Randy tells three stories of himself and two of his friends, each in different situations, of getting hypothermia.
Randy experienced hypothermia while on an elk hunt with our friend, Ray Schmidt, when we all lived in the Fort Collins area.
Another friend, Kenny Underwood, after getting stuck in Suburban multiple times, got hypothermia and in his confusion came to our home for help instead of his own home or his parents.
Finally, another friend, Keith Dahlem, who still lives in the same community we live in, fell through ice, but with shallow water, was able to break through, and Randy was able to get him to the nearby ski lodge owned by his family.
It is nothing to mess with. Always act quickly if you suspect you or anyone you are around is experiencing hypothermia.

I broke thru the ice in the Beaufort Sea off the north coast of Alaska at minus 40 or more. I was dressed well for the cold. We were all laughing about it so I was going to walk up to the rig camp to get some dry clothes on, about 3-4 hundred yards. About 50 yards from the door I turned into a statue and that was as far as I was going. Someone in the camp saw me and helped me in. I was never cold, no warning, no shivering or anything! I would have died right there! My body just quit!

Good Message. I grew up outdoors in Minnesota winters my whole life. 5 years ago, I encountered hypothermia in Arizona in February riding dirt bike. 60 degrees all day & we got out of the canyon too late after sundown. Temps dropped to 25 degrees & I had a real bad time coming out of it. The only thing that kept rolling through my mind was, “On my tombstone, it will read, Here lies Tom, from MN & he froze to death in AZ”

Great stories! One danger that many outdoorsmen overlook is hypothermia is the summer. I realize it sounds crazy, but I know of instances where people were in the backcountry at high elevation and got caught unprepared in July-Aug frontal systems with rain/snow and became hypothermic. A frontal system can easily drop temps down into the mid 30s at any time during the summer and a cold wet rain can easily turn into hypothermia for people who are not adequately prepared with the right clothing.

Dehydration is real in all climates. Staying hydrated is important for proper blood circulation which will either help keep you warm in winter or cooling you in summer. It's easy in cold temps to chill from sweat that saps energy as your body cools. Wool clothing will stay warm even when wet. Cotton clothing will chill you to the bone once it gets wet. It's better to be slightly cold when walking to a hunting stand then add clothing to stay warm instead of working up a sweat then chilling after you stop moving. Even in 40F temps you can chill if sitting or reclining on cold ground without some barrier between your clothing and the ground. Also, sitting on a rock will chill you fast whereas sitting on a wood log will be a lot warmer. If you're hunting in a state where a blaze orange hat is required wear a mesh summer orange cap when moving then put a stocking cap over the cap once you stop moving around. A lot of body heat is radiated thru your head plus you can keep from overheating by allowing your head to be used as a radiator when moving around.

It’s hard to say when it will hit you. I’ve worked in -20 or more hundreds of times. The most serious hypothermia I ever had was on a sunny 40 degree day when I was fishing.

Thank you Randy. Many oldtimers that still read( Have read many, many books, and magazines since the 60's) , ask you to write down your memories and you don't have the time. But with todays tech.Something like and audio book could be compiled from your Videos for sale. Thanks and keep it up

Thanks for sharing another great story. You sir have had a great impact on me. Through your stories and educational videos I’ve learned a lot abt amo firearms and more importantly a way of life. You represent the standard of what Americans should strive to be. It’s such a sad society we live in. i love these stories, and ive been there and done that myself in the cold. but i made it. sat by woodstove in the wall tent for more than a hour before i came around. but iam still here to tell the story

It really is. Cathy's grandparents lived in Bellvue, near Grave's dairy. Her Grampa built their alfalfa dehydrator and was their mechanic, as well as other mechanic work. Her Gramma continued doing some smaller mechanic work for them after his death, for the Graves until age and health issues, at 90, required she move closer to Cathy's Mom's place in WY. So she has a lot of fond memories of the area, also. There was recently [last few years] a record book ram taken out of the Poudre canyon area. Thanks for watching.

Wear Wool clothing when you are hunting. Wool will keep you warm regardless if it is wet. Used to live and hunt in the rainforests of the Northwest, Wool never let me down……"

As an added caution, be aware that temperature itself is not the only factor that will kill you. You may be dressed just fine to handle the temperature until the wind gets up and the wind chill makes your clothing totally inadequate. It doesn’t take much wind to drop the wind chill to insufferable levels.

It is very important, especially in the winter, to keep hydrated. It's hard to remember to drink water when it's -30 but crucial. If you are feeling thirsty, you are already slightly dehydrated. Also, minimize how much of your body is in contact with frozen ground. It'll suck the heat out of your body really quickly. Same for water. It's the worst. 5 minutes in +50 water will kill you. #1 best thing to do is to think, which is really difficult when hypothermia sets in. 😊😊😊

Impossible for a small shop. Only large production companies can afford to make a rifle in that price range. I can't get the components needed to make a custom rifle package for that price, let along my time and work. I don't cater to the masses, no small company can. Thanks for watching.
