THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

I think this episode would've been better if we were introduced to Captain Nemesis much earlier. I don't mean have him be the focus like in this episode, but rather do something similar to Jonas Venture: have him be built up or talked about in the background as this amazing man that our hero admires, only for him to be revealed as a scumbag. It would've been a lot more impactful, since we would've been just as shocked as Ben. Especially since the pain of finding out the person you admired for so long is actually a horrible human being is something most of us can relate to. Ben even says that he has a poster of him on his wall, but we never saw that poster. If they wanted to make a "don't meet your heroes" episode, it would've made more sense if the villain was the creator of the Sumo Slammers franchise.

Yeah it would've been nice to hear at least a mention of other heros Ben likes. We hear alot about Ben's love for Sumo Slammers throughout the series. Why couldn't they do the same with the other hero's

At the time of this episode, I was like "Other Earth superheroes exist? And Captain Nemesis is famous?" And "With a name like that, he's clearly a villain." Ben and Jennifer Nocturne, one of the first times in the show that husband and wife, Yuri and Tara Platt, get to work together.

I'm genuenly suprised they never tried to do this storyline for Sumo Slammers. Its one of the things Ben has been consistently depicted to genuenly like, so it would have been cool if the creator of the franchise or smth showed up and tried to use Ben's love for it as a publicity stunt only for it to spiral out of control somehow

Seeing the video game sumo slammers world again would’ve been nice. Heck, imagine they went to what seem like an altuniverse where the sumo slammers series was real: but it turns out to be all either robots or a magic illusion and ben has to break it to his hero he’s not real JL black mercy style.

One thing that sticks with me that episode that i love is hearing Goop calling Julie "She's my girl" cause the voice make it sound so cute and I love seeing Goop, especially when used in fun new ways like cushioning her fall

I think this episode should at least get a 1 or 2 in importance, considering this is the introduction of Captain Nemesis and Jen who appear all the way till Omniverse. Plus as Kuro mentioned, the episode touches on how normal criminals have access to high powered tech, and Harangue’s development as a sub “villain”

I remember when rewatching UAF, I also realized that Jetray, Swampfire, Humongousaur we're over used. It would have been cool to see Ben use Stinkfly and Heatblast like how they used Four Arms more often rather than Humongousaur since the fill similar roles

One thing that this episode brings is the depiction of hero syndrome. Captain Nemisis has such a sever obsession with being recognized as a hero that he put many people in harm like Julie and Jennifer (twice), hire criminals with his weapons to stage events and even brought the robots from another dimension to reek havoc just so he can stop them.

I really wish that this episode was between Andreas’ Fault & Fused because watching this in a binge kinda kills the momentum after having Agreggor succeed in catching all of the 5. Plus the only andromeda aliens shown in this episode are Armodrillo and Water Hazard so it would make sense timeline-wise

This has always been one of my most rewatched episodes of the whole franchise. Its definitely not one of the best episodes( not to say it’s bad, there are just way better ones), but it’s so fun to watch. Kinda hoping this one was gonna get a full review, but I can see why not.

I might remember things wrong, but I liked how, Early in the episode, Julie correctly guessed she didn't have to worry about Jennifer , because she knew Ben would be more Focused on Captain Nemeses (which did happen) Irónically, she still grew a jealous as the episode continued

I wish Captain Nemesis/Overlord had more character and powers, especially when he had access to tech that opens the portal to Dimension 12 and the remains of Computron. Heck, Will can even give data scan of Ben's aliens and include the Stalker arsenal into Overlord. It's a wasted potential, even in Omniverse as he got upgraded through Billion technology, which it's baffling.

This was the first episode of ultimate alien I saw as a kid. I didn’t even know this was a new series so when I saw Humongasaur becoming a new green turtle like alien I was so confused.

Always really enjoyed this episode. Kevin is hilarious, there's some really cool fight scenes and I actually think Carl is a pretty interesting character. But Julie and Ben's relationship is...kinda already fucked at this point. Like after being legitimately pissed at him at the end of Duped, there's like...absolutely no consequences or development after that. She's just...mildly peeved at him for the whole Jennifer Nocturne situation. Although their interactions at the end are very nice. The final fight scene is awesome though, Ben just going straight for Ultimate Humongousaur with no hesitation, not even shouting his name out for once really sets the tone, especially with him just blasting at Nemesis without even saying a word, no quips, no jokes, nothing. Shows Ben really can be 100% serious when he means to. Love the use of Water Hazard too, such a shame that's the only time we ever see him use that moisture absorption ability, it's such a unique power to have. The final speech hits pretty hard too, despite it not exactly being new for Ben, it fits well within the context of his newfound fame. His rage could also stem in part from him seeing Nemesis as a representation of what he could potentially turn to himself if he lets his power, fame and ego go to his head much further. Overall, a very enjoyable watch

I didn't like that episode. Don't get me wrong, I like how dark it was but I didn't like how weak Ben and Gwen were. Even as kids they faced so much worse and they nearly die to a dumb girl. I couldn't help but notice that Kevin was missing. Probably so that Captain Nemesis wouldn't have been defeated so easily. Ben could have turned into Diamond Head or Chromostone.

