This is by far the best explanation on thermostat wiring I’ve seen. Thank you. We moved into a house with two systems and two Ecobee smart thermostats and one of them let me know there was no C-wire. Now I know it’s not an issue because of the power extender they’d installed. Thanks again.

I installed an ecobee 3 in my house 5 years ago and have been very happy with it. Yes, this thermostat is a very ingenious design not just because they accommodate the c-wire out of the box.

Great video .. Any experience with systems that have a zone board that links to 2 thermostats but has no G (Fan) wire at the thermostat? The G wire seems to go to a control thermostat… I have 2 nest thermostats working perfectly with c, rh, w1, y1… I have a Lennox harmony 2 board …

Hi Mr. Handy Dad - this is actually the wife of Handy (but extremely ... frugal lol) Wayne and yes we do currently have the original thermo (Mercury, heat only)) And I say currently, in this 1940 NY home. We have remodeled some of it, and one thing I can say is, they REALLY built solid walls-ie. not some of the current sheet rock you could pretty much kick through, no, we had layers of cement, wire netting, more cement - idk the terms - but it took lonnng sessions w the sledge hammers etc to break thru. I installed 2 ecobee 3 lite in a 2 zone home with one unit. On my zone control board it only allowed a green wire in one of the ports. One of my ecobee started right up the other one did not because there was no connection for the green wire on the zone control board. It was a Bryant zone perfect 2 zone. Not sure how to wire.

I ended up just hiring out my install of my ecobee. There was too many extra wires in there that I didn't want to mess with. They said that there was a thermostat in the basement. It was very confusing as those wires led above my bathroom down there and to an exterior wall lol.

Unless you own a Lennox HVAC system. They use a proprietary four-wire data bus for all communications and programmability. Their thermostats that are Wi-Fi capable range between four and $800 and you cannot buy them directly. You have to buy them through a dealer. You can change the system by moving some jumpers on the HVAC system and then running seven or eight wires to a regular thermostat, but then you lose all the special programmability. For instance, from my thermostat I can control the fan speeds and other features directly, as well as configure percentage of humidity. I found this useful in my home, since the HVAC system is on the opposite end of the house as the bedrooms. Plus with older homes, the ducts leak like a sieve. My current Wi-Fi thermostat I was able to find on eBay for a couple hundred bucks. However, I have to keep an old wireless router on hand because it will not work with newer routers. A more modern thermostat is available from Lennox, but you're going to pay between $400 and $800 depending on the model. I wish these were things I knew when I bought the system 10 years ago.

How do you wire 3 wire thermostat adding a condenser into ecobee 4? Is it possible?

I picked the Ecobee, over others like Nest, because of the remote sensors. I'm guessing that'll be in the next video, too. (Strange KZfaq behavior. This video didn't show up in my Recommended list under the evening on the 2nd. Don't know why it took two days.)
