guitar they can't afford, loud enough so they are sure everyone in the store here's them, trying to show off and get attention, then walking out and buying strings or nothing.
@poesybeat
@poesybeat 8 ай бұрын
I had the same thought that GC and the other stores should just have headphone rigs set up. It was really nice being able to demo guitars silently for a couple hours and not worry about bothering anybody. Worked great.

I’ve been enjoying the vids. You come across as a very decent fella. I recently picked up a used HX Stomp for fun and for amp sim/headphones with a 3 month old at home, but it very swiftly knocked 3 fx pedals off my board that I had intended to keep. Most impressive swiss army knife piece of kit I’ve owned! Rock on.

I mostly use the Pod Go while having an HX Stomp in the house. Form factor is simply the key for me, mainly the included expression pedal and the larger display. The new cab is there now plus the new time based effects. I can live with the DSP limitations. Helix is out of question for me due to it‘s size. There might be other situations where I might consider other hardware. But it will probably remain the Line 6 ecosystem because of their commitment to real improvements of models, cabs and effects.

As far as I can tell, Leon Todd is quite a good Bloke, and his videos are well worth watching. The HX Stomp is an outstanding value for money. Initially, I had some challenges dialing in tones that l liked, as the Stock Presets sounded too bright in general. Fractal seems to have done the best job with it's Stock Presets, and that likely gives the new user best initial experience possible. I'm happy with the frequent Line 6 Firmware Updates, and the great sounds I can get from the HX Stomp, which I use every day.

Had my HX Stomp a couple of weeks. Best bit of kit I’ve ever had. Gives pro quality tones to mere amateurs like myself. I love the reverbs and delays and the 3.7 update has added some fantastic amps. I was going to try and save for an FM3 but hearing you and Leon plus a few others I went for the Stomp and can’t stop playing it. Thank you for all the videos that sold it for me. Hope Lne 6 appreciate it too. Let’s hope they keep supporting it through updates.

I bought an HX Stomp a year ago and I thought it was so late but how wrong I was the best purchase for the price sounds priceless and so useful. I use it as a separate device when don't want to take a big pedalboard or use it in my pedalboard as a multiprocessor with JHS AT drive and other pedals also used it with acoustic guitar a few times ...it is super awesome so clean and juicy. Thanks, John for inspiring me to buy this. Line 6 has to pay you some royalties

I came to playing guitar fairly late in life. I knew the tones I wanted in my head but was spending a fortune on pedals trying to get there. The HX Stomp has allowed me to experiment with hundreds of combinations of pedals and amps and narrow things down. My ultimate happy place is probably going to be a Fender Deluxe Reverb Blonde ToneMaster amp and 4-5 pedals that cover the bases I want to cover. The HX Stomp is a fantastic piece of kit but will not be one of those due to menus rather than simple knobs.

I run the POD Go and have for a couple of years now, since the 2.0 update recently, it’s come alive in a really fresh way using their brand new cab engine. I purchased the HX stomp a few months back and I have honestly loved using it all by itself as well. I’ve had people tell me that it’s overkill to have both units together. So, as a guitar player, these units have pushed me to be a more proficient player and to have also constantly inspired me all of the time. Whether it’s the POD GO, or the Stomp, both are a fantastic option! Check their stuff out now. ☺️

I typically struggle with overly complex gear and eventually sell it or put it in the basement. Not so with the HX Stomp. My current setup is: mini Nobels > Vertex Ultraphonix > Stomp > H9 > effects return Revv D20 > Barefaced cab 12”. It’s pretty satisfying to play and experiment with. I’m liking the upgrade and that new Bassman model.
@NateTheMeh
@NateTheMeh 8 ай бұрын
That’s a hell of a setup, are you using it for recording? I’ve been after a D20 for a while, it nails the ole Nashville sound.
@IvorThomas
@IvorThomas 8 ай бұрын
@@NateTheMeh I’m still experimenting. So far I haven’t been able to get the pristine sound all the KZfaqrs get. Thinking about putting a SM57 on the cab and recording that because the room sounds is pretty decent. I’m focusing on that so the same setup can be used for live or home recording. BTW, going into the D20 effects return bypasses the preamp and all the fancy modeling sounds & reverbs. Which is cool… super easy to ad that stuff in Logic
@NateTheMeh
@NateTheMeh 8 ай бұрын
@@IvorThomas it might be the IR you have from the amp! I use a two notes torpedo with my Princeton and got these Ownhammer IR’s for like $20 and it has absolutely been THE sound for recorded guitar, I use a deluxe Reverb ir and get pretty THE Nashville recorded guitar tones from it. Definitely worth trying, since an IR is basically a super complex EQ and attack / decay measurement so that might be what you feel is missing from the Revv! But for what it’s worth the professional guitarists I’ve seen using the Revv has kinda been 50/50 On micing it on a real cab and using IR’s so it should be Able to excel with both! And hell yeah on mixing in logic, I use Space Designer as my IR loader since it just works really well for it. The verbs and delays being stereo and synched to the global tempo def helps when fitting it into the mix

