Explosions can be used to snuff an otherwise uncontrollable fire because the burst expels most of the atmosphere outward creating a very brief vacuum, instantly depriving the fire of its required Oxygen.

It's fascinating how young reactors enter blistering films like this one, or say, Full Metal Jacket or Taxi Driver, responding initially as if they are friendly conventional movies--taking potentially sentimental, endearing moments at face value until the filmmaker methodically strips away all insurances and safety nets. It's like watching somebody wander out of the tourist district into the hood.

You're so damn right Dasha! "I'm finished." is such a multifaceted final line! Is he telling his housekeeper he's physically finished killing Eli? Or finished in that he's going to go to jail for murder, or finished in the eyes of God? Is he breaking the fourth wall and telling the audience he was finished with his performance? Or maybe he was just finished with his meal 😂

fun fact! The oil well explosion scene sent smoke into the air, which shut down production for another movie that was also shooting in a nearby area for a couple days. That other movie was No Country for Old Men 😂 Two of the greatest movies ever, forever linked in more ways than one ill tell ya

H.W. lit the cabin on fire because he read “Henry’s” diary and figured out that he was not who he said he was.

This was filmed around Marfa Texas. The same place they filmed NO Country for Old Men. In fact both movies were being filmed at the same times just a few miles apart. At one time NO Country for old men had to shut down production temporarily as the smoke from the fire scenes in There will be blood drifted over into the sets of NO Country for old men.

One of my all time favorites. Acting, camera, soundtrack... love everything and i still get goosebumps!

This is my favorite film, despite its dark tone. It's so wonderfully constructed, stunningly beautiful to look at, menacing and intense, and has the best character study and performance of all time (in my opinion) by Daniel Day-Lewis. The opening scenes without dialogue give a fantastic insight into the nature of the man whose story is to follow. It's an incredible achievement by everyone involved. I always enjoy your commentary, Dasha, and glad you got to watch these phenomenal performances. 🙂

My husband is a beekeeper and is making sure to teach our daughter everything he knows. We are Canadian and will be home schooling her. She will be able to do whatever she wants with her life when she's an adult, but my husband wants to make sure she'll always have this life skill she can fall back on if needed. He has a Bachelor's degree in entomology, so she'll be getting free university level education. We worked on the renovation of the bowling alley in the final scene. Daniel Plainviews mansion is located in Beverly Hills California. The mansion belonged to the Doheny family and was donated to the city of Beverly Hills. The movie is based on the first pipelines created to transport oil to ports of Long Beach and San Pedro California. Old oil rigs and newer oil rigs can still be seen in Signal Hill which is next to Long Beach. Masterpiece if a movie, Daniel Day Lewis gave a historical performance and Paul Dano was amazing as well.

God damn, a dark but sensational piece of cinema! My friends and family have never understood why I love it, but the rawness, the bitterness, and the abject truth of sweating and bleeding for your desire and fighting to defend the claim you then have over a found fortune, strike a chord with me. It's hardly unexpected given the film's bleak, smoldering presentation being outside her typical wheelhouse, but Dasha misses some key details and cues from the characters that would likely have made it more emotionally resonant for her. It was, however, another time back at the turn of the nineteenth century, and the film is reminiscent of Malick's ponderous film style that lends itself more heavily to reflection over reaction.

Hi Dasha!😊 The star here, Daniel Day Lewis is known for being a very powerful actor. One of his other big films is "The Gangs of New York" (2002) with Leonardo DiCaprio. I think it's simple to understand that Daniel trusts no one and holds a murderous grudge against anyone that he feels has betrayed him. His dabbling with trusting "family", apparently in a homage to his childhood, ended badly in both cases as he was betrayed by both pseudo family members. Both of whom ironically were given their family status by Daniel's acceptance of them. It's unclear how much blame Daniel shoulders inside his head for letting them get something from him. I imagine he won't accept any blame and holds them completely responsible, as he holds all people fully responsible that he feels have wronged him. What a great film.

My great grandfather was similar in many ways to the Daniel Plainview character in this movie. He was a self-made man from this era who found his fortune in the American west. Only, he was a silver and copper mine tycoon rather than oil. He had a land dispute with another man who blew up a dam on my great grandfather's property which resulted in a flood that drowned his young daughter and a friend of hers. Next time he saw that man he gunned him down in the street in broad daylight. Went to trial for murder but was acquitted since the other man had publicly made death threats and was considered to be a trouble-maker. I guess the way they viewed it back then was that if you made threats to kill a man, you better arm yourself. A simpler time. I always wished I could have met him.