I remember people hated this episode because it felt like an unwelcome interruption of the Aggregor story arc, and the fact it came right after Ben sworn to save the Andromeda Five gave the impression he was wasting time dating celebrities and doing competitions with other superheroes. Personally I got a soft spot for it because I like superhero stories and I *loved* that fight at the end. Though.... yeah, now I realize that they really keep having Ben re-learn that damn lesson of "it's not about fame it's about helping people", which he should really have known.

yeah, timing was weird, introducing more love drama with Julie was a weird decision after episode 100, and while entertaining the "contest for charity" is kinda mid when it's just a suited up dude vs. ben's arsenal. There was no way he'd lose. Still, I'd give it a 1 if only because the setup for Kristen Stewart's Stockholm syndrome made for one of the more interesting topics for UA S3 to delve into. Shame they didn't do much more with that in OV, but it's surprising a kid's show would even touch it.

2:10 you know, as repetitive as it is for ben to go through the same moral lessons, One has to keep in mind new younger fans that didn’t watch the previous series should probably be granted new opportunities to be taught it. I also think it’s actually realistic for someone needing to be reminded of similar lessons over the course of their life, especially if there’s a large year gap. At the very least it’s nice for ben to come to this conclusion himself here and in Omniverse. All that said, *every captain nemesis episode has been absolutely Meh for me.* and getting reminded of Jennifer almost certainly being an adult makes this one worse for me…that and it Muddles with the momentum of the andromeda arc.

I agree learning the same lesson is not a problem, we could use some refreshers from time to time. However it's the fact that Ben's character seems to bounce between focus on saving people and egotistical is what frustrates me, especially if the episodes are aired one after another.

Just because it's realistic, doesn't mean it's good for the narrative. Even if I buy your argument, Ben relearns this same lesson in Omniverse, which happens in the same year as UA. Edit: Also, it's just as realistic for a lesson to stick with a person for a long, long time.

I don't think this episode deserves such a low importance score, since it's the introduction of two main characters and technically the introduction of the 12th dimension, which appears in omniverse. Also, it's completely necessary for Catch a Falling Star

1:07 this is not the only episode. they did something similar whit one of omniverse episode's too. the one about a spy among plumbers. plumbers were confused about how common criminals in under town has access to plumber weapons. which turns out its gorven ( the evil four arm guy witch was also in alien force video game ) giving this weapons to syphon ( sorry if its wrong spell ) and his men

Catch a falling star is my second favorite ben 10 episode...but just like if all else fails, hit 'em where they live, and I believe night of the living nightmare won't and didn't get a full breakdown...The episodes with captain nemesis are top

Personally rather liked this episode though I see why it got some of the scores it did. If I were to judge it though, I'd probably of given it a 1 in importance and 4 in entertainment. I brought it up elsewhere but I think this episode would of been a good one for a season more focused on Ben's fame as the plot arc with Will Harangue as the overarching villain. Putting the focus on his fame would work for early in a new iteration of the show and help separate it from the Aggreggor/Ultimate Kevin Arc. Even have a late season episode where Nemesis returns with Armor upgraded by the Stalker's parts or as the pilot to a new version of the Stalker to act as a red herring for who's responsible for the Stalker

There's alot that can be done with Ben needing to be concerned about his image and how people see him and how that impacts what he does as another layer of stakes on top of the ones usually present and something that can be manipulated by villains.

@@Master_E444 True. Honestly… I’d made Ben less of a jerk, especially in Duped. He doesn’t make a scene, rather, Ben is actually concerned about Julie’s game. Maybe save the whole Sumo Slammers thing for Julie later when the game’s done. Nemesis for sure should have been introduced at episode 1. Maybe have him be surprised that a teen is a hero.

@@justinesun631 I think Nemesis can be saved for a mid-season introduction as a red herring for the final villain of the season. Really, it's Harangue due to his position and financial power, acting as a man behind the man for Nemesis and making it seem like Ben's the villain for fighting him. Maybe in the end Jimmy uses his hacking skills to expose Harangue's backing of villain activities and clear Ben's name

I think this deserves at least a 1 or 2 in importance. The episode where Jennifer develops stockholm syndrome is sometimes talked about in the fandom, and this episode adds context. Also, Captain Nemesis does show up again in Omniverse in _The Vengers_ and that episode is kinda funnier while knowing that these are ex-heroes (plus Kane North's episode also got a 1 in importance).

I do like this episode a lot. Mainly cuz I did pick up on the Iron Man similarities, which was my fav movie at the time. Ben's rant near the end was good, but my fav piece of it was simply Water Hazard yelling "JUST. BE. QUIET!" As for the one time world building that come from Nesmith, I'd say it'd be the Dimension 12 robots that supposedly he has "fought before Ben was even born". With Harangue Nation literally filming that very second, it could've cued a montage of past time the robots and Nesmith have been involved or something. Better than nothing, to say the least. Also, "cross pollination joke" lmao.

