MTB Freeride rider Matt Macduff sustained a terrible fall attempting to make his way around the Loop Of Doom. After over 3 year of research, determination and hard work, Matt managed to find everything he needed to make it happen on his mountain bike.
Built in a month at the Garden Route Trail Park in South Africa, the gigantic structure rises up to 40 ft. in the sky. The MTB crash left him with 10 fractures in his right wrist and 3 fractures in his right ankle. The story behind his stunt is as impactful as the structure itself. A real story of determination. After spending a week in a South African hospital, Matt is now home in Ontario, working on his rehabilitation to get back on his Mountain Bike. Just as he started to walk again, we catched up with him to get his version of this incredible story.
In previous posts about the Loop of Doom, there was a lot of interrogations from the readers so we did our best to cover all the aspects of the project. Keep on reading to take a journey through the mind of a young man determined to leave an impact in the MTB Freeride world.

I remember in high school physics learning about how for a rolling object to complete a loop with no friction (and no pedaling), the hill would need to be about 2.5 times the radius of the loop. That structure seems to barely meet that threshold at best. Someone needs a lesson in safety factors.

He did an interview and said that he fell because of the g force he experienced and it turned his bars sideways and shot him out. If he stayed in the center the whole way he would have made it but instead that happebed

I am not sure about this but I believe that because it is an ellipse and not a perfect loop, less speed is required.

actually, no. That might be the theory but in this case it's not like that. If you check closely, he would've done the loop perfectly if he didn't turn his bars. Probably too much force caused him to accidentally turn.

Need a Physicist! The kinetic energy at the bottom of the loop must be greater than the potential energy at the top of the loop. High school physics. They should have measured the speed of the bike at the bottom of the loop, on a dry run, before actually taking the loop path. Make sure you have a margin of error for the drag at speed when doing the loop. Experimental physics. He never had a chance. Do bicycle stunt riders take physics in high school?

I think it needs to have a constant radius. The way they have it designed they're basically creating a ballistic trajectory, and that won't work to get to the other side. Another way to think about it is to turn it upside down - which would make it like dropping into a ramp. Effectively speaking from a physics point of view it's the same thing. You wouldn't build a ramp with a transition like that, you might be able to ride it but it would be tricky - it'd want to slam you at the bottom, but most importantly make you swap speed for g force - making it harder to go up the other side, but in this case the speed going away means gravity wins. Rebuild it with a constant radius.

Do some research. There is a reason why this loop, and roller coaster loops, take this shape. It is the best shape for limiting the g-forces. A circle would give ridiculous forces at the start, little at the top, and a lot at the end. This shape provides more even acceleration. Matt just went too fast.

I'd say he went too slowly because he fell off at the top. Had he been going faster he'd have stuck better to the ramp. When I first saw the shape...I said 'no way he's making that'. Very steep up kills all the momentum which then let him fall straight down. Would have been better to be lower and get him over the top sooner so to speak. With powered machines...like airplanes...you have to really watch the speeds to pull a good loop, but a gravity machine is totally different. If he tries again someday...let's hope he has more knowledgeable people to advise him.

Probably because bikes don't have speedometers and being the first guy to EVER attempt this loop, it all comes down to guess work because of that. It's all about feel and nerves are one hell of a blinding factor for this feel when you're trying something for the first time.

Centripetal force is exactly what I'm talking about, and it is just like a roller coaster. Build a model and see for yourself. Just roll balls around it and see which has a less painful g-force. Read Matt's interview on the Rise to learn more about his take on speed/his mistake. I'm out of this convo. Go out and ride bikes kids.

Only way to complete that loop would be on a motorcycle, so you can hit the gas while in the loop. I can't figure out how they couldn't calculate that in advance of the attempt.
