Much has been made lately of loading density, and some claiming it is “the” top aspect for accurate loads. However it is just one of many aspects that all need to meld together to make up an accurate load for any caliber.

Ive started checking everything I hear or read about hand loading against Randy's videos. The more i engage in this exercise, the more convinced I become that 2/3 of the information one can find is useless. Im not especially interested in gunsmithing, due to cost prohibitions, but I am determined to become a professional precision hand loader. The shortest and least expensive route to my goal is listening to and following his advice. The life lesson here is: find someone doing successfully what you want to do, and do what they do.

Another beauty of a video! Randy is the very definition of “OG”. He’s gotta be top 3, or better, still around for this craft. He built the tools for the tool in order to create the tool! So, when he reads some article written by a “highly” touted gun guru who just writes about the “candy” and doesn’t go in depth, because he doesn’t know the in depth part, it fries his Old School Ass! 😂 I find it quite entertaining listening to all the situations that become the video!! BTW, I want the 7mm-.404 Wapati Express something bad!! Keep’em coming Randy!!

I've been a fan of Hart barrels for 20 years. Just mailed Jim Hart an action yesterday to install a 7mm 8 twist 24 inch fluted barrel chambered in 7mmPRC. Personally I see nothing wrong with this new caliber and it seems some of the hype around it has ruffled feathers for some but at the end of the day, I believe it's a nice design and I want to try it. Of course I'm going to be using factory ammo just for the brass so I can handload thereafter. I suspect Lapua and Norma will be on board to make brass in the near future. I'm very interested in getting a Randy Selby rifle: 24 inch Hart #4 barrel chambered in 6.5-284 Norma, Left hand Tikka T3x action, aftermarket spring for the trigger so as to get a 1.5 to 2 pound pull, McMillan Game Scout stock. Aftermarket bottom metal is available. I'd have to research more on that

Dear friend: great to see you again. I just went through the annoying process of calling out the BS regarding the 300 PRC. Any 30 caliber magnum can achieve or exceed the published performanceof the PRC (considering rifles chambered in 300 PRC are by design, specialty items). The marketing intent was obviously to produce barreled actions specifically designed to support cartridges with an overall length, (those very long, heavy A-tips I love so much) The standard commercial chamber dimensions of other 30 caliber magnums cannot load such cartridges into the magazine, feed, chamber and extract. Unless custom guns are made, which is the point. The gentleman was addressing the hunting population, not the very small market niche paper punchers including myself fall into. I am also a hunter, and his 'quarter mile benchmark' (440 yards) in a woodland hunting environment is absurd, and by the standards of many, pushing it out your way

The power of advertising often distracts the average shooter. Yet I have had some amazing performance with a specific Match ammo, that just clicked well with the match rifle it was used in, exceeding the accuracy of my reloads, which I wasn't sure could be exceeded, significantly in any case. The difference in one or more components was more suited to extended ranges in that particular rifle. I was satisfied with .75 m.o.a. at 850 yards, perhaps not F-class material but a benchmark which can only be exceeded if all variables are considered and recorded. HART is outstanding. I prefer Douglas air gauged heavy match barrels.

You are again so right with your assessment. The difference in barrel quality is enormous and has the biggest influence on accuracy. I owned rifles with very poor barrels, that had rough spots on which the copper and powder residues just created tight spots. You could not get them to shoot on a dinner plate at 100 yards. After lapping them, equalizing the crown they became 1 to 2 MOA rifles, but a poor barrel will never become a superior one. If you know what you are looking at with a borescope, and most people do not, you can see immediately why Hart, Bartlein, Shilen and Lothar Walter barrels are shooting so well. Skinny barrels appear to me to be the most finicky. It takes some reloading and testing to find a harmonic node, varying components and seating depth. today it has become a fashion to invent hot rounds that burn enormous amounts of powder to gain a few feed per seconds more than balanced cartridges do, like the 7 x 57, 338 Win or the 30-06. I do not get it, why do we have to invent new stuff, when the old rounds do the same or even a better job. Thanks for your excellent videos.

Yep. No such thing as premium factory ammunition. Have to try and see IF any of it shoots well in the gun you bought it for. Some guns/barrels are very particular and test your patience finding a bullet and weight, powder and charge, primer and OAL. Sometimes they want FL sizing every time and others they just want the neck sized back down. Too many variables for each gun for a factory to make any ammunition that’s good across all or even a large portion of them. Some rifles will shoot absolutely anything too, from my observations. Buddy has a Winchester Model 70 from the late 60’s that doesn’t seem to care about bullet weight, what brand of cartridges or bullet for reloading, it just flat shoots. I have experienced some of He other end though, where the rifle wants what it wants and won’t just tell me to save me some money.

