The ladies of “The Real” discuss whether "SNL" cast member Melissa Villaseñor’s tweets crossed the line. They also weigh in on the Federal Appeals Court ruling which states that employers can legally choose not to hire someone based on how they wear their hair.

Lmao dead 💀 as a Latina with long af super thick straightish (just cause the weight) hair this made me ctfu. Sometimes I wash my hair every other week and it still don't get greasy (it's really healthy tho except for a few end pieces.) and once thru a bout of really bad depression I didn't wash it for a month and by the time I washed it wasn't that greasy. Guess I trained it? Idk. And yes I still wash my body even if I don't wash my hair. Tho during that month of depression my electricity was cut off so it was only quick sink sponge baths and lots perfume, deodorant, and good smelling creams. I would only leave the apt to do uber and buy food which I actually got lots of compliments on my smell. Still mildly depressed, but the most mild I been in my life that I can remember and I'm actually optimistic for the future:)

I think it is represented by women of color but not focused on. Do they touch base of minorities and women of color? Yes. They absolutely do. But they also touch base with tons of topics that nerd discussed. I never once felt like they were hating on white people and I am the whitest of whites. Not once do I feel offended by the show and enjoy watching it to get an understanding of perspectives different from my own. When it came to the time of brushing my hair out, I cried, the strength my locs had given me was being taken so I could in turn take care of myself. No one should have to experience that feeling. If you are qualified for the job and the only thing holding back someone to hire you is hair, it is time that not just businesses owners but everyone is educated properly about locs!! i don’t think she was laughing, necessarily. i think she was just smiling out of respect since it’s awkward to just sit there listening while the audience watches her, you know? she might have just smiled at the audience, or something, but she definitely didn’t seem to laugh.

It's OK to be racists as long as you're a comedian! No. Being a comedian doesn't make it OK to be racist. I mean those tweets weren't even jokes, they were just stupid. There is a way to be funny and she just looked desperate and stupid. There are tasteful jokes and tasteless jokes, and hers are tasteless. p.sI love when Jeanie wears her hair up, I noticed she's been wearing it down which is beautiful but I just love to see her face and the purple look today is on point!

You can “make fun” of a group of people because you’re playing in stereotypes. So like Adrienne said, you aren’t laughing at them, you are laughing with them 🤷🏾‍♀️. When comedians make jokes about black people, it’s funny, same with jokes about other races. Because there is a hint of truth to stereotypes 🤷🏾‍♀️

Today in the Caribbean locks are still discriminated against 😕 Have those employers never heard of a natural hair salon?
@SeychelleSunshine
@SeychelleSunshine 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. I'm first-gen Jamaican-American and locs still have that negative connotation that stemmed from slavery. A lot of leaders of the slave revolts in the Caribbean were Rastas. Dutty Boukman was a Jamaican Rasta slave. He was eventually moved and enslaved in Haiti, where he became one of the main leaders of the Haitian slave revolution. Over time, respect from the community was taken by those in power from the Rastas to weaken the sense of rebellion against oppression. Rastas became depicted as criminals or lazy degenerates who just smoke all day, hate the rules and the government. I hate that a lot of Jamaicans have fed into the stereotype as well, especially considering the Rastas played a huge part in freeing us and holding our communities together through and after slavery

Dreadlocks originated in India (unlike most cite Egypt as their birth place) with the dreadlocked deity Shiva and his followers. The pharaohs wore dreads, but their first literary mention is said to be in the Hindu Vedic scriptures dating from around 1700BC. The God Shiva wore ‘matted’ dreadlocks.So it is the Indians who have the dubious honour of 'inventing' dreadlocks, and we could reasonably conclude that the African Egyptians culturally appropriated dreads from them. Next came the ancient Greeks. According to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have 'hair like snakes' Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn dreadlocks too. Dreadlocks have been around for ages in countless civilisations and among several distinct peoples. It is certain that earlier civilisations didn’t have all the hairstyling gear and products we now possess, and were most likely roaming around with matted hair, regardless of their origin or race. In ancient Greece for example, some of the earliest depictions of dreads date back to 3600 BC. As such, many civilisations in Asia Minor, Caucasus, the Near East, East Mediterranean and North Africa have been depicted wearing locked hairstyles during the Iron and Bronze Ages.

I just hired a beautiful young woman with locs to be our company's bookkeeper. My knee jerk reaction had this been two years ago, I admit it, I would have stereotyped her. It is only because of social media that I have learned people with locs can indeed be intelligent, driven and organized individuals. Just as this new bookkeeper clearly is. As for the SNL cast mate and her Tweets, Adrienne nailed it...if you have to delete something you post in social media, that speaks volumes. I censor myself all the time. If I post something that I know isn't posted at a time when I was in a good mood, and I question the comment's appropriateness, I will delete it. Because when I am in a bad mood, it shows in my social media posts. My mindset, ask yourself, if what you are going to post is going to be viewed by the entire world, broadcast on every TV, would you be okay with it? If the answer is no, delete it.
