It was nice to see you taking the time to seal-off the wall opening for the thermostat wires to temper inner wall air movement that might adulterate the performance of the thermistor. Also, I have the Honeywell RTH9585WF1004 and the .5 degree temp swing is murder on my heat pump with 5 minutes between cycles. Bought a LuxPro to replace it with adj swing. Thank you for all your insight!!!

When I mount thermostats, especially new wire thermostat installations, I always try to tuck the access wire into the wall, and preserve it. I still wire everything neat, there isn't a nest of wires in the thermostat, but in several years, when a new thermostat needs to be installed, theres an extra 3-4 inches in the wall. You're welcome.

I had a company replace my thermostats with programmable ones while they were replacing my boiler (HW baseboard). I eventually found they had wired the thermostats correctly, but had not set them up correctly at all - there are settings to take away the cooling mode (no central air) and settings specific to hydronic heating, presumably since temperature swings are slower than with forced air. I set it up correctly and the house was much more comfortable.

heatpumps are great and super efficient aside from the aux heat use/capacity loss in cold weather - if you put in gas i hope it's dual fuel, keep the heatpump for mild weather.

Evidently the first "tech" just did enough to get cooling going. Didn't need heat yet. I replaced the thermostats at my church with Honeywell wifi models. It reduced heating and cooling costs by 40%. By the way I retired from Trane as a Manufacturing technician for 32 years. I designed and built run test equipment for both split systems and package units.

Somebody probably got confused when they changed outdoor unit. Rheem energizes RV in heat while all other manufactures energize the RV in cooling. Also the Rheem air handlers use purple and brown for 2nd stage heat and W/W1 can confuse you if you dont follow the schematic, which isnt always readable on old units so you may have to trace the wires!

That thermostat is the new version of the "Wifi 9000". I have the 1st gen version and like it. The touchscreen is not capacitive like a cellphone, it's an older style resistive touchscreen so you need to be very "deliberate" about what you press and how hard. Looks like a good de-hacking job!

Where I live it costs $150 just to have someone do a diagnosis. Any repair is extra. The mark up on parts is ridiculous. A $100 Taco zone circulator pump installed is $700 with the diagnostic fee. Ever since then I keep a supply of spare parts and I only call someone if I can't fix it. The next time a pump went, I have 5, it cost me $100 for the pump and a couple of bolts and nuts. This is a problem the industry created on its own. Honeywell is only responding to a need.

Kind of funny, but in some neighborhoods in Texas, everyone is looking to go TO a heat pump. The reason is the housing developments are making sweetheart deals with utility suppliers. Those middle men are jacking up the price. On gas and or propane especially. High SEER heat pumps are cheaper to run, even with the electric heat strips.

I installed my own ecobee 3 several years ago. Color coded real easy. Seperate connection plate that the head until plugged into. Just had to go downstairs and write down what each wire ran to. My house was built in 1979, and not the original owner so going into any wall is seriously dangerous.😂. Luckily my wire bundle wasn’t previously hacked. It’s worth paying the 75 bucks more to get the ecobee over that one anyhow.

I bet that quote includes the thermostat that has a screen that works right! I do notice that most of the products released since Resideo took over the Honeywell stuff have comparatively lousy documentation that lacks proper details and specifications. I think that particular thermostat with the screen that doesn't respond right to touch is begging for a target practice session!

Yep when you see a thermostat hanging by the wires you know, damn rookies, and I'm not talking about you. The electric heat isn't quite wired right in the air handler. White from the thermostat should go to White on the air handler for heat . The purple is wired into a evaporator freeze sensor , that is supposedly to turn on the heat to thaw out a frozen evaporator . which doesn't work anyway . Really he's got heat, up the wazoo. I used to wire the purple into the condenser circuit to open a condenser circuit if it froze up. The freeze sensor opens when it gets cold. Don't you hate working on heat when it's cold out. Can you imagine living up North. I'm in South Florida and it's been cold. I certainly enjoy watching .

Since you share your knowledge. Here are some your way. CA glue and activator. If you run into sheetrock that is falling apart. Apply soak the sheetrock with the thin ca glue and hit it with an activator. The sheetrock will become hard to hold in wall fasteners. Works super great with towel bars in bathrooms.

I would install the gas furnace and keep the heat pump set up as dual fuel. Above 40 degrees outside, the heat pump provides heat. Under 40, the heat pump locks out and the furnace kicks in. I have that setup in my own house. Cheaper to run than straight furnace.

So even though orange was wire nutted to yellow and the thermostat called blue, yellow, and green in heat and blue was capped off outside, outside orange was obviously hooked up to the solenoid so everytime y called it was sending power to solenoid too because y&o were wire nutted, reversing valve still should have been energized even though the wiring is a bit screwed up. So it may be that, or is it energized in cool even though it's RUUD because they were tied together outside and solenoid worked?

This buyer must have had a poor real estate agent helping him along. All of that should have caught prior to closing escrow. Maybe they did and he got credit and opted to fix things on his own but you would think the safety factors would have been asked for the seller to have corrected before they took possession of the house. Boy, they have enough leaves in the yard ! I'd get another thermostat too, that one is very nonresponsive to touch. If he goes with a new system then all will get replaced I'd presume.
