The 2023 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid Platinum Is A Massively Improved Large Tundra SUV

We finally got a chance to drive the 2023 #ToyotaSequoia for a full week and it is obviously a huge improvement over the previous model which was literally one of the oldest new vehicles on the market. This #SequoiaPlatinum is not quite the fully loaded version, but Toyota really pulled out all the stops for this new large family SUV. The #SequoiaHybrid gets the best MPG of all its rivals that run on gasoline, but with the #Hybrid components, owners will need to sacrifice interior and cargo room versus most rivals.

Happy Friday guys! Sorry for the late post, we are in Nashville right now and spent the day driving the new CR-V! Excited to share our thoughts on redesigned Sequoia, they should be going into production next month and in dealer lots shortly after that. We love how Toyota made it a hybrid, but do you think they should consider making a non-hybrid and a longer version?

GREATEST REVIEW so far! I went to see one today and I somewhat loved it. It stands bigger than it looks on the computer with a lot more tech than my older model. The deal breaker for me was the ridiculously smaller trunk space. The trunk is a lot narrower than the older model both vertically and horizontally due to the slightly oval shape of the upper entry part of the trunk sides as well as the height of the rear seats . I was so disappointed and walked away feeling like it would be a waste to buy it but cant carry regular stuff in my trunk like I've done with the older model.

The Sequoia engineers/designers should have been fired long ago. All Toyota had to do was copy the competition and make it more reliable. I buy Camrys because of reliability, there has never been a wow factor.
@ivanlowjones

What about the families of the engineers and designers you're calling to be fired? Should they suffer just because you don't like the design of a vehicle you aren't forced to purchase? Toyota will sell as many of these as they can build and engineers and designers will be handsomely compensated for their work.

I dont think it’s the engineer and designers fault. It is the market research team that needs to go. It is their job to tell designers and engineers what consumers want. The market research team clearly did not tell the engineers that consumers actually want cargo space and a good 3rd row.

What a great review. You nailed this one. All other reviewers have been focused on all of the upgrades which are pretty standard for vehicles now, and you nailed it with main issues here. This vehicle missed the mark on cargo and 3rd row design. The purpose of a vehicle like this is to have that option of 3rd row seating or massive cargo space, what a disappointment from Toyota. I want to love this new sequoia, I was really close to getting a last generation TRD Pro but the age of the design and lack of techology was too hard to accept. This vehicle improved on all the issues with the old one, but now missed the mark which for me are deal breakers, which is the space, the lack of auto 4x4, and some wonky trim level options (slightly less annoying). Long story short thanks for a great review, very unbiased and thorough. Appreciated.

Yes, since last January I thought I’d be trying to get one of these. But the more I saw and thought about the third row and storage area, the more I realized it’d be a nagging issue that would not resolve itself. I’ve been swayed back towards the Tahoe route primarily because of their rear independent suspension and flat loading floor. Bummer, because that power train on the Sequoia is so sweet.

@@daneswanson7031 same. I had been patiently waiting for this new generation of Sequoia the last few years to be our family hauler/road trip vehicle since we use my pro tundra for that now and was hoping for a 20+mpg highway SUV with decent storage. The word disappointed doesn't come close to how I feel about the new tundra and Sequoia. They had so long to make them great in their segments and failed miserably.

@@urs6onfuturas975 I agree fully. Toyota could’ve stolen so many customers away from the American brands. Also, I know that there’s lots of standard equipment on the Sequoia which is great if you get an SR5. But having to spend over $70k just to get second row bucket seats is also frustrating. I would imagine there’s a lot of other families out there who are easy to get their post-COVID-road-trippin on. Hope you find something great for you and your family.

Good overall review. Since this vehicle is replacing the Land Cruiser in the US it makes sense to have the solid rear axle and locking rear diff. Some will argue auto 4 is more desirable and that makes sense in rainy/snowy areas but from a true off road perspective a live axle with locker would be preferred. For myself who lives in the south of the US I would not want a full time 4WD vehicle. Conversely that live axle plus the battery pack does eat into the cargo space which is a negative for many as well. I think this is a good effort overall but as the reviewer stated perhaps a non hybrid version or extended wheelbase version would be welcome additions in the future.

Another thing I don’t like is the loss of the V-8 engine. I know everybody’s concerned about mpg but I’m “old school” and a V-8 was the choice in large vehicles like the SUV category. I do love the new styling, they did a great job on that but as you mentioned if you’re taking 6 or 7 people on a trip and their luggage you don’t want this vehicle. Im pretty sure toyota realizes if you want to haul additional people the third row gives the capabilty. But in most cases family sizes are less than 6, and folding the third row for more storage allows you to load more in the back anyway so they didnt feel like it needed to be bigger. Plus that hybrid battery needs space too.

Missing a non hybrid version, especially since Toyota is supposed to be using the electric motors for performance and not for increasing mpg. Even more with the tight space in the 3rd row. I do not care much about the flat cargo, but not veing ablento fit an adult in the back is a big loss compared to some of the american offerings. Plus, if there is one thing domestic companies do well is big suvs, hard market to offer a product that it is missing in these departments.

Sofyan, the thing I'm seriously bugged about with Toyota, especially on the high trim models, is the NO fully adjustable passenger front seat. An 80K top trim Sequoia has an 8-way driver and 4-way passenger. So basically, the guy/gal riding shotgun gets a flat seat with little or no adjustment. That stinks at that price point! Tell Toyota to knock that off! (Btw) Great review as always, your reviews are so informative! Thank You

With the decrease in cargo room, Toyota definitely should’ve at least considered adding a long version to the Sequoia lineup this year to compete with the Suburban, Expedition Max, etc. That way you could have plenty of comfortable 3rd row room since it is moveable and enough cargo space.

@@jermainec2462 right some people's logic when you buy a truck or want one that bad that means gas savings is out of the window. Be smart when making decisions and ask yourself if you can actually afford it or keep moving. It's the same concept when people buy the corolla sedan, they expect zoom zoom speed when many don't realise that it's the gas savings that you are buying for. The more gas per gallon saved, the quick acceleration is compromised. So my 2020 Corolla the highway mileage is 38mpg but that also means it's not going to be quick 0-60. Speed and gas savings don't mix, choose one or the other.

As for the interior it is not so good as I wanted. Big, powerfull, stylish and expensive dinosaur. What else one need from the modern Japan SUV? I only add it badly needs more luxury: masage and ventilated seats in dark brown colour and of couse a fragrance like in Mercedes S class. The best SUV from Toyota right now. I totally understand people who invest in "bank of Toyota" products - they already tested american quality and made their choice.
