The 2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro Carries The Torch As A Flagship Off-Road Ready SUV

Once consider the automotive equivalent to a dinosaur, the #ToyotaSequoia got the full redesigned it desperately needed last year. The #SequoiaTRDPro sits at the top of the trim hierarchy with the Capstone trim but brings the most off-road capable hardware to the table. Borrowing most of the hardware from the #TRDPro Tundra, the new #Sequoia is a handsome, luxurious, capable, electrified full-size SUV that can almost do it all, unless you need to carry maximum people and their stuff.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all had a great week! Just like the Tundra, Toyota basically offers two top trims in the Sequoia, for about $80k, would you guys go with the more luxury oriented Capstone trim or the tough off-road ready TRD Pro?

Neither Tahoe Wagoneer expedition all day long. They may cost the same if not more but that’s entirely justified because they’re better cars unlike this

To answer your question, I think the Capstone would be better. Sure it’s not a better ride per se, due to the sold rear axle, but it would seem that most Sequoia buyers like the luxurious of the Capstone more than the TRD Pro. If I was buying a Sequoia, probably a Platinum.

I'm curious what your acceleration numbers would look like in Tow plus. In my Tundra it really speeds it up.

Sofyan, I thought your review was very comprehensive. As Toyota's chief truck engineer stated at the time of launch, design and budget compromises had to be made to get head office approval for a new version of this low volume model. Most complaints about the Sequoia's drivetrain can be easily overcome by simply having Toyota import base models of the Land Cruiser 300 Series. That model offers permanent four wheel drive with locking differentials galore for serious off road duty. I am in favour of more consumer choices. As long as a vehicle meets our regulatory standards, we ought to be able to buy it. The new Tacoma will also offer a full-time 4WD option so there is no reason Sequoia and Tundra could not incorporate the same feature. 😉

Bahahaha! I saw these in person at the Toyota dealership. They have one thing going for them in my opinion and that’s the exterior looks. This car is absolutely huge on the outside with some of the worst use of space on the inside I’ve ever seen from a full size SUV.

Totally agree on the lack of full time 4WD. I drive a Platinum version and really like it overall, but would like a full time 4WD as well as either the MTS or even the old ATRAC system. The rear shelf system works fairly well, but needs to be able to hold up itself when the extension flaps are deployed; support for the shelf is too dependent on the position of the 3rd row seats. Best highway mileage I've hit is 22mpg, but you really need other vehicles to draft off to achieve that; there is a huge MPG difference if your trip is uphill vs downhill.
@jaydenp.6243

I just wish the trunk was an even just a couple more cubic feet of space would defiantly make it more useful when the 3rd row is being used/up. Other than that I think this vehicle is perfect for the most part. In fact I saw a Capstone trim the other day and I gotta say it looked sharp, I'd get it over the Tahoe for sure.

After forcing us to wait well over a decade for a full redesign, Toyota failed in the overall packaging of this new Sequoia. They've had plenty of time to study the competition and yet still fell short in delivering a spacious full size suv.

The flat cargo space is actually achievable if they move the battery to the spare tire space and move the spare tire to the hinge door. Caveat is that if you take the car extreme off-roading an impact the bottom of the battery this can set the battery on fire. But its the same with all the other electric suvs and trucks.

rear axle is a plus because its the only full size SUV with it, eazy to lift most ground clearance,doesn't have. wierd tire wear when towing,way better platform to make a preeruner or trail rig. It probably doesn't have 4wd auto because they are clutch based and overheat offroad when pushed hard although some transfer cases can do it without overheating.