I bought the HX Stomp when I started learning guitar after a ton of research. I have used it as a DAW interface, a switcher, and to "sample" tones to better understand them without having to buy them all separately (or long for the 'unobtianium'). I'll admit that the learning curve was pretty steep but the info I got from this channel has helped immensely and the value is unquestionable. Top it off with regular and meaningful updates and it's by far the best value for a piece of kit. I added a PC+ to it and now I go dual mono with my AC15 and you don't need a switcher thanks to the sophisticated routing options. Add an expression pedal and you've got ALL THE WAHs! Thank you JOHN!

My intention is to use it for the effects only and not do any modelling but it's also nice to have as a backup for the full Helix which I do use for full modeling.

I owned a Stomp XL a couple of years ago and re placed it w/ an FM9 Turbo right when they came out. I loved the Fractal sound, feel, and fiactory presents but the user interface for onboard editing was terrible and I wanted a smaller, more portable device that I could explore creating more of my own sounds with. My new Stomp XL is so much better now after all the updates since my last one, and putting $1100 in my pocket after selling the FM9 and replacing it with the Stomp XL doesn't hurt either. I'm really happy that I gave it another chance - those Line 6 engineers have been working hard to constantly improve their products.

I love the tones that I can get out of the Kemper but find the HX with the editor so much easier to use than Rig manager and after a week I’m starting to get sounds that I enjoy as much as the Kemper. The biggest plus for me is that the HX Stomp works perfectly as a USB interface the Kemper doesn’t. Thanks for your advice and great videos. 🎸🍻

I sold my full sized Helix, and went back to some of my old pedals, and an amp, and then I had something break. I ended up with the HX Stomp because I got a killer deal on a used one through a friend. Now I use the stomp with a small midi controller, and expression pedal. Occasionally I use other pedals with it in the front, or in the loop. I am much more happy with this set up in terms of flexibility, and portability. I agree, the HX Stomp is a no brainer!

As many others, I had a full size but bought a stomp for portability and I’ve come to realize I don’t really need any more dsp than a stomp, even though I have the ability to go crazy with the full size or helix native. The only time I really bring out my full size is if I’m doing a solo acoustic show, and that’s primarily so I can put an eq on my vocal and manage it all with my feet. For normal stuff? I just don’t need all that.

Cheers john for getting me in amongst the stomp again- I always underestimated its power really. I toured with the helix using it with an acoustic guitar that was equipped with an LR Baggs dual source pickup. I could process the under saddle pick up and the internal microphone separately (knock some highs off the piezo and knock some bottom off the mic) and then bring them together for a little comp and reverb and also have room for an electric guitar to play over acoustic guitar loops created on the fly.. When modellers get to the point of the sort of creativity you are getting to with freeZe presets and other ambient things you have done the valve/real amp Vs modeller argument becomes totally irrelevant. With a modeller you can go well beyond what would be practically possible with amp and pedals.. I think. I’ve had my mike hill built pedal board and very early 90s marshall plexis since forever and even through a whole year of touring I have had my frustrations… I don’t think there’s ever a perfect “rig” but your channel is the only one I can really get something out of - maybe it’s because of the gentle humour and great playing but also it’s just such a useful source of inspiration and knowledge. There are a tonne of modellers now.. but I don’t think I would go out of the line 6 helix thing - like a wouldn’t start using a different DAW to Logic.. it does the job brilliantly and there’s still so much more to learn about it it seems hardly worth the time and effort. Thanks again for sharing with us the spoils of your toils - your quest is righteous. 🤠 (shit that was long-sorry)

I use an HX Floor as a bass and guitar rig for a cover gig. Its big but handles both instruments especially when I have to hand the bass to the keys player so I can play guitars and set him up how he plays etc. For a heavy bass gig, I tried the stomp but found stomp control lacking. Certainly a powerful device but the HX Effects I set up for another heavy bass gig and a backup POD Go I use for a different only guitar gig, was the perfect compromise. For the heavy bass gig, having 9 effects with Scribbles and 4 snapshots on the HX effects was hugely productive. I can get close enough with the Pod Go if I had to use it and wanted the Stomp to work for me due to its size, but again, was limiting in terms of control.