12:00 this is what is called a blowout. Which is the uncontrolled flow/ eruption of natural gas trapped in the rock / in the same space as the oil. It shoots up the gas and oil out of the annular space (which is the negative space left by the drill bit.) Nowadays they try to mitigate this by pumping pressurized “mud” which is basically like wet oilly cement slurry type stuff that is very sticky to itself, high surface tension. So usually the gas cannot escape the rock and stays trapped in it. Blowouts are extremely dangerous because it quickly sprays oil and gas all over. Usually before this happens when gas is found in the annular space bubbling thru the mud, it gets directed into a burn off valve where it is ejected into the air and burned off in order to prevent the pressure in the mud tanks and the drill hole from building up too high. The moment the drill hole becomes unbalanced and the gas becomes higher pressure than the mud, the gas will shoot out and push all the mud on top of it out of the hole along with lots of oil that was set to flow up to the line. Those gas overflow burn off lines can ignite the huge cloud of natural gas and the aerosolized oil flying around the air and covering every surface. Because of the fine particulate of the oil suspended in the air and the natural gas diffusing into the surround atmosphere, it becomes like an air bomb. It creates an extremely powerful explosion and shockwave. The fire can stick around floating in the air for a few seconds even. There was a significant blow out in Oklahoma a few years ago. You can find a CSB video on it here on KZfaq that explains it very well. Something very similar happened in the BP deep water horizon disaster.

The use of dynamite to "blow out" the fire at the rig is the SAME thing as blowing out a candle on a cake. The dynamite goes off, creating such a huge difference in air pressure that it basically sucks away ALL the air at the rig (putting the fire out) AND ALSO having such a large rush of air come in that it blows out any possible risks of a second fire starting. The problem with this method is the HUGE risk to life by using so much dynamite at one time, as well as the math involved in figuring out exactly how much dynamite is "enough" without "too much/not enough" to actually stop the fire.

Forget No Country for Old Men.....THIS should of won Best Picture!!!!

One of my favorite behind the scenes trivia facts is that this movie and No Country For Old Men were being filmed at the same time and roughly the same place, only about a mile apart. During the scene at 12:50 where the oil derrick is on fire, the smoke traveled far enough that it was visible in the sky and they had stop filming No Country for the day.

Daniel Day Lewis is an amazing actor. "My Left Foot' was the first movie i saw him in. He's wonderful in "Last of the Mohicans" a beautiful movie.

This was a true powerhouse performance between the two actors, Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano. The ending line, however, has a special meaning to me. Daniel Plainview(tied with Bill Cutting as the best Daniel Day Lewis performance) while an absolute beast, a greedy misanthrope who drove away his adopted son, accepts his failings and knows what he is in the finale. He decides that "he's finished"pretending to be a good man or moral, or anything other than what he is. Daniel has confirmed that he hates people, that he finds nothing good in them. He opens up to a man who he believes is his half brother, only to find he died before he could meet him and this man is just using him(you see his anger growing slowly after his "take them to the peach tree dance"quote is ignored or doesn't get the right reaction and how "Henry"is drunk and seems to be taking advantage of his money. His later breaking with H.W seems to be out of anger and pain and we see his flashbacks of him having fun with his adoptive son, though his words were cruel as he mocks H.W as a "bastard in a basket". When Eli comes begging, Daniel takes great pleasure in taking away his hope and then beats him to death. Eli, on the other hand, is worse than Daniel, in a few ways. For one, he seeks the spotlight, wanting attention, to seem holy and special over his twin brother(he furiously beats his father because of Paul helping Daniel and becomes upset when Daniel tells him that Paul was the smart one and tells him of Pauls own success as an oil man). The blessing of the well was just to show off himself. His later baptism of Daniel is partially getting revenge for Daniel beating him when he came demanding money after H.W was left deaf. And his coming to Daniel in the ending seemed to be trying to set things aside, but he tried to use EVERYTHING to convince Daniel, saying they were old friends, that his sister had married Daniels son, etc; He even renounces his faith out of need for the money, only to have Daniel reveal it was already taken. Afterwards, he states that he's a sinner, that he needs the money and even blames God for "failing to warn me about the economy". Eli is only a pure man on the outside, but inside, he may be even uglier than Daniel. "I'm finished!"means that Daniel is done pretending to be moral. That he has accepted who he's become.

Great reaction to a film with difficult themes to pick up on. Business and religion wrestling for the soul of America, and Daniel Day Lewis giving it everything. The film that made me want to write about films.

Asking "Where is your wife" back then, would be viewed as someone calling the child a "bastard" while directly implying that the father was "unethical" due to impregnating a woman and NOT marrying her. But when he "flipped the insult" by saying "she died in childbirth", what he was implying is that "I take care of my family and people I love, no matter WHAT hardship I have to endure to do it." Basically, SHE tried to insult him, and at the end of the conversation he insulted HER and made himself appear to be the far more "Moral upright person" in the process.

This is one of my favorite movies. It seems so real.

There will be Blood is a double meaning, because obviously there was literally blood from the murders, but also it encompasses Daniel's desire to have a true blood relative and that's the one thing he can't have. His "brother" was a fake, and his "son" wasn't really his.

