I am old school Gorilla proof Military and I like the sea to summit camp plus self-inflating foam sleeping mat. Its Reasonably quiet but heavy and large but I Don't count grams. I just go slower and at 60+ with 50 years experience its not a race. I enjoy the outdoors I want to be reasonable comfortable and when i get tired I may camp as I was the mss sleeping system and a tarp so spots are easy to find A long way a Inexpensive hammock. Life is good just get out there and have fun and be safe! Pack light freeze at night, or pay the $$$$$$$ and travel Greater distances! It's all good there is no one correct way enjoy. Ps The reflective insulated sleeping pads just don't keep me warm Any brand I've tried So Self inflating foam is way to go for me it works. And if my body is happy on happy You don't wanna see me as a 🐻 Without a good night sleep In the woods. 😂😆😂😆😂 but its true for me 🤗🤗

Totally agree: pump sack and valve are far better for Sea To Summit (Comfort Plus regular) than Thermarest (Neo Air Xlite RW); same about noise, but as I use earplugs, this point may be more annoying for others; and I feel that StS is more comfortable. But when it comes to weight and pack size, even with Thermarest in wide version, this one is a clear winner. R factor is also on its side, but as both have good values, it is not a major criteria for me. When I want (or need) to spare weight, I go for the Thermarest, and otherwise, StS is choosen. Both are expensive but I think that nobody can make a mistake choosing one or the other.

Thanks for this. I was trying to decide between these two. The Thermarest is very hard to find in the wide version and probably because of the R value, but that Sea to Summit is highly rated for comfort and the large version is available. I'm sure increasing the R value with either a good bivy or something like you suggested would be fine in winter with the right sleeping bag...or two.

Good call. If you use a sleeping bag the Sea to Summit with a under foam will tackle just about anything. I have a Thermarest ‘Z’ fold mat and used in conjunction it’s a warm combination. I also recently got a very thin foam mat (I use it as my rucksack back padding) and that works well too

This was such a good review and so much insight given!!!!!!!!!! I'm about to buy the STS mattress and I was actually considering the therm-a-rest after seeing the underlying tip it was clear. STS for me with an underlay mat from Quechua which weighs under 100g. Thank you good Sir! +1 Sub!

Yes - agree. For me, it's the most comfortable mat ever. I fold the sides in lengthways to meet in the middle and then fold on itself. Then roll towards the valve (hope that made sense)

Super expert tip is to tighten the drawsting on the Thermarests pumpsack about 3/4 (or 75% for all yall mathdudes out there) to minimize the air escaping when blowing up your pad.. Nothing big, just a SUPER EXPERT TIP!

great detailed review. i have gone for the Sea to Summit.. i got it for £135 from GO Outdoors the difference in price finalised it for me, the Thermarest is still at £190 with over £50 difference its a no go for me. What weather are you camping in to require that level of ground insulation? I am only just changing up from a thermarest prolite with a published R of 2.4 and cold from the floor has never been an issue, as you say i must be like your brother. I have only graded to have a more comfortable sleeping mat and thicker, as i am not as young as i was :-)

The S2S is a great sleeping mat. You’ll love it. I use the Thermarest during the winter. I use a quilt so there’s no thermal insulation underneath . Only from the sleeping mat. So the high R rating from the mat helps to keep me warm.

Hi, just a quick correction, the sea to summit comfort plus has a comfort rating value.. R 5, that's what it claims on the package.
@ds7221
@ds7221 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Thanks for the comment. On the Sea to Summit website it shows R value as 4.0. Clearly they can’t get their numbers right! Conclusion though is if it’s not being used in coldest winter the Sea to Summit is my go to mat due to comfort. In coldest winter it’s the Thermarest because of its near 9 R value. I use a quilt so mat warmth is very important to me.

A new measuring scale has been introduced lately in order to make comparison between brands more reliable (like we know it from the en on sleeping bags) - and therefore most companies have had to retest their sleeping pads resulting in new ratings. Cheers

Hi Tom, yes ... the Xtherm is purely a cold weather pad. For warmer times it'll be either the Sea to Summit (R=4 ) or Nemo Tensor (R=1.6).

I use mine with a quilt so have not experienced that. The problem I had was that the inflatable pillow kept pinging off the damn thing until I fastened it down with a tee shirt. I’ve seen people put beads of grippy silicone on their mats to help overcome the sliding off.

I'm buying a pop up camper this week and am planning a 14 day trip in mid to late November on the Canadian border. The camper comes with a heated mattress but I don't know how warm that will get and I am always cold. Should I buy one of those sleeping pads that are rated 4 or above and put it on top of the heated mattress or would that not be effective? Are these pads meant only for tent camping? Would the warmth from the heated mattress heat the camping pad all the way through so that I feel it in my sleeping bag? Temps are supposed to be in the 20's but I want to be prepared for worst case. Note that I am always cold.
@ds7221
@ds7221 2 жыл бұрын
The Sea to Summit is very comfortable and amazingly warm. Together with a heated mattress you will melt the ice caps! I use mine for overflow guests at my house. They are very versatile and can be used outside of camping. If your heated mattress goes too hot then it might damage it. But it would have to be very hot.

I had a brief look at the Xped mattresses. They have good R value, weight and price. To be honest, I looked at a boat load of reviews and in particular people's personal feedback on KZfaq and short listed Sea to Summit and Thermorest. I'm very happy with both. In the end it comes down to personal preference. I have a quilt and am a cold sleeper that's why the 8.9 R rating of the Thermorest was the clincher. Thanks.

Many thanks for your reply , I had an exped for 10 years and used it on climbs up to 6000m and it’s just sprung a leak and nowadays they have the better blow up systems as opposed to hand pumping which takes a while and was looking at that thermarest which is much lighter than exped but as you said personal preferences, many thanks

Do you think I could use the sea to summit one for winter in Scotland? The exped is £180 and the s2s is £162 so not much in it. As those are the two which I've been considering

Yes - for sure as long as you’re using a sleeping bag. I was cold using the Sea to Summit with a quilt mid winter camping in Dartmoor. For winter using my quilt I need the full on 6.9R of the Thermarest. That said, I know people who are naturally very warm sleepers and the Sea to summit would be fine even using a quilt. Sorry for the rubbish answer but it depends

Nope. Would be interested to hear a review on it from anyone out there. With an R value of 4.4, for me in the UK this would be a late spring, summer and early autumn as I use a quilt. It’s around the same weight as my Sea to Summit Comfort Plus Insulated Mat which I can’t recommend highly enough. But as always, ‘horse’s for courses’.
