I've been invited to the launch of Audi's new big sporty SUV - the SQ7. Powered by a clever 4L V8 Diesel with a host of systems designed to improve efficiency and response, this should be a fantastic car... but there's something going on. Let's discuss.

The issue is that the engine noise through the speakers doesn't match the acceleration of the car hence you feel there's something wrong but can't quite put your finger on it.

I hate these things and massive SUV's in general. They are a menace in inner-city Melbourne, driven by white-knuckled, terrified people with minimal car control and abysmal spatial awareness. They're getting bigger too, it's like an arms race of who can have the tallest, widest boat - which they absolutely need so they can see over each other. But if you're in a normal hatchback or sedan, you have no visibility at all. They're heavy, expensive and inefficient. What was wrong with a good estate or sedan for families?

If you guys have more than 3 children, 2 of whom are still in isofix seats then you wouldnt take such a dim view of the Q7. Not a likeable car, I agree, but the most comfortable/practical family car it most definately is. Ive actually got rid of my RS6 because of this. Just not big enough to fit them all in. Seeing a few comments that everyone is a twat who buys one. Im a proper petrol head but family needs come first. People who make sweeping generalisations are mostly twats themselves.

I drive a 2.0TDI 2019 Audi A6 and I can get nearly 800 miles to 55 litres of fuel (think that is around 1200km??) no petrol or hybrid car can deliver that with the 7.6 seconds to 60MPH, and the amount of torque the engine produces, for that efficiency, and no electric car can offer any of this for the price I paid for mine, so diesel is here to stay for at least another 15 years.

I drive a standard Q7 and in 35k miles it has not once felt too large for the road. You cannot just jump in a car and expect to feel at one with it, that takes a little time so the size comments are ridiculous, there are much wider cars on sale. As for it not feeling fast, like most Audi’s it will be faster than the published numbers but the lag is big concern and might stop me from buying one so a useful if somewhat biased review.

I bought an SQ7 after watching this video. I wasn't able to drive it first because of the Covid situation. I think it's a very handy car - I've covered 6000 miles in the 5 weeks I've had it driving between the midlands and Scottish highlands. I don't really feel this delay/lag issue, not in mine anyway, ir maybe it's just me. Now it's had an oil change I've thoroughly tested it on some suitable highland roads. It's very impressive. The only thing I do detect is there is boost from the supercharger, and then extra boost when the turbos kick in. So, in that sense there is a sort of lag.

It's not the gearbox as it has been proven on other WLTP approved VAG diesels that don't have this ZF 8HP which still are slow to react from a standstill. These new WTLP approved diesels appear to have a certain and incredibly ridiculous software limit on engine power and throttle response to pass aforementioned WTLP requirements. Most customers report a 2 second "dead zone" while accelerating from a standstill and this is not even limited to diesels in the European region. American owners report a "dead zone" of 2,3 or even 4 seconds in their petrol powered Q8s accelerating after they crawl to a stop or slow down to 1-10 km/h during which the engine shuts down and activates it's start/stop mode.

Could it be the adaptive drivetrain that vehicles have had for quite some time now? So when you first get in and start driving, it’s learning how heavy-footed the driver is that trip, traffic conditions, steering inputs, braking inputs, and therefore since you’re also in Surrey, and the vehicle knows that too BTW....... It's keeping you, and potentially others in that area safer. Because how awful would it be for VAG if there was an accident in Surrey involving Audi's brand-new SQ7, at their launch event, plastered all across the various media sites? Just a thought.

Nice review, re diesel it's not so much I wouldn't buy another on the basis of not liking them I like diesels for a certain job, what worries me is that government(s) will continue to penalise even new ones with latest tech and slowly start putting the price of diesel fuel up.

I ended up skipping through a bit of this video - did they end up pin pointing what exactly was "very wrong" with the vehicle. A good friend of mine has one, and it definitely pulls all the performance numbers that Audi claims (absolutely hoses his old X5 50M). If seat of the pants feel feel, the fact a large comfortable, practical SUV doesnt "feel" as fast as it is actually going, then perhaps you should buy a 1990's Honda Integra that feels like its going twice as fast as it actually is?

I have actually covered quite a few miles in the new SQ8, and I strongly agree with your criticism of the car. the acceleration is honestly terrible - a 2013 SQ5 TDI with 313 hp feels substantially faster. it is as if the car deliberately accelerates as 'gently' and lazily as possible. however it is a great autobahn cruiser. turn on lane assist and cruise control in the comfort setting and it literally drives like a cruise ship. getting it up to speed is extremely effortless and the car is very luxurious. it just has nothing even remotely sporty about it...

@@chrisdabom well it's the way the acceleration feels, the gearbox makes it pretty much impossible for you to give the car more than 3000 rpm (even in dynamic mode!), and when you actually try to floor it, nothing happens until you look down and see youre about to lose your license.

People buy SUVs for only 3 reasons: 1 - Serious off-roading 2 - Their hips have given up and they can't get into a lower car. 3 - They're a wanker 1 is a valid reason to buy a Land Cruiser (/Defender/Jimny/etc). 2 is a valid reason to buy a Kadgar (because that's a better badge than "cashcow") and 3 is a valid reason to punch them in the face. SQ7 drivers will all be number 3.

The gearbox issue is not specific to this car, its with all the Audi autos whether its 7-speed Stronic or 8 Speed ZF. The software for the transmission is not as sophisticated as you get from other germans. BMW was way ahead in adapting ZF box they really nailed the software for it. Not sure why Audi can't nail down the seamless change you can get with the transmission. I have an A5 and hate the transmission especially with the lovely 3-litre v6 buttery smooth engine. it's a shame.

@@julianevans9548 Take two equivalent 2-ton 4x4's, one petrol and one diesel. The petrol 4x4 will be lucky to achieve 20mpg. The diesel 4x4 will be able to achieve 40mpg. With NOX traps and AdBlue injection (required for euro 6), the emissions are comparable with those of a petrol car. See this comment from a leading online magazine: "The VW scandal which broke in 2015 did great damage to diesel car sales - effectively killing off diesel’s reputation within a matter of months, but this was some years ago. Euro 6 emission compliance has changed everything. Diesel has come fighting back in recent years - the latest Euro 6-compliant models are the cleanest diesels we’ve ever had. In fact, while they’ll never be as clean as electric or hybrid, on many levels they’re cleaner and less polluting than most petrol-fuelled vehicles.”

Hey Jay, love the vid! Glad we can count on you for telling it how it really is. Small note, not completely sure if true: In the University of Nijmegen I've picked up that, in combustion engines, it's basically a trade-off between Mileage and Emissions. Meaning, higher mileage (lower consumption) in a given engine will mean an increase in greenhouse emissions. I've also picked up, from a worker at a large oil-company, that we still have enough fossil fuels for hundreds of years to come. Not sure of those two statements are true, but I do think they are. So, concluding: the SQ7 consumes alot of fuel, to keep emissions down, the latter seeming to be a real problem.
