THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

@@Juli_is_Online still ov charmcaster is more fun than uaf. uaf one tries to make me care about her but it really just doesn't work cause they suddenly give charmcaster a nice persona to justify her evil actions. It really does not work. She just feels cliche character. I have seen better morally gray-written characters than charmcaster

Loving the poetry of both of these Charmcaster episodes' finale. Her name is Hope, Michael forgets it and her father abandons her. By doing so she loses herself, loses all hope.

I think it needs to be mentioned that Gwevin's limitations are self-imposed. If either of them stopped being as attached to their humanity, they could do all Darkcaster could and more.

@- SageAegis - Using an artifact specifically designed to do just that. But I tend to agree, Kevin and Michael both have unlimited absorption potential, it's just that Kevin focuses on matter and Michael on Mana.

@- SageAegis - The Dominus was whole last time, and he likely only took enough out of Kevin to make it look like a cure artifact so he'll be tricked into leading Gwen to him, which worked, and Kevin broke it because he DID use it to absorb the Tennysons without limit right beforehand.

I love the line "Of course the first boy that's ever liked me" from charmcaster, it's such a human line but also shows the history and jealously between the two.

It would have been amazing to see the dark trio with Charmcaster, Darkstar, and Albedo who would try to frame the trio for a slew of galactic crimes. They are each unstable in their own rights where Michael is a power hungry creep, Hope is trying to force a connection like Gwen has, Albedo emotionally is still too angry to think like a proper Galvan which causes irregular transformations. It also could demonstrate the level of trust the people of earth truly have with people like Harangue using it to reinforce the lack of faith. It can even get under Ben’s skin about how George was still in a sense right. George argues that he’s been doing this for over a millennium and has gathered almost complete trust that cannot be easily broken, Ben still being a kid only has trust when the world has a laser pointed at it and not with actual public relations. He’s treated like a celebrity but not someone of actual knowledge, experience and a level of authority. I would have traded the dream episode for that just so we can bring back the idea of George before the finale and Ben still struggling with the idea that he may be in over his head despite Vilgax, the Highbreed, Aggregor and more.

Fun fact Albedo was meant to be in this episode as well but Darkstar was not but honestly your Idea is better. Darkstar apparently was not going to come back in UA until they mentioned him in Enemy Of My Frenemy and the crew were like oh shit we forgot Michael. As for Night Of The Living Nightmare I don't know.

I had a fanmade series in Ben 10 Fanon Wiki which was something like that, but it was more of a B-team for the heroes, with reformed villains. It had Charmcaster and Albedo but instead of Darkstar I put Aggregor because I was obsessed with his arc back in the day (I think I brought him back from the dead which some lame excuse lol).

I actually liked the Gwevin conflict in this episode. It shows that even the best couples can have their down moments, and in the end they do make up fairly easily. Plus, it’s meant to parallel how in the end, Kevin and Gwen still work out, but Michael and Hope do not.

i remember finding their episode absolutely fascinating at the time. on the one hand, charmcaster is so emotionally damaged that when this prince charming guy falls right into her lap, she probably *wants* to be in love with him. she wants this to be the perfect love story that takes away her loneliness. but from her history, we know she might well be using him. and darkstar is known as this manipulator, so when charmcaster jumps into his arms he'd probably consider her easy prey - but she's also so much more powerful and impressive than anyone he's ever met and she did save his life, so he may well actually be falling in love with her. the entire episode keeps you wondering whether they're genuinely in love or manipulating the other, from both sides of the relationship. and that dynamic is absolutely fascinating to me. and the best part is that they were both introduced and characterized this way prior to the episode, so it's just like two unrelated parts of the story that naturally connected to each other and fit together perfectly to make this incredibly interesting dynamic. fantastic storytelling overall.

After re watching this episode and the previous charmcaster episode I've always wondered what about charmcaster's mother? We get no mention, implication or reveal of her existence we get some information on her father but not mother.

I didnt know about the reason for his name being "morning star" so now that i do know i totally agree about the wings, maybe it could have started as a ball, pop into a wing form (like Caterpillars do) and then reverse when its going away

This is also one of my favorite "filler" episodes. I love how Michael is a manipulator through and through here, and it's played completely straight on the abusive boyfriend angle. I love how Charmcaster is genuinely looking for a partner in him. She falls into his trap, and like Gwen says, there's a part of her that knows it. The "nickname used so I don't have to know your real name" is also genius as it shows just how little he cares. It reflects real abusive partners well. Also Kuro, while I can see your point about the arguments being more petty, I also think it serves its purpose as a healthier side look at arguments too well. At the end of the day, Kevin and Gwen love each other, and they show it constantly. Even when they're fighting, it isn't truly to tear each other down. However, Charmcaster clearly is head over heels for Michael, but he couldn't care less about her. He only cares about what she could do for him, which is the insidious side to his compliments. He pretends to lift her up into the stratosphere with these honeyed words so she doesn't see when he's ransacking her home just below the clouds. It's a cover, and fortunately for her, it eventually gets blown. They are clearly the foil relationship. Not every fight means your partner doesn't love you, and not every compliment is a sign that you are being loved. Even their powers (mana manipulation + energy vampirism vs mana manipulate + absorption) are similar for this purpose. It's silly, but it certainly has a narrative purpose, and I think that can't be ignored.