I think Will has the potential to be a big Ben 10 villain akin to Enoch in the original series. He's a public figure that Ben can't just punch to take him down. He's an underused character that I would love to see more fan works take explore. He's like the Lex Luthor to Ben's Clark Kent/Superman. Also, Ben learning the same lesson is annoying every time it happens. I feel ya.

Enoch as a villain not that high of a bar to reach in all honesty. If anything, that esoterica high priest probably had some potential to be a bug public influencer without being an obvious criminal. If I remember he was the owner of some big shot company as well

3:32 have to keep pointing this out; no ninjas traditionally are about enduring, tricking ones opponent, and taking an opening to strike. A ninja is built to wear down their opponents mentally, and physically. Nothing about a orange metal suit is, "ninja" if anything an actual ninja fighting Ben WOULD BE cool!

This episode and catch a falling star are one of the best of ultimate alien in my opinion...also i really don't understand how the entertainment category works its been 1 and a half year of watching the breakdowns and now I'm confused because this episode was so interesting and built something for catch a falling star moreover the fight scenes were one of the best of ultimate alien so far (episode 1 - 9) probably ties with to hot too handle which this episode got 3 too on entertainment

entertainment is much more subjective than the other categories, it seems to be based on how good the concept of the plot is and if it works well. Ex: plot holes within the episode, filler to pass time, etc.

It's pretty simple. He rates the entertaining elements by how much he thought it was entertaining. It's good for you that you enjoyed it so much, but not everyone's going feel the same way( especially if you're like kuro and has to practically binge watch this series).

Captain Nemisis was also a boss in the Ben 10 UA game and was the one who framed Ben for the attacks all over the world as my favorite trio were on a quest to retrieve an artifact created by the Galvins! It was part of his revenge scheme for ruining his career aside from the second episode with him in it which was dark, but I live to tell about it.

This episode was placed In such a weird place release wise, why does this come right after aggregor gets the aliens and right before his ultimate plan? It feels like it could have been slotted in pretty much anywhere else ( i guess itd have to be after andreas but even thatd be better). I enjoy this episode quite a bit so I don't mind it existing, it's just in a weird place

The race could have been a great moment to introduce XLR8 into the mix. Yeah, Rath made the scene funny, but imagine the scene with the context of the announcer's dialogue: "Today it's the site of the greatest competition in modern history: between Captain Nemesis vs Ben Tennyson; it's old-school versus the new hotness, in a dual to see who rules!" *Later* "I think Jetray's faster than anybody!" *Slam* "XLR8? Woah, how's that for old-school?" *Claws clicking together* This episode was fun. Not the most important, but definitely one I enjoy rewatching every now and then.

Ah, this episode. While I can look past the fact that it was wedged in between the Andromeda and Ultimate Aggregor arc, this was a good one. I like the twist of how Captain Nemesis staged his fights by releasing villainous robots from Dimension 12, which is quite a twist. Plus as well, Ben saying that shouting one’s own name out is “Stupid” is quite an ironic and hypocritical response. Maybe he thinks no other hero should shout their own name out but him.

I would like to categorize an episode's highest could-have-gotten score by if it's bad (8.3 or lower), average (16.6 but higher than 8.3), or good (25 (or 24.9 if you want to be more specific) but higher than 16.6). So since this episode got a 14/25, that means, in my ratings method, it's an average/meh episode. Might do this for future or past episodes in U.A. who knows. What do you think?

This is a damn shame. I was really hoping this episode would get a full breakdown, I personally really love it. I think it handles Ben fame really well. Plus Ben isn't the one to let glory go to his head, Captain Nemesis is. I think he is underrated and pretty compelling villain.

This should have been more impactful. Nemesis was a legit superhero at one point. Not an actor gone nuts like Kane. Ben could started fearing that he may become like him one day.

That’s actually what happens in this episode. Well not necessarily fear but Ben’s last words to Nemesis showcases Ben’s deep seated anger at himself for stooping so low for developing a high ego after the Highbreed Invasion. Julie’s words are meant to support that’s what’s going on when she says, “You are talking about him right?” after. “This” impacts Ben’s decision during the Ultimate Kevin half of Season 2, where Ben goes into a polar opposite mode partly because of what he saw in Nemesis and has to be reminded by Max not to forget on help people. As Ben responds by going into a verbal self-reflection on how his fame went to his head and how he became a jerk because of it.

If that flashback shown in Omniverse is something to really count on (of him talking to a young reporter Will Harangue to the cameras instead of putting down the fire of a building, thing that Ben did it in seconds as XLR8) dude was always a jerk attention seeker.

For me personally this episode seems like importance has a one because Campton Nemesis comes back in two more episodes. One in season three Ultimate alien and another one in Omniverse.