Randy in the time I've become aquinted with your content there isn't a point, or practical concept that I can disagree with. The actual # 1,2,3 importance of components in hand is useless if at first you don't consistency. Such as uniform flash holes, primer pocket, and precise powder charge of the like. Something factory ammunition has never strives to achieve. Production #s is the lead to their bottom line. The only point of contention between us is that you give more credit to shooting writers than I. It is true writers have a great talent for pretty word's and Grammar, yet lacking in critical thinking of such matters. The hours of the debate of said arbiters of the industry, and me, hashed out at Virginian Hotel of Medicine Bow. The conversation always starts, and ends with what the definition of a long range cartridge is, with little data at hand. The argument being always the latest and greatest a manufacturer has tasked them with, along with the the company's twist of greatness. Writing articles of there bliss. All in the name of the bottom line of both company, and writers. After all this isn't it as puzzling to you, as it is to me this odd trend for the ultimate RUM, or PRC, with large slow burn capacities? Only lighten, shorten, and add brutality, only to fall of efficiency, wasting potential of capacity. Ok Randy i,m done ranting now. I always ♥️ your content. Especially when you your outside. Great Video Randy. I would love for you to do a video on these heavier 25 cal bullets vs the older tried and true 100-120grs for the 25-06? For instance a 110gr going over 3000 fps vs the newer 130gr + at 2800fps or so? Seems like people are trying to turn the 25-06 into something it is not! And that is in my opinion is a over 500 yard cartridge. If you keep the 25-06 in the ranges its designed for (500 yards or less) there is no advantage to these 130+ gr bullets as far as BC is concerned! In my opinion BC don't mean crap inside of 500 yards on game! Thoughts!?

As usual, you make some great points here concerning what goes into creating quality ammunition, which is absolutely necessary for accuracy. Wouldn’t it be great if things were as simple as buying an off-the-shelf rifle and factory ammunition and getting half MOA groups the first time one sits down at the bench? I suspect the segment of the shooting public that is swayed by the so-called “PRC” or “Creedmoor” cartridge advertising are those that hope their experience will be just that easy. For some, maybe it is, but I’ve never been that lucky. More than a few shooters approach the search for accuracy like a wannabe golfer seeks to lower their score, by buying the next special club or super ball, when the problem is usually not the equipment, but the skill of the guy using it. As with many elements in life, it usually takes some hard earned experience to begin to really understand and appreciate the things you try to help educate folks about. When I started out years ago, I was unaware that it was time spent developing hand loading skill that would pay the biggest dividends in printing small groups on the target. Your tips on the importance of using a chronograph and measuring for case head expansion made a huge difference in finding the most accurate load for a given rifle for me. Having powder and primers in short supply the last few years sure made testing a wide variety of load possibilities difficult for a while, but availability seems to be improving lately, which will help the testing process. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge and experience on what you know works in the real world for improving accuracy. Few of us have access to a friend or relative with the level of knowledge you possess, so your videos are tremendously helpful for those of us with an interest in doing the best we can with our shooting. It’s been rewarding to apply the lessons and see tangible results. Thank you.

A rifle is much like a racecar in many ways. People don't understand that it costs gobs of money and effort to go fast and consistently. Change one variable and the rifle or racecar will act differently. Many marksman can't shoot up to what the rifle is capable of and blame the equipment. I consistently take what some say is junk or flawed and shoot better groups than they ever have. Skill outperforms equipment 99% of the time

I find the ELD type "Hype" bullets need to be seated out longer. I have been playing with .308 a lot. Funny thing is a 110 grain flat based low BC bullet can be shot at and over 3,000 FPS, extremely flat trajectories, precise inside of 6-700 yards. The only place high bc shines is wind deflection and extreme long range paper punching, outside of any real ethical hunting distance with a .308.

I guess that depends on what you consider long range. A G1 BC increase of 70 can make a difference of over 1 MOA elevation and 1 MOA wind age in a 10 mph crosswind at 400 yards. Personally I think that shines pretty bright

@@jerryhorton2899you are missing the point a .550 g1bc 178grain is traveling around 500 fps slower than the 110grain .300g1bc in my experience. So inside of 6-700 yards the 110 outperforms in drop. Put a .308 178 at 2600fps into a ballistic calculator. Then compare it to a 110 .308 at 3100 fps. You will see. The velocity difference of the light bullet yields less drop. Its not until 6-700 yards the high bc bullet has an advantage in elevation. I have tested this i know its right. You are not accounting for the massive change in velocity… which is around 500 fps.