This episode DOES get referenced again during Charmcaster's arc in Omniverse, but only vaguely. Darkstar explains Charmcaster kicking him out Legerdomain to Gwen as if she wasn't there.

I love this episode Its just sad for me I had the same issues like Charmcaster of loving the wrong people of trusting the wrong person of ignoring all signs of their real anture no matter how obvious those signs were just because I cared for them too much or I was in love with the idea of them but not truly them seeing how like Hope I can never learn to love again or trust again this episode just breaks my heart Charmcaster was a good person but like with Team Rocket in Pokemon regardless of how much good she was she ended up being a bad person and committed to the path of evil simply because of the bad things that happened to her in her life

An interesting analogy to compare the powers of these 2 couples would be Dark side vs light side in Star wars. Charm gaster and Morningstar have the power without any limitations and restrictions( like the dark side), while Gwen and Kevin have to follow their ethics and heart ( Similar to the light side of force users)

I only watched half of the Omniverse and I don't remember what Charmcaster becomes there. I have seen a bit of clips of her. But if this ties that she become such a character in Omniverse because of this, then it makes sense. I can't wait for Ominverse breakdowns. Even tough its not my favorite B10 franchise, I am willing to watch it.

One of the main reasons why those aliens didn't get to reappear is because around season 6 of ov CN decided to stop adding on aliens to the series so no more new aliens or old ones because it was getting hard to make toys so if they didn't already appeared in ov then they wouldn't appear

I see where you're coming from when you say that, but I’ve always gotten the impression that both of those episodes were made to get the audience to sympathize with Charmcaster so that we'd be more receptive to the idea of her eventually getting to redeem herself. Sure, you could retroactively justify her characterization in Omniverse by saying that the pain from those two episodes prompted her behavior, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that was the intended direction. Moreover, the argument of "don't blame Omniverse" just doesn't really make sense to me. The Omniverse crew had complete control over the decisions they made aside from any limitations or demands imposed by the network. Why shouldn't they be blamed for how they decided to handle Charmcaster?

I really liked this episode, it made me want to cheer for Charmcaster to have a redemption arc. I don't mean where she becomes good and join Ben and his team as heroes but more on that she changes how she rules ledgerdomain and be a fair ruler to her kingdom or she could choose an alternative where she freely gives her kingdom to someone else to rule justly and Charmcaster becomes a somewhat wonderer that travels the multiple realms and help anyone she meets, kinda like a doctor who situation but you know... with magic

It was this episode that truly changed my mind on Charmcaster towards liking her and having her as practically my favorite female villain of the verse. Was even an influence for my own Ben 10 fanfic au where I do redeem her and have her joining the trio in that verse come full circle.

Overall her arc is the same, though with some added stuff with the MC here and there to develop some things that get hunkered down after the rejection of her father(where the mc learns her name thanks to a cosmic alteration to his being due to an alteration in fighting Ultimate Aggragor in the forged of creation) and then a big rageful brawl occurs between Dark Star and the mc when he learns that Dark Star insulted her by not remembering her name and ends with his confession towards her. Should note that at the moment this au is still in big developments as I'm formatting how I want to build both the current and new arcs and what things are getting altered for the verse(currently going with alien force and ultimate alien form of Osmosians and an altered atomix at minimum thus far)

For me I felt it was a suitable end to both characters. Even the environment with dark Star at the end was very similar to his first episode when he faced Ben Gwen and kevin.

Honestly I wish Micheal had a bit more nuance. Like him actually reciprocating Charmcaster's feelings, but either caught up in revenge or drunk on power. Throughout the episode he doesn't really ever seem like he's genuinely into her beyond the power. I feel after all the other episodes with him always ending up betraying for the sake of more power, it's about time he get fleshed out a bit more as a person rather than a villain, not unlike Charmcaster herself. Hell, part of me even thought some of the blame would be put on Charmcaster given she knowingly let Micheal go back with very limited power, showing that she had essentially made him dependent on her and her mana. I think it could've been far more interesting having both not only having genuine feelings for each other, but also using the other in a complex, honestly toxic relationship that could've been improved and built upon with time, and the two could've been a dangerous powercouple, and yet also end up helping both of them move past their villainous tendencies.

This episode honestly shows just how much potential both Charmcaster and Michael had as characters. For the former it genuenly seems that every time the writers are *about to* take her character in some really interesting places they conoletely rebrand her or set her back to 0 And for the latter, the foundation of his character is fantastic. The "fallen angel" symbolism of his character combined with him being a parasyte both literally and figuratively makes for a cool dualistic antagonist, but it genuenly seems like they never actually *do* anything with him.

