I loved your comment about the camera taking you back to when you first fell in love with photography, that was my experience too. I switched to Olympus from Canon FF around 4 years ago and it completely reinvigorated my photography. This is not to denigrate any other brand, ultimately it's finding the one that works best for you (and I genuinely believe in this day and age there's no such thing as a bad camera), but the Olympus/OM-System just suited me to a tee. Love the vlog too.

I have to admit the one camera I really love using is my Olympus OM-1 35mm slr. Yep, tis a 1970's film camera and it's a joy to use. I wanted one when I was a kid in the 70's and swore I would own one some day. That day came a few years back and I am not disappointed, it was truly worth the wait. I don't use the built in light meter as I haven't had a battery in it for ages and it's fine, it's a fully mechanical camera. I have an old Gossen Trisix selenium cell light meter that is still accurate half a century after being made and it is definietly a great experience. There's a lot to be said for having a "Batteries Not Included" day out. Just me, my OM-1 and a couple of Zuiko lenses. Bliss!

What a treat! Not only got another great video from you, but also got a happy trip down memory lane. Back in November 2019 we were staying in Avirmore for a few days, and one morning woke up to thick fog and I knew Craigellachie was where we needed to go. I took one of my favourite photos from Scotland around the spot you were by at 21:50. We then went to the top of the crag and were treated to a cloud inversion. For a couple of people from the sub-tropical Gold Coast the entire day was such a treat! Thanks for a great video Henry, and I second your plug for Aviemore and it's pubs, and the Cairngorms in general. We also stayed in Braemar and that was also wonderful, though much smaller.

Morning Henry! That was a really great video, thanks for taking us on a good tour of that nature reserve, and sharing some really superb images! For me personally, the primary enjoyment is being at a beautiful (and peaceful) location, and the photographs that I try and capture are more to retain a good memory of where I've been and then to share with others. As you say, the camera is just a tool, knowing what elements of a scene to capture is the real challenge.

Hi Henry! Another great video. It's a lovely area there, I know it well. Great to see your transition to mft. I've always enjoyed your videos, irrespective of what camera you were using (the choice of camera is far from the most important element of photography!) but as a mft user for many years I can relate even more to your videos now. (Lumix user myself). Use the same Peak Design clip on my rucksack when walking or cycling, shoot handheld the majority of the time and general just enjoy being out and about in the countryside with my camera with me. And yes, it's great fun! 😊

Yesterday I picked up my OM-5 model from 2015. It’s been sitting in my den all these years. I went bananas over how much fun it is. Definitely get that buzz you talk about from my Fuji XPro 1. It's an 11 year old camera that I'll take anywhere, any weather, generally chuck about, and get great pictures from. What's more, after years of abuse, there's nothing that's happened to affect the quality of the pictures. Your point about just treating it as a tool is definitely part of the magic.

What a lovely little early morning walk you've taken us on, thank you Henry. I have a Canon camera entry level and I absolutely love it! I only bought it 18 months ago but have taken thousands of photos, as I am fortunate enough to get out 2-3 times a week. I think of a location and go with the flow. Don't really have any expectations but rather a few ideas of what I might be looking for on the day. I subsequently have a ball, as I wander about and come home with some photos that pleasantly surprise me. You could say I'm hooked, it's so much fun!

Congrats on new camera and thank you for the wonderfull adventure. The first 2 photos i do like the first one a wee bit more, focal distance brings out more detail, however the lighting on the right side and reflection of second image seemed to give a scale of the scene. To answer Your question at 28 min, i have used my phone (Nigel gave me idea) usually on more intimate scenes, it seems to help “focus” on scene/subj.

As a person with mobility and health issues and it is the best move I have made. I still get awards in international exhibitions and sell prints. I am trying to recognize anything in Aviemore from Google Maps that I can identify but no luck. I stayed there in 1977 at a small lodge/pub on the main road owned by a distant relative, Jimmy Ross. Back then the ski facility was very new I believe. Of course being from Canada there had to be a curling team from Canada on the ice that day, but mostly in the bar. I was driving through the highlands staying with several aunts and uncles. Sadly my last time in Scotland and seeing any of them.

Around Loch Garten and Loch Eilein not far from the town is pretty good too. Regarding the enjoyment of photography....absolutely! it doesn't matter what tool i am using for the job, i just live and breath it, it gets the excitement and creative juices flowing whether out in the wilderness or overcoming challenges in the studio. Really nice images Henry. I remember going back to a Fuji bridge camera from a DSLR around 2010. The reason for doing so was that I'd just got a new dog and couldn't handle all the heavy gear as well. I found myself automatically 'helping' the bridge camera do what a DSLR would have wanted and as a result stopped worrying about whether or not it could take the shot. Meanwhile the dog got taken to new places and so did the much lighter weight camera. I didn't give up on DSLRs as their image quality always had a higher potential, and with a certain lens the filters could be shared. New cameras get you out and about more and that's probably the best reason to get one.

Great video Henry, I what I found as I get older is I like to travel light. I do own a dslr with several lens and tripod but recently I discovered the Panasonic Lumix fz300 Bridge camera. The camera is super light, 25-600mm, shoots raw, 4k video and 4k photo burst up 30fps, the down side is it is only 12mg file size.

