Chromosome 17 - A strange sense of smell

Do you trust your sense of smell? We usually consider our senses to be relatively reliable and would expect a certain substance to smell the same to different people. Thanks to small genetic variations in a gene called OR7D4 on chromosome 17, however, something which smells like flowers to one person might smell like stale sweat or urine to someone else. As Aoife McLysaght from Trinity College Dublin explains, this is yet another example of how tiny changes in our DNA can alter the way we look or perceive the world.

Hi folks, we'd like to flag a silly mistake we made - the OR7D4 gene is actually found on Chromosome 19 and not 17! We're very sorry for the error and we'll re-post a corrected edit of this piece soon. Everything else in the video remains accurate.

Sorry about the mistaken chromosome. I'm terribly embarrassed. Must have noted it down incorrectly at some point and didn't double check. Or7d4 is on chr 19. Thanks to Duncan Hull for spotting this.

Gain detergent has a back scent of ammonia and Aqua Di Gioia has a back scent of rubbing alcohol. I did not smell anything like this when I smoked.

Do people who find this pleasant also find sweaty people smell good or do other things in human sweat mask it?

Neurofibromatosis type1 (Nf1) is also on an area of Ch17. Its on quite a big area of that chromosome. People with Nf1 can be effected in different ways from each other

Its wired that secretion of this pheromone not coded by sex-chromosome and affects perseption of both male and female.

They did not say it was related to whether one secretes the pheromone in their sweat. It only affects how one perceives it.

Jason Wilkins Wiki said that this secret can be found in urine and sweat of both genders. So gen coding secretion must also not be in sex-chromosome. (I'm not sure what did you want to counter by your coment)
