Performed by Clara Rockmore (1911-1998), the first performer to bring complete musical artistry to the theremin. This song from suit "The Carnival of the Animals" サン・サーンス「白鳥」 テルミン演奏:クララ・ロックモア

Her experience as a violin player really shows through. It is interesting that she reportedly came from a family of people with perfect pitch. Her sense of space (horizontally pitch in her right hand, and vertically loudness in her left hand) must be exquisite.

I learned about this woman many years ago thanks to many of these same videos that are still here on yt. She was a magnificent musician and played one of the most difficult instruments to play actual tunes on. Her theremin was given to her directly by it's inventor Leon Theremin who lived a very interesting life that's worth reading about. Probably most people with access to music, tv, and/or movies have heard a theremin at some point, but rarely has it been used with the same artistry of Clara Rockmore. It's nice to see Google's doodle bringing some recognition to this amazing musician.

Actually Clara Rockmore is very highly regarded as a musical virtuoso. She worked with Loen Theramin closely to develop the Theramin. She then invented the technique to play it that is still taught today. Her later association with Robert Moog led to him developing a commercially available Theramin. His work with that instrument inspired him to push further and invent the musical synthesizer in the 1960's.
@cr4zyj4ck3 жыл бұрын
The Theremin is arguably the most difficult instrument on the planet to learn to play well instead of just making strange alien noises. There is nothing to give you any cue about where to place your hands other than pure muscle memory.
@silassongs779 Жыл бұрын
@@richarddixon70 If you get a chance, scroll up a few msgs, and see her own words, not mine, about Tchaikovsky coming to see her play Theremin in US, and his request that she play Bach for him. She was indeed, and without doubt one of the finest musicians of any era. The only difference is that her preferred instrument was a more recent invention, yet that could not diminish neither her nor her magnificent musical abilities or her astounding and innate way of actually emoting on an completely "electronic" instrument. BTW, as a multi-instrumentalist who has TNTC instruments, including a Theremin, an old Fender Rhodes electric full case traveling electric piano, and one of the earliest Moog synthesizers that rolled off the production line, I'm right there with you on every word. 🤟🎼
@JobvanderZwan Жыл бұрын
@@richarddixon70 I guess "underrated" in this context is supposed to mean "more famous among the general public". But yes, she was highly regarded, but "merely" by her own peers. Personally I think that might be the better kind of fame though - appreciated by people who know what they're talking about, and less hassle from everyone else!

This instrument is so cool, it uses antennas to create the sound and I honestly can't really wrap my head around it but all I know is that it's so cool and Clara is really good at playing it.
@lparisl38898 жыл бұрын
+Hannah M Well,just to clarify,it creates sound because of the changes in the electromagnetic field when someone puts their hand next to the antennas.Due to the sensitiveness of the antennas,the change is notified and tranformed into microwaves that indentify as sound.

Or try the online Theremin by Femurdesign and try to replicate Clara Rockmore's wonderful performance. I can't even play the simplest of melodies with any accuracy (much less feeling) - like the Christmas carol 'Joy To The World' or 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. I'd probably get a Moog 'Theremini', which has pitch control that makes it much, much easier for new users to play specific notes with accuracy, plus normal Theremin options. Lydia Kavina has a good demonstration of what it can do and gives hope for new users at 6m05s -- /watch?v=8bakI0ITCqQ

Her amazing Theremin playing did eventually get recognized and she started to make classical recordings which was her dream for the longest. Very inspirational musician, shows us that no matter what you can always play music your way regardless off what everyone else thinks.

one quick correction... she never did play anything but serious music on the theremin. Those who would score the theremin for movies etc., were others and played by others. She was adamant that this was a serious instrument and never flinched one inch from that pure stance (those who knew her knew that she wasn't the flinching sort on such topics).

I think I love everything about this video. The piece of music, the instrument, the performer, the setting, and the soft focus and warm tone of the film itself.

My dad just got a theremin and nobody at the house knows how to play it so all I've heard it play up until now is weird farting sloops. Then I sound this video and my first thought was "what the fuck that was beautiful."

hahaha I feel you!!! I tried to play one after seeing this video.....heh......

How's it going now, is he or are you getting better at it? I'm thinking of getting the Moog Theremini, supposed to make it a bit easier. I'd prefer the sound of an analog theremin though. No one will ever be this good, but good luck!

saw this video for the first time at the Museum of Musical Instruments and was similarly spellbound. fuck yeah theremins!!!

Wow - playing the Theremin is tough enough, but to pull off such a beautiful performance of Le Cygne on it like this is amazing. She had skills, mad skills.

I'd been wondering what instrument I was always hearing in old movies. I knew it couldn't be an opera singer, but I didn't think it be this, lol.

Damn this instrument is sooo underrated.. it's amazing what you can do with it .. from classics to psychedelic music ..

I remember hearing about this instrument before. They use it to make those spooky tunes in old movies and cartoon. Thanks to Google for reminding me about it and its creator!

@@MegaBadgeman Yes! However the violin is one of the instruments that comes the closest to the human voice!
@MegaBadgeman2 жыл бұрын
@@ingridwissink4899 I'm not sure but because violins strings are arranged in an arch the violin like other stringed instruments can play two notes together, something a vocalist can't normally do.
@ingridwissink48992 жыл бұрын
@@MegaBadgeman I'm a violinist so I'm aware lol! Playing double stops (2 notes at once) is less common in violin playing than single notes. I'm just talking about the overall timbre. People say the same about cellos and violas of course, they're like the equivalent of lower voices.

it's weird bc I found this from a meme of this song overlaid some among us knockoff flash game but the night after I saw it this song kept appearing in my dreams. it is so beautiful and it calms me down just to hear it. it's funny how the internet allows you to find stuff you never would have known about otherwise through the most random things

The Theremin sounds so elegant and luminous, Clara Rockmore's teacher was Leon Theremin (Sole Creator of the Theremin). She is also known as the Soul of a Machine and the greatest Theremin player to have ever lived.

I don't know if it already has been mentioned: search for: BEACH BOYS- Good Vibrations. They use a modified Theremin.
@VelvetCondoms5 жыл бұрын
Good Vibrations actually didn't use a Theremin. It sued a Tannerin. The Tannerin sounds similar but is a very different instrument.
@matthewsmith36324 жыл бұрын
They used an electrotheremin, invented by Dr. Paul Tanner, who also played trombone with Glenn Miller.