Only had the 12-45mm F4 PRO lens with me though, but it was perfect for a lightweight kit. I am now retired but one of my prior consultancy places was with MacDonald Hotels, and I was supposed to visit Avemore through them, but my trip got cancelled. It is good to hear you talking about the composition and light long before you even touch the camera. I have often walked past a scene that I thought would be good, gone on further and then came back, only to find the light gone. Technically IBIS is very good. I have had the E-M5ii for many years with its "4.5 stops", which is good but its effectiveness reduces with the length of the lens. The performance of a super-zoom is compromised by that which makes it a super-zoom, its extreme zoom range. They try hard but cannot be good at all focal lengths. The 12-200 is a 16x super-zoom. The 12-200 is often compared to the Panasonic 14-140 10x travel lens (which does punch way above its weight) but a more reasonable comparison is the often forgotten Panasonic 45-200ii f/4-5.6 4x zoom. The mark 1 dates from 2008, one of the first MFT lenses and not much loved due to the primitive Mega-OIS. The mark 2 with Power-OIS sorted it out but you will find both rather cheaply on the used market. The E-M5ii handles the mark 1 rather better than a Lumix back does. With the mark 2, no change on an Olympus back but a different animal on a Lumix. For long shots, Olympus do have a soft-shutter function.

New camera at last (postage isn’t what it used to be). Your reflection photos seem to take on a kind of Claud Monet feel ~ absolutely stunning.

The photos of the silver birch along the shore are gorgeous. Great and uplifting enthusiasm. One comment, and a matter of personal opinion I guess, I enjoyed the content more when it was slightly more compact, in the 15-20 min range.

Glad to see your first experience with the OM-5 was good. I love my E-M1 Mark III. The lighter gear has been very freeing.

Beautiful images, nice to see a beautiful woodland again! Love seeing the beginning of the fall colors. I was in Germany the last week, and fall was really starting off there already. The camera seems like a great one, did you sell the Z7? I'm sorry, you probably told us in the 3 hour video and I will definitely watch it (I'm about an hour in already), but I just haven't had the time to finish watching it.

Hi Henry & hello from Oz, sadly I'm feeling the opposite to what you describe Henry, I'm tired of carrying around my Canon & it's heavy lenses etc etc etc. I'm very close to & looking forward to making the change to the Om system or the new Lumix G9 mk II, then hopefully my enthusiasm will be restored. Watching videos from you & William Patino have certainly inspired me to improve my photography. Cheers & Thankyou.

I started out photography with a Nikon D7200, which is funny, because I remember, you had the same camera when I started following the channel. But I could just never really get to love using that camera. It was a brilliant piece of gear, but not intuitive at all for me. Then a couple years later I got myself a Fujifilm X-H1.. and it just got glued to my hand. It taught me to adore the process of taking an image. There's something about these retrostyled cameras that's different. Great video!

Great shots 👍 your new camera looks mint 🔥. Did you say this video was a couple weeks ago? Think there was snow forecast up on the tops in Scotland this weekend, bet you can't wait for that 👍

Interesting to hear your thoughts regarding the new camera: I tend to agree that the OM products are a delight to use. They always seem to have capabilities that are easy to access, which points to a depth of thought behind the system. I never really felt comfortable with my Fujifilm, and though I still have my RX-10, digging into its menus is excruciating. Yet all have been designed to be _used_. So in all likelihood, it's probably just the way my mind works that sees me comfortable with OMS. The same goes for processing software - I'm enjoying LrC, but it doesn't mean other applications are inadequate in any way. One thing I found just a few days ago, the OM high-res mode can be used to smooth water as if you were using an ND filter, and you gain a bit more dynamic range (according to the experts). I had a really good fiddle with that, and I think I got some promising results. I needed to apply a bit more thought to what I was doing, but it was just an experiment.

Been an OM-1 owner since it came out. Nikon is still my primary kit but really look forward to seeing how you get on with the OM-5. Cheers!

I too swapped my Nikon gear for an Olympus, an E-M1 and 14-150 lens. I agree wholeheartedly with you, photography is much more fun these days, because the camera lets me take the shots I want, with an absolute minimum of fuss and bother. As a fellow sucker for running water, one of my favourite places is the Linn of Dee, outside Braemar. It's easy to get to, and equally easy to lose an hour just watching and listening to the water 🙂

Henry, I know people are going to think I'm silly for feeling this way, but I have a special place in my heart for my Nikon D5100. I know there are cameras with a lot more mega pixels, that focus faster, and take better low light pictures; but I love my old D5100. I keep looking at D5300s and D7100s but I just like my old camera. I've even considered replacing my D5100 with a D610. But every time I go to pull the trigger I change my mind. I wind up buying a lens, or some other piece of equipment that goes with my Nikon. This morning I called KEH and ordered a Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED IF Autofocus APS-C Lens to replace a Sigma lens that is about to die. I thought about getting a 50mm prime lens, but why bother when I'm happy with my crop sensor body. I guess when my old girl finally gives up and stops doing the job I'll look into getting something that has a few more bells and whistles. But in the mean time my D5100 and I are going to keep taking photos.

Great video, love the images. Also glad you love the Olympus, I was close to pulling the trigger on one, in the end I chose to stick with my Fujifilm system. I have to say my experience with that system is that it is always fun. I have the X-T2 which is a few years old now, but still takes great images and is fun to use. I also have the smaller X-E4 which is such a good all rounder, great for carrying around in the streets or in the countryside.
Photographers really shouldn’t do this…
