OK! I started mint from a bunch I got at Loblaws that I couldn't finish - should have done this years ago! Propagated basil from a dying plant I found the same week. Watched your sweet potato slips video last week - 2 orange sweet potatoes are laying on their sides in their own food container greenhouses on a radiator and I'm tracking progress. Now coriander seeds are getting soaked tomorrow. I'm determined to turn this Toronto studio apartment into an indoor jungle, but when it comes to plants my preferences are usually for the edible and medicinal. Only discovering now that many of these thrive indoors. Add to the list of "Things I Wish I'd Known In My Twenties". Please keep including indoor farming tips!

Thanks Sudha! Yes, that's the tricky thing with Coriander is that the seeds are so awesome for cooking, often people buy them not knowing they've been processed and rendered sterile. Just make sure to get fresh seeds and you'll be growing your own in no time! Also, they flower readily and produce tons of seeds if that's what you are after as well! :-)

I am right there with you. I also grow radishes, carrots, basils, many lettuces, and a few others indoors. Butterheads have a quick turn around time. I grow it all hydroponically so the pest problem isn't an issue either.

Hi from an American living in Italy. Thank you so much for your great instruction on growing cilantro indoors. I'm going to give it a try asap! Last year I tried seed starter trays and frankly it was a disaster. I hope your method works for me because my husband and I love the stuff! I love to cook dishes from Mexico and Indian but you are absolutely right about using it in so many dishes. Thanks again!

Thanks Paula! Once you get going with it and get a rhythm with Cilantro, you'll find it easier. Heat to germinate, room temp to grow, moderate light. DON'T over water. Start a new cycle every 3-4 weeks and never buy Cilantro again! Cheers!

I was doing most of what you said for growing and my cilantro was doing good. My dad said that I needed to keep it soaked and out in the sun (95-105 F*) they started withering and dying. I'm never listening to my dad about how to grow plants ever again. I have them back inside but I think I will do the one thing you suggested that I hadn't done... put them in a larger container to begin with. Thank you for this very informational video.

This seed viability test makes SO much sense!!! You have inspired hope in me lol I've been trying to grow cilantro in indoor hydroponic gardens. And I think I had two seeds sprout out of 12 or 20 that I planted 😩 I have thrown away 4 hydroponic pods already cuz after 2 weeks they started to mold not germinate! 🙄 (And I will probably be throwing away two more 🤦‍♀️) BECAUSE OF YOUR COACHING I just started two batches of paper towel seeds from two different suppliers and I will see which one gives me the higher germination ratio!!!. 🤓 Plus, instead of wasting pods and putting three seeds per pod and waiting two weeks to see if any sprout, within a week-ish I should have some sort of sprouting action in the two paper towel batches. Then I can move the successful sprouts into the pods!!! 💖 Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you!!!

Well, you just answered my questions. Back to the "planting board" 😆This is the weirdest herb out there- in my opinion. 2 in my house hate it- tastes like soap. But they love coriander. And then 2 love cilantro, and coriander upset's their stomach.

Right on Soraya...heat will sprout it faster and more uniform. Try placing it on top of your fridge...that's usually the warmest spot.

Hey Karen, I have a friend who swears by it in her scrambled eggs! For us, we use it in Indian Salad. So cut up all your veggies, lemon juice, salt, shredded ginger, and then cilantro. Its amazing with Tandoori Chicken, but honestly, it goes with ANY spicy dish! Chicken salad...that sounds delish! I wonder if tuna salad would be good for it too?

Light is all-important to any plant but you mentioned nothing about the light requirements when growing cilantro indoors! Seed packet says it needs "full sunlight" if planted outdoors, so how does one supply enough light indoors? Do you put it next to a brightly-lit window all day, or will it do okay with moderate light? I have a west-facing kitchen window that gets about 4-5 daily hours of afternoon sunlight, don't think that's going to be enough. Can you use a grow light successfully for cilantro if you don't have any bright windows?

I love your videos! I'm a total newbie to growing and I live in some of the harshest conditions - South Texas heat, but north-facing apartment (NO direct sun ever!), postage-stamp-size deck, tiny stuffed apartment lol. So I was excited to see cilantro on the list of herbs that could be grown in shade because they'll tolerate it. Never heard of the heat source you use to germinate your seeds though? What's that? :) Thank you so much!!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
That IS a tough place to grow! For sure though, take advantage of pairing up the plants with spaces they can utilize. Even grow indoors, like this Cilantro here, as well as Basil and Oregano! For my heat source, I just use a heat mat. You can use one designed for seeds, or even the ones for pet reptiles...same technology!

There's some great information in this video. I'm confused about soil temperature. Why do all my seed packets suggest planting when there's frost or at least cold weather?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Your Cilantro seed packets say that? Some plants for sure can be planted in colder ground (beets, carrots, peas)....but not Cilantro. It won't germinate.
