Once seen as the future of the Brazilian national side, and even christened The Emperor of Milan, Adriano set the world alight in a short time spanning just 3 years. The amalgam of power, pace, skill, and deadly left-foot made him completely unplayable, even feared in Italy. But, his career went on a downward spiral following a personal tragedy, rendering the Brazilian a changed man who struggled to ever find the form that dazzled the world.

For different reasons Adriano and Hulk didn't stamp their legacy in the game as they could have. It just struck me that 4 great and powerful left-foots have come out of Brazil. Hulk, Adriano, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo. There's been others, but another country with 4 hammer strike left foots, isn't springing to my mind

I disagree vehemently - Adriano was shattered by the loss of his dad. He is a person who has struggled with mental and emotional issues, as well as alcoholism. He has always said: without the real Didico (his nickname), there is no Emperor. He gave up fame and fortune to try and find happiness again. I strongly recommend the great interview done by The Player's Tribune: it is candid and mesmerizing! I hope you like it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpp9iNuSqZyxZn0.html

Dayum i swear, one of the most complete players, (Body built and the way he uses his body, speed, technical, ball control, accuracy, shot power) its a shame what happened but at-least we got a glimpse of his monster ability to do what he wanted out in that field in his prime, loved watching him play all the time.

Crazy how good he was and the impact he had yet his career was on the decline by the time he was 25. I was a teenager when he was in his prime and now that I'm 30 it really hits home for me. Sad story. He was an absolute monster in his prime. He's not even that much older than me either.

Another great video, bringing yet another player from my generation some attention. One should not underestimate the effects of a bereavement, especially that of a parent. Having recently lost my mother, i can empathise with anyone struggling to comes to terms with this traumatising, life changing event - it is not easy. I can only imagine what it must have been like for a young man who relied on his father for structure and support, only to lose him being thousands of miles away in a high pressure environment. I hope he is at peace now - or at least is able to live with the pain without it overbearing his daily ability to function.

I want to cry, at 12 years i did my first trials at Parma youth team, in a field called stuart, where the youth team still train, some of the senior team come to run there for individual training, and during the trial I saw Adriano sebaatian frey and another player, they conceed has to kick some penalties to frey and hear some advice from the players, i was just 12 but i still remembering him saying, the secret of success is to train hard and pray hard. I fucking swear i became his number 1 fan, and they even made a cassette about him, while he wad only 24 or 24 and he was talking about how his Dad wax important to him and his faith, i'm making it short. The day i heard his Dad passed away i also cried. Cause i kinda knew the impact it was going to have on him. And this video brought me back.

The Bidone d'Oro is not given for the worst Serie A player, but for the most disappointing. Players who won or were nominated for that award were generally high regarded players who did not enjoy a great season up to the standard imposed by the press. Adriano and Gilardino have been playing okay in 2005-2006 season but they were 1st and 2nd for Bidone d'Oro. Same story with Vieri a couple of times. The press in Italy and Spain sometimes has unrealistic expectations from the star players and they create this type of nonsense awards like Bidone d'Oro. It isn't meant to be taken seriously.

It shows you how crippling one's mentality can be... The loss of his father was the beginning of the end and perhaps having that metaphorical arm wrapped round him and a bit more support may have saved him... It was enough to take a young man with the ability to inherit the R9 god status and transform him into nothing more then a Brazilian gang thug... Something that boggles my mind as an Inter fan is you essentially have brought in a guy who literally is a younger R9 at your disposal (along with R9 himself) why wouldn't you just keep him and have him soak up the experience and teaching of his predecessor... 2 years of him striking up with R9 and Vieri would have done wonders for that kid (not that he particularlyneeded it)... Once his father passed the only 2 options you had (from a coaching perspective) is become the father figure he clearly still needed and be there for him or let him go back home earlier and allow him to heal... he was outstretched and outside his depth and unfortunately it ruined what should have been arguably one of the greatest of all time.