Plainview is an amazing character. But Eli is more interesting to me. My sense is that he truly believed himself to be a prophet very early on, but that any genuine faith he had was pretty quickly overcome by greed ... both for money and for adoration. And at the end I think his "confession," which Plainview supposedly forced out of him, was actually much more honest than even Eli himself could perceive. At that point Eli probably did see that he was in a sense a false prophet, and maybe even that God was a superstition -- just as Daniel's confession in church was in a way a show he put on for gain, but became a real confession of guilt and remorse as he did it.

This is in my top 5 films. Incredible performances and beautiful cinematography and music. It’s a true American epic.

At 13:40 during oil fires it will burn and burn and water can't put it out without huge amounts of it and well that oil well is pretty far from a large source of water. So to stop oil fire's you starve it by eliminating the fuel and the oxygen. you do this by putting dynamite next to the fire and set it off hoping the resulting explosion blasts away the fuel (oil) and oxygen in the immediate vicinity and this usually puts it out.

Excellent reaction to a great movie. Most people don't understand the subtle and unpleasant truths in this script. You saw much of it. Yes, he loved his son. He said all those things at the end because he felt his son betrayed him, which I agree he did. He turned on him in a flash just like he did his false brother because he felt his son did as his false brother did - revealed his true nature. Thus, the flash anger. And yes, he was a very lonely man who just wanted loyalty. He "hated people" because he understood that most people are selfish and disloyal, just like his brother and later his son turned out to be. A sad tragic character witha rise and fall arch and dark implications, all excellently written. The most evil character by far in this movie is daniel the preacher. What a righteous end for him. A true sociopath through and through with zero remorse or guilt for all his evyl acts (and we saw only 1% of them, rest assured).

Interesting that you bring up "The Godfather." I've never seen much similarity between the movies, but you've made me reconsider. Both movies are about the birth of the modern United States of America. Two very different Americas, one being urban and one being the untamed west. Industrialization came swiftly, in the form of mechanized guns (as in "The Godfather") or mechanized transit, which drove the need for oil. In both cases, that mechanization forged a path toward a new future. Both films illustrate conflicts between "the old ways" and the new, between science (economics/business) and religion, and the lengths we will go to hold on to our families over time, even in the face of betrayal.

The landscapes are likely up in San Luis Obispo County, along the Central Coast of California. They even show San Luis on the map during one of the scenes where Daniel's asking what land is left to buy up.

What a nice surprise...my favorite reactor watching my favorite film. A film that needs to be watched at least twice to really understand it.

Sorry so late, but excellent reaction , Dasha! A movie about profits and prophets. A movie showcasing people's true motivations. Daniel Day Lewis (Daniel) is one of the finest actors of my generation.

If you want to see another fantastic movie starring Daniel Day Lewis, I recommend In the Name of the Father, which is based on the true story of four young Irish people who were falsely accused and convicted of a terrorist bombing and their struggle to survive in prison and win their freedom.

In real life, the kid would've acquired lifelong tinnitus from that oil well eruption and he would've heard a high pitched whistle for every second of the rest of his awakened life as well as not being to hear anything else.

This movie is about the wages of greed and capitalism. We actually follow the villain throughout the movie. You should not be rooting for him. There are no heroes in this film. Eli sells God and Daniel sells oil. They're both only in it for profit and greed, as such life and love have no place. Only money.

Danial didn't abandon HW. Remember, Danial was speaking to his assistant about finding HW help in San Francisco or LA. He had to trick HW to get on the train likely because HW wouldn't go willingly.

That's a good point, his back could have been broken when he fell in that hole and that's the end of the story right there. He would've died a very tortuous slow death.

I know that this is not the appropriate place to talk about this topic, but see how strong and responsible children were at that time, because there was no such thing as adolescence. Why are there people complaining about the age of Aisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, who lived in the seventh century? Imagine that just two centuries ago, people were getting married in A young age because people grew old quickly and died quickly, let alone 1400 years ago. I love historical films that embody history.

This is such a great movie glad you reacted to it.

Why does he have a gun? Mining in the old west especially alone had risk of robbery. Thieves might lay and wait for you to emerge from your hole, shoot you and take the gold, silver, etc. you worked so hard to unearth.

I am always sad for daniel. He was in such a rush to strike it rich and make a lot of money through oil. But as we can see he could never find happiness in it. As it was family he really craved. The only person he actually cared about was his son. And he intentionally pushed him away during the end of the movie so he would not be burdened with Daniels unhappiness. Daniel was able to end things atleast by defeating eli, the one man who was similar to him and used the same type of emotional manipulation to get what he wanted even though he was clearly a lot more of a con man than Daniel was.

I love how open ended and ambiguous the morality and motivations in this film are. One way to look at it is to see Daniel as Sociopath who thinks he needs a pseudo family member with him to project a sense of normalcy. Especially back then a family man was seen as a more reliable person to do business with. With his ‘brother’ gone he needs his ‘son’ back.

Mining for gold and oil reserves was always a terrible and thankless job. There will be blood is amazing movie. So many quotes I still quote