I think I somehow didn't get to watch this episode so I was genuinely caught of guard on the clip you showed of Charmcaster with just her undershirt instead of her usual outfit. I'm genuinely surprised that slipped in but also further emphasizes how toxic their relationship is where they're really just using each other and how Charmcaster just really wants to feel love. Ngl her two character centered episodes and both of them ends with her having a bad ending just leaves a sour taste. Its heartbreaking but also kinda relatable in a way, it may not relate to you personally but you can maybe relate it to someone you know.

Hey Kuro just finished doing rewatch throughs of both Ben 10 and Danny Phantom so I could read all of 5YL (had a great time reading btw can’t wait for Chapter 13 keep up the great work) but I had so much fun watching Danny Phantom again that show ended way to soon and you could tell there was so much untapped potential left in it by the end but anyway was wondering if post Ben 10 breakdowns if there’d be potential for 5YL’s other half to get the same treatment

Definitely loved this episode and, like you, I didn’t like Gwen and Kevin arguing. I’m okay with them having relationship problems but here? It just seems rather childish and Gwen acting so freaking petty. This feels like an argument that Ben and Julie will have than Gwen and Kevin, who have an actual healthy and strong relationship

Soooo.... are we not gonna address the MASSIVE elephant in the room. You know the AGE GAP of these characters dating. Like in classic series both Ben and Gwen are 10 while Charmcaster is at least in her mid to late teen years. Then, in AF, when ben and Gwen are 15, applying that charmcaster should be at least in her early to mid-20s alongside Micheal was flirting with Gwen meaning he had to be around the same age as her (plus in his debut episode he said that the "zombie" girls had the same uniform from his school further applying he's still a high-schooler) But then in UA, that takes place a year later we see Darkstar and Charmcaster full on dating. So either Micheal is even more of creep and a liar, the people of Legerdomain age differently or charmcaster is the creep.

Well, no one said that Michael or Charmcaster were good people. It would fit Michael's character to be a creep like that given that he sucks the life force out of his ex-girlfriends.

No charmcaster is 5 years older than ben. Ben is 16 in UA meaning charmcaster is 21. Michael looks to be around Kevin's age who's probably 18. Their age gap is not that big. Michael could be older since he absorbs life from people to stay young and powerful. He is a liar and creep either way he was caught thirsting for Gwen's powers that's all he cares about.

I'm completely forgot about it was implied Charmcaster and Morningstar slept together. Out of the blatant implied moments I remember, it was "To Catch A Falling Star" with Jennifer, even though you could just say she only dyed and cut her hair in the shower only.

The fact that she is named Hope sets up a redemption up so much!! Heck, there’s a reason people ship Hope and Ben as a result of this.

That would be interesting. Even though Hope is an adult, she acts like a teenager, a nod how Legerdemain time table is faster then Earth. Even if there's an alternate timeline where Charmcaster succeed in stealing Ben's body, in the end Ben will forgive her and let Hope live in Ben's place so she can have a new life while Ben regain his old body and start doing damage control (which it isn't that big deal as the Omnitrix switch Ben's body's gender so no one will remember a female Ben).

@@imrancassim1439 It depends on where to start and where to end. In novel, some slow burn starts from Book 1 and ends at Book 4. On TV series, usually start from the beginning or in the middle. Short answer, Alien Force Season 3 to Ultimate Alien Season 3 finale. The main problem on slow burn romance is that sometimes the author stalls too much. So I think this is a better way.

Mhm.... now that you say it, yeah after all she went through, Omniverse made the logical choice by having her further go into insanity... I guess. Personally I enjoyed this episode. Was genuinely shocked that they got away with implying she slept with Micheal. Like *wow* , how did this get past the censors? But seriously though, that was an interesting dynamic, safe for maybe Mike being an idiot toward the end.

He could have been 17/18 when the trio met him. So he could be 18 or 19 by the time of this episode. Depending on when his birthday is.

Charmcaster was 15 in classic so she's 5 years older than Ben. Kevin is probably 2 years older than ben. In UA ben is 16 so Charmcaster should be 21. Michael looks to be around Kevin's age ie 18 she's not much older than him. Also keep in mind Michael has been draining life from people to stay young I think he could be much older.

Gwen is 16 in UA and OV, Charmcaster is in her early 20s, and Michael was never given an age as far as I know. Michael could be around 18-19, so the relationship could work. And they're villains in a toxic relationship anyway, so it's not promoted as being a good thing regardless. I think Kuro brought up before that the characters ages aren't really kept in mind a lot of the time. And I mean, they are a bunch of teenagers affiliated with space police that have actual authority to carry out missions. I imagine the writers just didn't think that much about it.

Honestly, after charmcaster killed the trio and did not show one second of remorse for it after they literally put their bad blood aside during their team up episode, I just don't give a damn about her, her motives, or her feelings.
