I thought it was obvious that Thorfinn was supposed to come off as one dimensional? Isn't that the sad part? That clearly every character in this show is so in depth but Thorfinn, a teenage boy has spent the last 11 years of his life thinking only about murdering someone, so much so we see almost nothing else in him.

I know that diferent people have diferent reactions and understanding of somethings, but for me this show is about the explanation/epiphany of beliefs, faith and the sole understanding of protagonism... we can see it from canute's point of view generated from the interaction with the priest, where true love is about giving it without discrimination for all forms of life, therefore death and becaming part of the nature cycle is the true form of god's love, so in life we should tried to stop seeking for such catalyst of change and become one. In Askeladd's view he realized that the time for Artorious, the king's savior of his mother to appear was in that only moment when she was about to get killed and when he doesn't, Askellad himself acted in his behalf, kinda turning him into the representing image of Artorious.. So when he stop seeking for someone to save them he choose to be the protagonist and saved her. And that's what he sees in Canute's, the pure heart and possible "hero" feactures that could save the world, like he once saw in Thor's... "the true meaning of beeing a warrior" is maybe that? I don't know if that make's any sense for you but this is what i learned from this series..

I don't think it's fair to blame Thorfinn for the way he is. He's still a kid. Askelad manipulated him for most of his life, constantly baiting him and gaslighting him. It's easy for him to talk as if he knows what's up, but Thorfinn never got the chance to. But sure, hurray for Askeladd, the mature and intelligent asshole who turned Thorfinn into the mad dog he is now.
@tellyg47

Thorfinn has known one thing his whole life and in this episode Askeladd tells him how pathetic he is. Remember everyone is a slave to something and Thorfinn is enslaved by his emotions; his anger and need for revenge. But those feelings have stagnated him. Saying he feels 'one-dimensional' is not wrong in that Thorfinn hasn't really grown as a character... yet. Mind you all of this season is basically the prologue in the manga

I enjoyed the reaction. Some things worth considering. Thorfinn and Askeladd do have some similarities, but its also interesting to see how the differences they have influenced and shaped them as well. Both experienced a life changing/altering moment. For Thorfinn it was the death of his father. For Askeladd, it was almost death of his mother. Thorfinn prior actually had a pretty happy and regular life though, for someone his age in his community. He was also younger. Askeladd was older and brought up as slave, a minority/marginalised. Oh also I want to make one thing clear, I don't think generally we should try and compare trauma in the sense of who has it "worse", such things are complicated and thats not what I am doing here. Its more of a character analysis. Thorfinn was heavily influenced by his culture and his father, he was really young when he would be traumatised by Thor's death. Yes he is older now, but he is heavily repressed emotionally. So much internal turmoil and strife. In this episode we saw Askeladd kill the person he hated while he was vulnerable in bed, he also killed a random woman... you know, a random woman that could have been a slave with a slave child... the same catalyst behind Askeladd's hated towards his father... except who was the inspirational/aspirational figure in Askeladd's life to help shape his morality and ideals? A mythical figure he has never met and wasn't there when he needed him most - Artorius. Askeladd has no qualms or ideals about killing someone in their bed/sleep, or a random person. He had a pretty shitty life and only really had himself to depend on, and a love for his mother who was also obviously unwell and suffering/struggling. In contrast, in a very early episode, Thorfinn had a similar opportunity to kill Askeladd in his sleep - when he was much younger, way further back in the season. He snuck into Askeladd's tent, when he was vulnerable and went to kill him... but he couldn't. Thorfinn hated him, but he loved his father, and he wants to attempt to emulate and understand what he thinks his fathers morals and ideals is... which he struggles with a lot (Thorkell even mocks him over that and the idea of what a true warrior is/tie in with what is true love) but he probably does think it has something to do with honour and thus couldn't kill Askeladd in his sleep because that would not be an honourable dual, in the eyes of his father, as he perceives them. The trippy part is... Thorfinn hates Askeladd for killing his father, but Askeladd has also become somewhat of a father figure in his life too... imagine the guilt and inner conflict Thorfinn must experience over such things? Also as he gets older, he probably wishes he understood Thor's philosophy and ideals more... but since he was traumatised at such a young young age (much younger than Askeladd) and his relatively happier life was flipped much faster and dramatically (surviving in the wild, forced to kill at a young age, seeing small villages pillaged and destroyed, having no support system, just amusement from the people around you also killing and looting etc) vs Askeladd who was formally trained and educated and warmly treated (still harbouring a deep resentment and goal of revenge...) Anyway it is no surprise that Thorfinn should come off a bit one dimensional, just because most of the time, the only way he can express himself is when he is killing random enemies/inflicting violence. He has stunted growth elsewhere, and then in the times he fights Askeladd he is overcome with emotion and rage that has never been processed, addressed, resolved or anything healthy, and if anything its festered and gotten worse with time and guilt and inner conflict and turmoil since he keeps failing, despite being a competent warrior, he is failing Thors and he probably is attached to Askeladd just can't admit it/stays in deep denial. So... I would argue he is actually pretty deep, just not in an outwardly articulate and charismatic way as Askeladd... who creatively speaking, needs to be that way, because it makes him more likeable, respectable. I won't even go into how Askeladd must view Thorfinn but that would be interesting to think about.
