Conservative former prime minister Theresa May told the Commons she accepts the findings of the Privileges Committee’s report.
She told MPs: “It is a rigorous report and I accept its findings.”
“It is not easy to sit in judgment on friends and colleagues,” she said, adding “but friendship, working together, should not get in the way of doing what is right.
“I commend the members of the Privileges Committee for their painstaking work, and for their dignity in the face of slurs on their integrity. To all the members of the committee, this House should… say thank you for your service.”
She added: “This committee report matters. This debate matters. And this vote matters. They matter because they strike at the heart of the bond of trust and respect between the public and Parliament that underpin the workings of this place and of our democracy.”

mostly virtue words. I don't believe she gives a damn about lying to the public or voters, that was just empty sound bites. The core of Johnsons crime was he lied to the institution called Parliament, and I think she understands that and escaped her own noose with her misleading Brexit means Brexit slogan to the Commons. Brexit meant Brexit... and I have no intent on leaving was her real truth.

I am not exactly her biggest fan but she was the last prime minister before we descended into the poisonous populism of personality. @@infinitedaryl2267 I can't help but agree with you on this point. I very much want to read this report myself! We have shown ourselves far too quickly in showing contempt towards those who are prepared to uphold their sense of responsibility and duty as citizens of this land. I have had some examples of this elsewhere. As I have been rightly determined to put up with no nonsense. Some have said that some of what I have been saying is rubbish. I've countered by saying that it's not comedic to put up with nonsense. We've been surrounded by too much nonsense and little substance these days! There's been one here! I'm no Tory, but May is a small section of Conservative I like. She was treated unfair in her term by the hard right of the party that led us in to the mess we are now in. Her soft brexit would of been less damaging than what we had. She wasn't a brexit supporter and she tried to negotiate the lest damage in our economy, as we can now see the state of this country.

Not just the Tories.. the whole lot of them over many years have ignored the public tax payer. They have insulted our intelligence and way of life. They all have cheated, schemed and lied to us. Both sides of the House have shamefully squandered opportunities just to get even or spite. I believe that they are liars, cheats and charlatans and have no real interest in making Britain a better place to be. The politicians sit there, and slag each other off instead of getting on with the real job. They cheat and lie and then say that they respect the people, and we should have faith and respect them. What damned hypocrites they all are .. no matter which party they are. Yes, 12 years and not much done..but TB had 12+ years and bankrupted the country and nothing was done. @Lynnefromlyn You are proving my point. So much confected outrage about Johnson, who is no more guilty of telling porkies than many other MPS. Including having a knees up during lockdown, (hey Starmer). And if you want to discuss who amongst the current reprobates in Parliament are worthy of investigation for dubious connections, perhaps look up Harman. The less than esteemed Chairwoman of this particular inquisition, who, if she had even a tiny bit of honour in her makeup, would have recused herself due to her blatant anti Boris bias. A bit of research into her past 'interests' would lead to her one time involvement with PIE. Now that was and is an outrage. Never mind Tony Blair and his dodgy dossier. Both dishonourable, both far more deserving of banishment from Parliament. But hey, cake eating is far, far more serious. But, of course, the main reason for all this hoo ha is really about the revenge of the Remainiacs. The likes of Heseltine, amongst others, rather giving the game away. He was immediately out of the blocks, demanding that as Johnson was now a 'proven' Liar, then Brexit must also be banished from Britain. Never mind that Democratic Referendum, won on the votes of all those appalling, uneducated peasants. Let our 'betters' retake control, they being far more suitable to lead this nation, preferably back into the arms of the EU. Yes, this whole long, ridiculous fiasco has proven just how low Parliament has sunk, and just how determined the remainiacs have been to obtain their pound of flesh.

I am far from a Tory supporter but it was clear to see May was put up as the sacrificial lamb after a vote to commit to something a lot of people truly didn’t want to do. And though she didn’t agree with the leave vote as a leader she tried her best to commit to the outcome and push it through. Yet she constantly had “the children” stood on the sidelines making lots of noise, creating obstacles and making things difficult and in some cases impossible to move forwards. Whilst smiling to her face and at the same time sharpening the knives they continually stabbed her in the back with. Out of the last five prime Ministers she maybe could have been the best and most reputable 🤷‍♂️

It’s rare that former PM’s continue as an MP after leaving Downing Street. Edward Heath was another exception as he was an MP for another 37 years. Theresa May seemed uncomfortable and ill at ease as PM, although she appears more assured as a backbencher MP.

It's actually more common than not for PMs to remain on the backbenches until the general election following their resignation in order to complete the term that their constituents elected them to complete. It is rather rare for former PMs to continue seeking re-election in later elections. However, at least 2 that I can think of, namely May and Heath, have done so.

POTUS doesn't have to be a member of the House of Representatives to be POTUS, @crazman8472. A British PM, however, has to be a member of the House of Commons. More often than not, a former PM completes his/her term as an MP after resigning as PM. Looking back over the last 50 years, I respect the ones who did so, like May, Brown, Thatcher, Callaghan, Heath, Major, and even Truss. I find it telling (since they're my least favourites) that the odd ones out are Blair, Cameron, and Johnson, who all couldn't get out of the Commons fast enough on leaving 10 Downing.

One of the peculiarities of the British Parliament is that it is actually illegal to resign as a Member of Parliament. This is why MPs use the device of an appointment to an "office of profit under the Crown", as it then disqualifies them from sitting the House. Very simply, it should not be allowed to appoint anyone to such an office if there is an investigation into misconduct of the member by an appropriate Parliamentary body. Make the MP stay in office until the matter is settled and if misconduct is found, the appropriate punishment is handed down. After that, they can quit in the normal way. The biggest problem with the current system is that it has no teeth to hold past members to account for their behaviour while in office. Yes, quitting loses them their seat but people like BJ would never want to stay as a back-bencher anyway. The ignominy of being an OPPOSITION back-bencher would be a hammer blow to the ego he is simply incapable of sustaining.

Treason is not a behaviour any country's constituents should have to tolerate from their politicians. Boris Johnson has proven himself to be a leftist, which his conservative constituents and the conservative base of the party should not have to tolerate. Undermining BREXIT and the introduction of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which undermined UK sovereignty and the UK Union is in my opinion, treasonous. IMO, both Johnson and May have undermined BREXIT and the UK Union, which is unforgivable behaviour. IMO, both Johnson and May should be permanently tossed from the Conservative Party and UK politics...

A war costing thousands of lives, and leaving the UK as a prime target for Islamist attacks. I believe it was one T Blair. Now considering Johnson has been destroyed over lies re. Partygate, a 'sin' which others were equally guilty of, wonder what punishment was meted out to the said Blair. Oh wait, sweet FA, and further, he is regularly invited to give his ' valuable' opinions across the MSM. But hey, what's a little war compared to cake eating.

@barbaracollins8572 Yes, and as I said, telling lies in Parliament is wrong. But as far as that whole bunch of cowardly, duplicitous, self-serving lot are concerned, few, if any, are not guilty of telling lies to the whole country at one time or another. Including the exaggeration of Covid, which led to lockdown in the first place. Johnson is being held up for sins most are guilty of. But, as far as many of our political class are concerned, his chief 'sin" is that of getting Brexit done.
