We are living through an incipient technological revolution. AI, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, commercial space travel, and other innovations are rapidly transforming everything from the workplace to the financial architecture of the global economy. While many of these technologies hold vast potential to benefit the social good, the multinational corporations and financial oligarchy that drive innovation and own its products are solely motivated by private profit. The consequences are unfolding all around us. As technology and the power of the oligarchy advances, the misery and disenfranchisement of the majority grows. We are now in an age of "Space Barons and Techtitans", and the future they are leading us to is one of even greater exploitation, inequality, and ecological crisis. Loretta Napoleoni, author of Technocapitalism: The Rise of the New Robber Barrons and the Fight for the Common Good, joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the technocapitalist present and future described in her book.

@@agborie The white paper was just the intention like 15 years ago but reality today is different. If it was really decentralised, why so many exchanges? Let's not even talk about how many of those exchanges have been involved in fraud. Imagine you had a few thousand BTC cos you were early on it and now have tens of millions worth, try getting all that out in cash. And then where does that cash come from, it doesn't add value but takes from it. Dilutes the money supply that was born from actually valuable work. This is no different that the Moloch Money Magic known as fractional reserve lending, etc that the white paper intended for BTC to combat. It has been hijacked by the 1%, as usual.

How is bitcoin acquired in the first place.. and if having it can be used to make money, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having it in the first place? The fact that it’s one of the least used currencies speaks to the lack of usefulness and the futility of investing in something that only exists in the online world and could disappear with the flip of a switch.

I suggest doing some research into Bitcoin. It's a bit too much to explain in a you tube comment but it's not that difficult. It can be sold for money but cannot be used to "make money". The Bitcoin network may be the most secure network eve made. Every transaction is publically viewable. No one controls the network, it cannot be shutdown unless you switch off the entire internet. Really hard to manipulate the trade of Bitcoin when the ledger is public and distributed, and anyone can see the bitcoin balance of an exchange or fund, and no barrier exists to any company willing to participate in the market. Note that our governments are doing everything they can to keep exchanges tightly controlled by Wall Street. People can own the asset, and it is very, very hard for governments and industry to strip Bitccoin/crypto from the people who hold those assets. The danger to Bitcoin is not corporations because they can't break cryptography. But Bitcoin and its users can be run down by the force of governments. Governments are controlled by either socialists or corporate interests. Only limiting government influences by the incentives created by Bitcoin and the whole crypto sector gives us hope.

We already know the Bitcoin balances of every new Spot ETF, even if they never disclosed or reported those balances. Crypto analysts just looked on the blockchain and figured it out. Thank you for this, Chris. I'm been an admirer of yours for years. You do a lot of very good work. For everybody, I think the only way you can really fight back is to ditch the ball-and-chain. Go back to a flip phone if you have to have mobile communications at all for any reason. The more people give it up, which I know is very hard right now, the easier it will be for others. Two-step authentication? Find someone else to do business with. Yes, it's hard. The people who are most concerned about this, such as Diana Kordas, who has been documenting the impact of 4G and 5G on farming and the environment on the Greek island of Samos, are now boycotting mobile communications altogether, i.e., not even calling cellphone numbers. It's a growing crisis.

Bitcoin is continuing the same problem. It is not a solution. We are capable of creating more than enough stuff, and food, for every woman and man on this planet. There is much work to reach that goal. Once there, less than 10% of the population would be needed to maintain everything. It is happening as I typed this. It has been happening for quite some time.

No, we aren't. Overshoot Day was August 2nd last year. You cannot have infinite growth on a finite planet.

In 1898, 60 to 70% of the workforce was dedicated to the production of food. Currently, it is less than 5%. That means the workforce today is less than half the size of 1898. Doing more with less is not limited to just food. What is the problem? Distribution. You have to take one more thing into account, the monetary system is a behavioral disorder. If aliens came by our planet and took every ounce of gold and silver, we would still have all the same problems. Since we are unwilling to educate our sons and daughters, it is hopeless. It doesn’t have to be.

There's so many books and never anything that comes of them. I just get more annoyed and less tolerant of my family and people in my vicinity, with each one I read. The world is broken and so many people are busy fighting culture wars while the world burns. I can't even send this video to friends because they wouldn't know what to do with this information. As a bear of very little brain, I found no answer in Loretta's explanation of bitcoin to this question: I invest say $100 in a cryptocurrency, expecting to be able to use it as I do 'real' $. I go into a pizza parlor, order, then want to pay in cryptocurrency. How? What's the equivalent of a credit/debit card or real cash, and how is it turned over to the vendor? Now, if I change my mind about the investment, how do I get my $100 back in cold hard cash - or even transfer to my regular bank account? Also I don't see it as inflation proof. A seller just has to raise their price, have me fork over more bitcoin, at the seller's choice of price. Maybe all this has simple answers, but I couldn't find them.

The USD has the implied support of the US (meaning the US economy as an ongoing enterprise). It is also the principal settlement currency for oil contracts. Most USD circulates outside of the US (petrodollars). It’s just disingenuous to equate this with arbitrary “trust” in cyber or other currencies.

what happens when no more bitcoin can be mined? Does it's value drop at that moment or even before? quantum computers, which should be passing traditional computation in another few years, will be able to solve the bitcoin equations within moments. So this 150 year timeline that was highlighted does not see plausible.

I wonder if she will estimate the amount of energy, BC will consume if in ten years a big chunk of the population will use it. As I heard, with every transaction, the blockchain gets longer, and the next transaction consumes more energy than the previous. Will it blow up the power grid in most parts of the world. Here in Germany we will prosumedly be allowed to make transactions only the hours, when the sun shines hot, or the wind blows ideally.

According to the United States Treasury Department, cash is the preferred method for money laundering by criminals and organizations, rather than cryptocurrencies.
