Thank you for taking the time to explain some of the basics of thermostats to help the DIYs out there. It would also help to explain that there are small relays in the thermostats that have contacts that can fail after so many repeated cycles of make - break and quite often the cause of the problems discussed that arise over time. Also explaining that the Letter Designations on the terminals correspond to the color of the wire used though that is not always a given in each and every installation. Cheers, Victor

I watched a few other do-it-yourself thermostat replacement videos but I was left even more dumbfounded than when I first took on this project. Then I played yours and all my questions and concerns were thoroughly addressed. The fact that you took the time and explained not only what wire goes where, but what the function of each wire was, made the whole project crystal clear. And you were the only one to explain why RH and RC should be jumped. Now I'm off to kill the breakers and do the swap. Wish me luck! I'm going in! OK. Project finished! I was a little concerned when the A/C didn't fire up right away, but maybe it just needed a minute or two to acclimate. Now it's working great! All I have left to do is to set the program. That should be simple enough. Thanks for all your help!

Some of the relays have timers in them to protect the components. On heat side they keep the fan running as the heat coils cool off. On compressor side they keep it off so the freon liquid can disperse from the compressor so it doesn't lock up.

David, thank you so much for a very detailed and informative video. I am a DIYer and a friend thinks their thermostat is bad. I am about to go and check it tomorrow and I would typically look for a wire that may have popped out or a bad thermostat cover that may have not engaged (snapped) back on to the base properly, as she removed it and changed the batteries. I hope she put the batteries in correctly ! Thanks again !! Well done.

Thanks. Watched a dozen videos that didn't help before finding this one. Turned out my thermostat was bad--only way I realized it was by twisting the control wires together as you suggested. I had thought it would be something else because the thermostat is only ~2 years old. Not thrilled with Honeywell, but very grateful to you for posting this video.

Thanks! I just replaced my old round Honeywell with a new programable thermostat. On my old Thermostat the Blue wire was placed on the Y terminal. When I wired up the new one I put the Blue on the B terminal. No wonder my AC compressor didn't come on. I didn't have a Yellow wire and had no idea that I was leaving the AC compressor with no control wire. Your video showed me just what I needed and taught me a lot. Now the blue wire is back on the new Y terminal and everything is working fine. I don't need a common wire? Thanks again.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. I need to install the new generation thermostats that works with ATT. this is up here in NY, if the c wire is not present, can I draw the 24 volts from the rh by pulling a jumper to the c so the thermostat gets powered? Also is there another way to test the thermostat? I have tried 2 of them and neither went on for some reason although I had 24 volts at both the rh and the c

I needed to replace my thermostat but could not access the electrical panel to turn off the power. I was worried about getting a shock and could not find a proper answer. This video clearly showed that you won't get a shock from 24v ( just don't let the other wires touch the Blue wire). Also finally learned what each wire does

Last Fall my AC compressor was coming on when the heat would turn on. I had turned the circuit breaker off for the AC so I could troubleshoot it in the spring. Now that it is spring, with the AC power turned back on, the AC will not turn on. Both the blower fan motor and the compressor are not coming on in AC mode. The heat is working normally. I do also have the thermostat set in the HOLD mode so I could rule out a program error/issue with the thermostat. Any ideas. Thanks and very detailed video. I gave you a sub too.

Thanks for this, between your video and another website reference.. I was able to gain the understanding of the system at the thermostat wiring level well enough to navigate my issue. I attempted to get my local HVAC technician to handle this matter initially, but his quote and subsequent rate was laughably ridiculous to me. I specified that my issue was: 1-2 wires being moved into a different terminal, a process that takes less than 2 minutes to resolve (excluding travel time) with a basic knowledge of those standards and a small flat-head screw driver. I look to empower local businesses and professional trades, but its ridiculous quotes and rates like that that turns home owners into do-it-yourselfers. It's pretty gratifying to solve my issue and 'save' $90 in 2 minutes of effort beyond the time it took to watch this video and read a couple paragraphs on a resource site, but I can't help but feel disappointed that I can't just delegate the matter to an individual who embodies and/or represents the industry without these obnoxious value of time and service, cost consideration. I mean, I feel at odds about the whole state of affair in these interactions.

Excellent video. When I connect the Red wire to the Compressor wire, both furnace fan (the fan beside the furnace in the basement) and the outdoor AC fan run. But when I connect the Red wire to the Fan wire (green), only the furnace fan runs. I want to have the AC on, so I left the Red wire being connected to the Compressor wire. Is that how it is supposed to be? I thought for AC only the AC fan outside the house should be running.