Hi John - lovely playing as always! I use an HX Stomp XL on a Nano with a Cioks Sol to power it - fantastic bit of gear and so compact. Have incorporated a Walrus Audio stereo Canvas for the DI/line isolator. You very right - the latest few firmware updates have improved the Amp variety and Cabs so much, it's hard to justify the extra price to go for the top tier units - however, they look and sound amazing. It's great to turn up at the gig and know you're going to get a great sound and performance consistently with the HX. I am dreading the day someone spills a beer on it though...............................🙂

Honestly, I think this will go down as one of the greatest pedals of all time. It offers most of what the flagship unit can do along with the same sound quality in in a fraction of the footprint. Then to add to it, the pricing was incredible. (I personally think they should try to drop it a little bit to get more people into their market but, even where it currently stands I’d say it’s definitely worth it new and a no-brainer if you can get it cheaper on the use market). The biggest strength in my opinion, though is all the routing and cabling options. When I feel like I can’t get a specific sound, I just try to utilize it in a different way. Sometimes I’m using models through a 1x12 with a power amp and other times just for the drives or through an effects loop and lately, in the 4CM through my tube-amp. In the 4CM I also like using it to preamp swap and get my tube amp plus another amp when I switch (you can even do more amp sims if you utilize external foot switches).

Pair the HX Stomp with one or even two (stereo) Fender FRFR 1x12 or 1x10 amp/cabs and you got a killer setup for almost the same cost as one FM9, Quad Cortex or Tone Master Pro. John is spot on with this post. The dividends beyond the price cost of the HX Stomp drops like a brick. The only negative for me on the HX Stomp is the drive blocks do not not really compare to the real thing. You can of course fix that if you feel the same with an external drive pedal etc.

The "accuracy of models" in amp modelers was important to me once, as were the models and number of models in the modeler. So, between the amp models, cab models, speaker models, mic models, mic placement, then 3rd party IRs...that's a lot models to sift through, combine and compare. That takes a lot of time, and a lot of comparisons. This process now seems amusing, arcane and time consuming. I found gear that lets me "sculpt" my tone from a basic starting point (e.g., acoustic, clean, crunch, high gain). Now I get tones for each type that I like and sound good to me, and don't care if it's an accurate digital representation of a real tube amp, cab and speaker. For me, sculpting tones is better, faster and more accurate way to get tones I want. I have it in software plugins, and I also found it in a hardware floor processor that is usually ignored by many. 😎

I loved it and played it a lot and just last week I sold it and decided to upgrade to the FM3. I can say that they Fractal stuff does sound significantly better out of the box but the HX usability and quality is unbeatable for the price. That being said, if I don’t really gig much and most of my work is studio based and if I could start over I would just buy Helix Native instead of the HX Stomp because it sounds identical but in order to do that your do need a decent computer to run it.

My only complaint is the user interface.. The device does a great job and Line6 keeps the updates coming.. I'll stick with it a bit longer.

The best all around modeler for that price is the GT-1000 Core , HX only edges it on UI.

got the Ampero 2 for like $275 on amazon black friday deal. just can't justify the $650 for the HX stomp when they do pretty much the same thing.

Hi John, has Helix fixed their 1 button looper option? I mean I need one stomp to stop my loop, not 2 fast stomps. It is cumbersome on stage. Tks!

John why do you use the hx stomp more than the fm3? Do you find the fm3 to bulky and heavy when you also have to deal with the pa?

Great playing John! Question, I’ve heard you can’t get the HX Stomp to “feedback”. If you’re using it with an amp, will it feedback then?

With the latest update you can get a “faux feedback” that’s usable.

I bought an HX Stomp bc of you, then upgraded to a computer with Helix Native (for unlimited DSP) and a Nektar Pacer midi controller. I recently bought an HS Stomp XL on black friday for small gigs. Really like the Helix line, both the sounds and the value. Also the number of amp models and overdrive and distortion pedals in it!

As someone who has owned both L6 gear and Fractal including the FM3 I would take the FM3 in a second. Fractal's support is the best, constant software upgrades and a great community plus better models and effects. If your wallet can do it, I would go FM3. Look around for a used one or check the Fractal page to see if there is a sale going on.

HX stomp or Boss GT 1000 Core?
@johnnathancordy

In terms of Power/Hardware - I think the GT1000 core actually would be a winner if Boss supported it with updates. I think I should do some future vids comparing amp models of the Boss gear with some of the other key players as I feel like Boss is a bit underrated/underrepresented in the Modeling Wars?

@@johnnathancordyI was about to ask the same question but with the GX-100 instead. Considering both Boss units around the same price point offer dual path/dual amp rigs it would be nice to see how the sounds compare at that price point. The gx100 is also more functional out of the box with the extra switches and expression pedal.

Wait, how old are you? 😂 I assumed 35 max, but if you were old enough to be gigging in the 90’s, you’d have to be like 40-45

What I think is amazing is that I bought my HXStomp like 4 -5 years ago, and Line 6 has opted to continue not only upgrade the software and hardware firmware on a regular basis, often implementing additions that added significant improvements in sound and features and functionality. These changes have not only kept my little 600 dollar stomp box relevant, but have actually improved some basic facets (like squeezing out more processing power and blocks from code refactors). And they haven't charged a dime. There seemed to be no actual planned obsolesce for this thing, I am just amazed. And that's not even discussing the insane I/O you get out of this tiny box. crazytown. 600 bucks.
