The map at 11:18 is very wierdly drawn since the borders do not correspond at all to the powers that be at the time. I don't know if the division between yellow and dark green is meant to signify something else but if it is Christian vs Muslims holdings then it's completely wrong. The Crusader state isn't visible, the Sultanate of Rum held central Anatolia, the Norman Kingdom of Sicily held all of Sicily, southern Italy as well as all of Tunisia and parts of Libya at the time, and in Iberia, the Christian holdings where much larger and the Almoravids were confined to the southern parts.

the narrator is obviously southern US, and sounds like a student. Think of how the common pronunciations of Iraq and Iran deteriorated into "Eye-rack" and "Eye-Ran" since the Us invasions of Western/Central Asia in 2001-03. These people are cracked, Pablo, as fundamentalist as Daesh/ISIL. They managed to induce chaos in the USA itself, bringing the world its most demented narcissistic and senile power- (and cat-) grabber of modern times.

They should've developed a homesteader strategy to attract more people ;D how would that have looked liked in Medieval Europe, like creating many, many baronies? (and they probably already did that right?) why not integrate the local greeks / arabs into the crusader armies? at least for infantry. And i think the key for their loss was not controlling Aleppo and Damascus, not really reconquering or extending control over all of "roman syria". To have some strategic depth and no hostile bases near them.
@ThersitestheHistorian
@ThersitestheHistorian 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of modern scholars have pointed out the need to control Damascus and Aleppo, which would add depth to the defense and also deprive local Muslim forces of a strategic forward operating area.

@@ThersitestheHistorian Damascus and Aleppo first, and then take Egypt, which was a sound plan as well, its really crazy how much history would have changed if the Eastern Romans had had one good general at their disposal to lead the conquest of Egypt, together with the Kingdom of Jerusalem, it was the best chance they got. With Egypt in christian hands, i can't see the rest of northern Africa being able to resist "reconquest" from other crusaders, maybe fore a few centuries but it would've been a loosing battle and no navy in the hands of a muslim power anywhere to help them. Ofc nothing is guaranteed in history, but it would have been a crazy situation with a sort of return to the ancient Roman - Persian borders just with a smattering of Catholic kingdoms in Africa and the Levant and the Eastern Roman empire able to focus fully on retaking Anatolia. Or maybe there would have been too much infighting and in the end everything would've been lost again and history would overall not have change at all. ;D

Dear Thersites, I thank you for your interesting videos, specially those about Byzantium, the (forgotten) empire. On the Iberian issue, I have to say that I completely disagree with your exposition. Remember Abu Amir Almanzor, more than 50 campaigns and raids on Christian territories on the whole peninsula at the end of X century. Even before him Abderraman III instaured the andalusi Caliphate in which the «mozarabes» Christians in muslim territory started migrating north because of reliogious prosecution during part of the reign of this powerful Caliph. They brought with them culture and the idea of religious fighting. When the Almoravids invaded the Iberian peninsula at the end of XI century, the Cid realigned with the rest of Christian rulers to defend against the armies of Yusuf ibn Tashfin, as the North African wave threatened to reach the Pyrenees again. Surely you know the muslim petty king of Seville called these newly converted to Islam, and therefore fanatics, in order to avoid being subjects to Christians and muslims in all Al Andalus were happy, although later they regretted their support for the Almoravids were rigorists who tried to end «corruption» of the apostates. Of course there were political and economic reasons behind the behavior of Christian rulers, but the situation reached dramatic levels of being overrun in several situations. Thanks for your amazing work, I just wanted to point this. Creerás.

