"Hell's Gate" Passage - Hell or Bucket List Worthy?! [Ep5]

Crossing from Long Island to Manhattan is a stressful transit - no wonder they call it HELL'S GATE! You have to time your crossing to coincide with slack tide or you simply can't make it - at least not in a sailboat. But, the experience is a truly special one. Like sailing into Sydney Harbor and passing the Opera House, this is one sailing experience that is truly unforgettable. Throw in a final pass by the Statue of Liberty and a couple nights in the North Cove IGY Marina, and wow, it's quite an amazing experience (and video)!

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran named "Archer" and sharing our adventures in family-friendly episodes on KZfaq!
OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States and sailed down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia.
OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via KZfaq and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids.
FAQ: More questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or answers to many of your questions in this 40 minute episode:

I'm excited for your children, I'm originally from the big Apple and it's good to see how amazing the nite life is. I'll be binge watching your adventure as I did with Zatara.

Nice video. Glad the kids got to see and do so much in the city. It is Hell Gate instead of Hell's Gate. One of my favorite bridges anywhere being the railroad bridge that takes the NEC over to Randell's Island. Hopefully you have pics/video of it for the kids to compare in Sydney when you get to that side of the world. What you tag as the Washington bridge is the Manhattan Bridge. Congrats on such a wonderful slip for the night. Your kids handle the heights of the tower better than I can.

I was in a head-on train wreck on Hell's Gate Bridge in 1984 when I was a teenager. So freaky to see it again. Much better angle for you guys, though!

You've got some seriously underrated talent shining through mate. I've only just discovered you but you're up there with Sailing Zatara, Uma, Wynns and everyone's favourite, La Vagabonde. Keep up the good work man, it'll be worth it in the end even if you don't get the recognition now. God bless you and your family and safe travels.

IGY was nice enough to cover our stay, but I believe for a boat our size it was around $500/night. Cheaper than a hotel room in Manhattan, but so worth it! Best location in NY!!!

Another great job...Doesn't your wife own the Vacay Clothing line?...I just bought a set for my graduating college bound niece...Anyway it might be a good idea for her to offer some samples to the other wives on boats...Seems like the perfect outfit for a Sailing Family...Again thanks for sharing...

Great video. One small note; technically it is Hell Gate, not Hell's Gate. It is from the Dutch Hellegat or Hellegadt. It meant clear opening or clear gate. A lot of the names in NYC and the area, to include quite a ways up the Hudson are Dutch. For example, the town of Fishkill is, in Dutch, fish creek. I am glad you got the timing correct. I have had the misfortune to fight the current and it can be unpleasant.

Do you have a Part 107 FAA license for the drone work? Just curious cause I didn't know it was allowed to fly where it seems the footage was taken from...without exemptions.

Does not look like the Hell's Gate that Sailing Uma sailed through.

They didn't show the Hell Gate leg of the passage, which was rather click-baity of them. You can see the cool train bridge in the distance at 00:30 and he talks about how to time the current, then all of a sudden they're at Roosevelt Island.
