Tim, it’s late for this trench, but when I build a cabin with my uncle in his back yard we ran an extra empty 30 mm conduit for ethernet, cable TV or whatever low voltage you ever would want to run (by now it even could be fiberglass cable) shielded from the mains supply in the same trench where we had sewer, gas, water and electric to and from that cabin. I am still really proud of what we build then.

The same old same old isn't just the same old..... its life and you are showing us part of your life for which I am grateful. Thank you for allowing us to see just what it takes to do what your doing and boy is that a big do list! I did wonder just how things were going to go after the workshop and you haven't disappointed me, in fact you have blown me away with your grit and determination to get things done. I am too old to do any of what your doing these days but I still remember projects (much smaller) that are bits of what you have done and will do. One thing I have found is that when you pull a cable through, that is the time to pull your other rope at the same time. This way the cable and rope will lie flat alongside each other instead of coiling around each other. Thanks for posting and good luck.

If you tie a small bit of plastic to the end of a light rope (or brickie string line) Tape a hose of a decent vacuum to the other end of the conduit. The bit of plastic acts like a balloon. It creates a blockage and increases the pressure. Sucks the rope up the conduit. We use it to pull cable up inground conduits all the time. Works at least 50m.

We've had a Bio-pure treatment system running for the last 10 years - very happy with it. Make sure it's anchored in concrete as I've heard stories of them rising to the surface when ground water levels are high!

@phildxyz

@@YvetteWilliams-dx2kk Hi Yvette, we have a 5 bedroom house, although usually only three people here. I think we have a bio-pure 2 for 1-7 people. Because of the level of our old drainage field which was reused (from an old septic tank) we needed to have a pumped outlet unit. The pump did fail after about 7 years, but was easy to replace. If you can arrange gravity drainage to a drainage field or ditch, this is best, as no pump to go wrong and the only power used is for the air blower. The only noise is from the air blower - I think ours is a diaphragm unit but you can also get a piston one - I think the diaphragm one was quieter, but check with your supplier - obviously less important if it's not near the house. It's recommended to have it emptied occasionally to stop grit etc building up in it. Think Bio-pure say every three years, the people who empty it every year and our installer said not more often than every two years. That's what we do. There is no smell and we have been very pleased with it - pretty much fit and forget.

You should be looking at geothermal heating and hoping to get someone to sponsor a drill or dig up a field next to the barn. With that big slab to heat it will save you thousands in the long run.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 4 ай бұрын
Our heat demand wouldn’t really justify the install cost although we have looked into it. The UFH will be down specced as it is due to the output needing to be lower than normal.

Power, data and water ducts running everywhere you can. Ducting is cheep compaird to digging up your finished drive way in the future. Im about half way through installing about 300m of each between my old farm buildings. Also install 2 levels of waning tape about 300 and 600 down (assuming duct around 1m deep) and dont be shy about running multiple lines at each level. The warning tape is surprisingly hard to see when digging across wet ground. Just a few weeks ago a friend hit and tugged a incoming 3phase supply that he installed a few years prior even knowing approximately where it was as he installed it and was carefuling. Tape was next to invisible.

While we have a dedicated (large plate) vibrating trench compactor to put on the digger, we also have a foot that we can put on the breaker, so it can compact in smaller spaces. (bonus: On the underside of the compaction foot, we built a cup that will fit on a post, and we can use the breaker as a post-pounder.)

In terms of your futureproofing approach, Tim, I'm assuming that your electrician is keeping an eye on just how long these distribution cables are and the loads you expect to connect to them eventually. I don't know, of course, but I get the impression that some of the cable runs are quite long for the size of the cable (maybe 25 sq mm conductor, 3-phase?). Given the size of your new build and your mentioning of things like EV chargers, then voltage drop could become an issue. I'm sure you're on top of things as you usually are.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 4 ай бұрын
I think the main 3 phase cable is significantly larger than 25. That is just a supply to the cabin which will eventually just become a 10-12m length to possible car charging. Voltage has been pretty much consistent throughout the buildings so assume James knows has allowed for all that. 👍

Ow and I am not sure if you mentioned it: consider underfloor heating for the whole building, it is real stable heat. BUT if you go that route take pictures of all the loops prior to covering it all up, you will thank your self for taking the time now, whenever you start anything where you would still into your floor. Thanks for another fun video!

When laying duct limit change of direction to one sweeping curve in a single run. Pulling additional cables through an S-bend can cause damage to the cables if existing cables are twisted/the draw rope is twisted around existing cables. Also bung the ends so wildlife doesn't make themselves at home 🙂

A few external service tips: Check for derating of LV cables for below ground cable runs. Allow for LV cabling and space for an external LV diesel generator ( just in case)… Comms cabling below 90m minimum CAT 6A. Lots of cable ducting and manholes out to boundary if you can. Free drain any external manholes. Fibre cable from the boundary to your comms incomer Have (and allow for) access to drainage Roding points. VERY IMPORTANT! Label all cables at source and termination point plus inside the cable manholes. ( you will forget what they are for in a few years… guaranteed) Allow for Wired boundary security devices. CCTV. Lighting etc. Lots more I’m sure….but that’s it for now

Just been catching up with progress. When designing anything climate related e.g. storm drainage, roof loading, do not work to BS or EN standards as many were written without climate change in mind (>10yrs ago) - go above and beyond if this is your forever house. You won't regret it in the long run.

It may be too late but if you are installing EV charging it would be a good idea to take over a Cat 5 cable so that the charge point can get onto the internet for remote switching or have an external wifi point on the main building that would reach the chargers.

Modern gear, while I love it, is sometimes just a little too operator friendly. Previous to my current track loader with fingertip hydraulic controls, the loader control levers were semi-direct to the pressure circuits, and there was feedback pressure on the levers, so operating, while not strenuous, was a significant daily dose of isometric exercise. I used to have significantly more upper body strength than I do now. :)

Hello Tim. Not sure where you are but Mark Wildon of Wildon Environmental in Utoxeter is by far best drainage engineer I know. He would tell you not to go with a contentiously aerated tank system which are far cheaper to buy, because the running costs are massive in comparison to say a kleargester. I have been working as an architect for the last twenty years and this is the same advice I have given to all my clients.

Water in ducts is not really a problem for the cable itself as it is designed to be laid direct in the ground, but it may be an issue at the ends of the duct-line if water drains into buildings, of course! In the UK, electricity cable ducts installed by distributors (so, essentially Distribution Network Operators in this context) have to be sealed against ingress of fluids, including gas, by law (Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations, regulation 3(4)), so water ingress should be taken care of. There isn't an express requirement in that same regulation for such sealing of ducts which comprise part of the _consumer's_ installation but the same principles apply. These are addressed in the Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