Sure that 110 shoots faster than a 178 and it’s great for white tails at relatively close range, but which one do you want for elk at 400 yards? I don't know if Hornady is designing better cartridges or not. What I do know is 1. Hornady marketing is second to none in the ammo business 2. Hornady is a privately owned company and I suspect they are focus right now on building generational wealth, not short term profits 3. 6.5 creedmoor number 1 selling cartridge last few year 4. They followed up the successful selling creedmoor with 6.5 prc, 300prc, 7 prc. I firmly believe they will come out with a 300 creedmoor and 7 creedmoor. This goal is for 300 prc to outsell 300 win mag sale. The 300 creedmoor will be designed to eventually outsell 308 and 30 06. 7prc outsell 7 rem mag. 6.5 prc is magnum for 6.5 creedmoor success. 7 creedmoor more will be lighter recoiling 7 prc. My opinion is Hornady is a great business but I don't know if there good for the industry, I don't know if they built a better cartridge. What I do know is there kicking the competition ass right now. So I decided to build a 7prc over rem mag because I think in 5 years you will 7 prc on every shelf and 7 rem mag will over time disappear from the self. I hope I'm wrong

Isn't gunwerks close to you they would be able to help you understand the CONCEPT OF THE 7 PRC. just because the 7 prc is not a good fit for you doesn't mean it is not a good fit for other people. It also seems like every mayor rifle company is chambering the 7 prc . I am pretty sure most people are aware that a good rifle needs good ammo to shoot . Also people who buy a 7 prc are NOT BUYING a bench rifle . THEY ARE BUYING A LONG RANGE HUNTING RIFLE . also I think alot of people will not be able to shoot the 7 prc to its full potential. For those people who only shoot 400 to 450 yards max they should stick with a 7 rem mag. I own 2 or a 280 or 280 ai . I would really like to see you hit a target at 2000 yards with one of your builds not that I would shoot at a game animal at that distance or anything close to it. But I think you would have a lot better understanding of the cartridge. And why it will follow in the the footsteps of the 6.5 creedmoor ,6.5 prc,300 prc I think the 7 prc will be the most popular cartridge ever. My favorite is the 300 prc

Randy fails to realise that hornady is filling a demand for off the shelf customers. Hornady, working with rifle manufacturers to build fast twist rifles with freebore to accommodate heavier bullets is a good thing. It's allowing bullets to be seated out further which equals more case capacity. If Randy would take a moment to stop padding himself on the back for all the great things he thinks he's done he'd maybe be able to see what manufacturers are doing by filling a void in the market.

@@paulsullivan9697 you must have tagged the wrong person? Because your reply to me makes zero sense to what i wrote. The difference between fast and slow twist barrels? For years everyone wanted speed. Speed sold rifles so they put slow twist barrels on to optimize the lighter bullets for caliber because people wanted to shoot fast. The market has changed and demand is now heavy bullets with high BC bullets. BC is an arbitrary number associated to how efficient the bullet flys through the air. More efficient the bullet flys the more energy down range on game. Hornady as been working with rifle manufacturers to chamber rifles with fast twist barrels to stabilize heavier bullets and producing ammo with heavier bullets for that reason. Manufacturers are working to provide ammo and rifles for off the shelf box store customers to take advantage to heavier bullets that the custom rifle crowd and reloaders have been doing for years. I don't know where you got flex tips and 55g accelerators out of anything i mention.

@@TheRealGunsmith Hi Cathy, I am not at all being critical. Taped to time is the most difficult to do- And Randy appears to d o it all off the cuff - most impressive!. It finally occurred to me on this video that he was doing taped to time. So I assumed all the videos were done that way. To me all of your videos are very impressive. I think I watched every one you made. I wish I could see your paid videos. For what it is worth I have given t ups to all your videos. Too bad that is not easy? for u to see- take care- sam.

Cathy, the thing I really love and respect about your videos is watching Randy speak from his experience with no fluff added. It's as if we are all listening to him on the phone while having a coffee. Take care from Alberta🇨🇦

So you just spent 30 minutes to say you can build a custom rifle at 6 times the price of a mass produced factory rifle and hand load ammo that’s more accurate than a factory rifle with mass produced factory ammo? Did anybody ever doubt that?

Since you mentioned picking a subject to hang your hat on, wouldn’t it be nice if someone did an honest comparison of just how much accuracy you get for all that extra money? For instance I have a bone stock $1000 factory rifle that shoots 3/8 5 shot groups at 1000 yards with hand loads and an $8600 custom that shoots 1/4 inch

He said you have to to do those things to guarantee accuracy but they’re claiming you don’t with the 7mm PRC. Did you watch this for 30 min and NOT gather this simple point?

@@BlairStOnge who exactly is claiming this? I guess I must have missed who “THEY”are.

Pierce r Who are you calling bad people that needs to be put down ??? It seems you are one of the ones that just throws command sense out the window and will shoot game at any distance, with no regard of the outcome !! Hope I am not judging you wrong or misunderstanding what you posted!

@realgunsmith What are your thoughts on Krieger barrels?

They vary in groove size from barrel to barrel. I don't have that issue, ever, with Hart barrels. Thanks for watching.