It is shameful how you describe the environment in which Adriano grew up on - the man himself describes it as a happy and healthy childhood full of love, music, sports, family and friends. These are humble and proud people who work hard for the little they have, which is a huge accomplishment. While you focused solely on "poverty and violent crime", you left out the humanity of these people. Adriano wasn't scouted as a kid - his mother sacrificed financially to pay for his admission at Flamengo's youth group. While she took on a second job, his grandma was his partner and companion commuting over 2h each way to support his dream of becoming a professional footballer. Also, his sick leave to be treated for depression and alcoholism at SPFC was paid by Inter - to this day, Adriano speaks about it with nothing but gratitude and love towards Moratti. While I'm at the subject, it is highly insulting how you referred to SPFC as a "humble club" - these guys are 3x Brasileirão, Libertadores and World Champion winners back to back. Though I am far from being a SPFC supporter, these guys have accomplished a feat that my Flamengo hasn't yet. All in all, you failed miserably at capturing the root of it all: Adriano, the beloved Didico, is a heartbroken kid who lost his father and best friend. A kid who grew up in humble beginnings and still comes back to his childhood favela regularly because he refuses to turn his back on the ones who prompted him to win. He is a human being who struggles with depression and alcoholism; he is also a loving father of 3, a devoted brother, son and grandson. He is a former professional athlete whose fans love and adore just as much as before - we have never forgotten him! Just like Magic Johnson, Didico smile lights up the room; his charisma is unmatched. Such a pity that you insisted in portraying him as a has been who threw it all away.

@@gigihabib He probably even blames himself for his father's passing and the fact that he left Brazil at such a tender age made it worse. He didn't have anyone that he could confide him because he was still a kid at heart despite his reputation as a top footballer. It's not like he left Brazil to play on Europe as a 26/27/28 year old who grew and matured into a man. He went to INTER as a teenager. That's why players like Ronaldinho, Robinho and the likes didn't fulfill their careers in Europe as they could've wanted because they were still growing up in their respective clubs across Brazil. Only the likes of Kaka are an exception who had a good head on his shoulders in terms of upbringing. Imagine you being touted as the best young player for your respective club and all of a sudden you are snapped up by a top side in Europe (barely even establishing yourself in your country).

as much as i hate today's state of football, i must admit that this problem is what agents are fixing. its ridiculous that agents are getting so much money for selling players from one club to another, but, to be honest, since agent has such a stake in a football player he is interested in keeping a player healthy, cared for and happy, as well as physically well. we have seen so many big talents losing their way despite playing for big clubs. it is clear that clubs with all their money and resource can not control the players and keep check on their individuality and mentality. so i better see agent getting 20% of the transfer money, but also a player who trusts this agent, has him as a father figure if its necessary and avoid a situation when a clearly depressed player, unhappy and drunk all the time is not cared for by his employers who have all the money and resources in the world. its popular now to read the books of former Inter players stating how they all saw what Adriano was dealing with and so on. but nobody did nothing. Moratti is praised for letting Adriano go to Brazil while he was in top form is great, but he surely could do more than that. the whole system was flawed back then, nobody cared. Adriano needed help and he could be helped, but nobody cared. everyone saw that he had problem, and no right people stepped up.

He was past his prime at 25? Obviously his hangers on just didn’t care for his well being at all. They were just there to take advantage of him as long as they could.

The strong implication this narrative makes is he was traumatized by his fathers loss and lost his drive to play at that level. But at the end we see him crossing a street with a child - his presumably. Focusing his time on his family is equally compelling reason for his loss of interest.

He was the Unicorn of strikers. He got power, pace, flair, finishing and everything you want from a striker. He was Haaland before Haaland. The perfect striker. However his fall to the earth was too quick

Usually the Brazilian decline is atteibuted to lack of discipline. But Adriano's story i was truly tragic; fuelled by depression.