The most interesting part of the second crusade was by far Eleanor of Aquitaine. She discovered her husband Louis the 7th was an utter bore and did what almost no woman had done, either by accompanying her husband on crusade or subsequently having the pope annul her marriage. If she hadn't done either of these things, the third would not have been called the Kings crusade because she would never have run off and married the younger Henry 2nd of England and Richard the Lionheart would not have existed. She was utterly more fascinating than all of this, and yet as often with this period of history almost never mentioned. Her court is said to have given the world "courtly love" and chivalry, she played match maker to the aristocratic families of Europe and especially England, her father was a well know troubadour, who's wickedly smutty poetry and music can still be heard or read, and as such raised his daughter as was customary any man of the time, albiet in a more bohemian court. Which incidently had 200 Iberian dancing girls who were spoils from the 1st crusade. She had more land and wealth and wit than either of her husbands who were both Kings, she was educated, intelligent, an excellent falconer and horse rider, lead armies and was regent of England for years as Richard rarely stepped foot in England, and it is rumoured the 300 women in battle armour that accompanied her are where the myths of the "Amazons" came from. She was so much more than just queen consort. She deserves her rightful place amongst her peers AND the men of the period and most definitely deserves a mention in the second crusade. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's called self-defence which the crusades were - a response to Muslim aggression.

"Cappuccino" is the diminutive form of cappuccio in Italian, meaning "hood" or something that covers the head, thus cappuccino literally means "small capuchin". ... "The Capuchins were also renowned for their dress. They wear a simple brown robe that includes a long, pointed hood that hangs down the back. The Italian word for this distinctive hood, cappuccio, gave rise to the Italian name for the order. It also gave rise to the Italian word for a friar of the Capuchin order used in the excerpt above: cappuccino. The frothed milk is likened to a little cap on the coffee, hence a cappuccino

exiting story telling and well performed but about the Wendish crusades " there where no kings to my knowledge" while showing a picture of the King of Denmark, Valdemar the Great after he conqurered the Wends?? a series of Danish viking and crusader kings went on crusade in Baltikum, even the Danish Banner, the "Dannebrog" fell from the sky in Wendland. And it was NOT about Christian fanatics wanting to "go and kill someone". The Wendish pagan tribes had attacked Danish coastlines for years, and the Danish dragonfleets went on a holy expedition to finally stop dem.

Love your content, but I disagree with your take on "holy wars in Iberia". It was a holy war since the beginning, for muslims it was a holy war, and for christians too. Look up Almanzor attacking what today is Galicia. He was seen as a paladin of Islam and took the bell from the Cathedral to humilliate the Christians. Many people became martyrs for refusing to convert to Islam.

@TheSlot1942 You´re right, but when I see mainstream content made by Americans for Americans about world history or Ancient/Medieval times, something irkes me as not right, tabloid sensationalism, light content with a desire not to engage in concepts or the whole picture... is a bunch of things not mistaken completely, but as a whole tends to misrepresent. Not in a bad light, just a bit off. Probably also happens the other way around (and it does) but there´s a lot more to talk about the Old World in terms of history and such.

@TheSlot1942 I understand and share everything you said in a broad sense, or maybe not so broad. ;) By the way your wording ( student of the past, both distant and recent) reminded me of late author Gene Wolfe whose "sci-fi" novels surpass that label and delve around some questions you mentioned. An excellent reading if you allow me to recommend anything. if you want to go not shallow but deep. There you have a good example of someone learned and well-versed in Greek tradition etc... Apologies for the off-topic, and keep on your task, there are more people on that quest that we sometimes think!

@TheSlot1942 It´s never late in regards to Tolkien´s works. You´ll see the resemblance of Gondor with the Byzantine Empire, etc. Well this man Gene Wolfe got to write some letter to Tolkien in his time, and was answered. He´s a Catholic ,but in his novels a disturbing one. But how he intertwines old myths with historical record to weave a masterpiece of resonance and full of obscure words of greek or latin origin to recreate a Salvation for Humankind only a bit more mundane than the Christian one. Aaand all of this to tell you to read The Book of the New Sun, a first person POV of a young torturer telling how he ascended to be the Autarch in Earth so old that the Sun is fading... Apollogies again for the Off Topic, have good reads, what better thing can I wish for you? :D
