Well this video has certainly stirred up some strong feelings. David makes it very clear he is expressing his personal opinions, and viewers are welcome to disagree - certainly the situation is different in the USA where semi-autos are more commonly used for clays and game than here in the UK. Let us know what you think in the comments, but let's keep it polite and respectful to all shooters whatever their preferences.

The boys across the pond have a high regard for tradition. This includes clothing, shotguns, accessories, etc. I do not agree that you should be banned from a bird shoot/hunt for having a semi-auto but that is their tradition and I respect it. I have seen every kind of shotgun on the sporting clays course and don’t care what people use as long as they are safe and are having fun!

I think the remarks "you'll be frowned upon if carrying one of these on the clay ground" and " if you're wearing tweed you won't be carrying one of these" make the review sound snobbish. I think he was too busy running down semi autos to fit any specs in the review.

"On a clay ground I don't believe they have a place". Really? A disappointingly biased 'review', riddled with inaccuracies (fastest action, don't expect it to shoot lighter loads etc), and sadly demonstrating an outdated attitude to these excellent guns. I'm all for a bit of tradition but semi-autos like the Maxus and A400 are now popular with many clay shooters across the UK who shoot them safely and sometimes very well. I love clay shooting with my semi-auto and usually enjoy David's videos, but having seen this one I have to wonder whether I'll be welcomed at TSC's school for those lessons I was thinking of :(

David isn't the only one, I come across this attitude to semi-autos quite often. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that in the UK semi-autos are greatly outnumbered by s/s's and o/u's, so we're less familiar with them, and the different safety protocols that apply.

Disclaimer. I’m American. I am blessed to have numerous UK pals. We hiked the Cotswolds. Bath is my favorite city and my wife makes me buy English tea time every visit to Chicago. My clays journey : I bought Pilla glasses, a nice shooting vest and a Caesar Guerini and a Perazzi. One day, at a registered shoot, an old guy with a Vietnam Vet baseball hat showed up with a ratty looking A400 multi target and his hunting dog on a rope leash. I think his sunglasses were Walmart specials. T-shirt/no vest. He shot a 94. Me….not even close. A lightbulb went off. I sold the Pillas, Ceasar and Perazzi. I bought an A400 (Cole Pro) and head out with my Oakleys. No vest, just a T-shirt. My shooting went from the 60% percentile broken targets to the mid 80s. And I feel improvement every outing. A pal I shoot with let’s me play with his DT11. No thanks. I don’t need the recoil or the additional 2 plus pounds. That’s the English system for those of you who may not know it. Means it’s really heavy. Swing and balance are gorgeous on the A400. It’s simply a matter of getting used to a particular scattergun. Now, stand back as I litter the ground with empties and that’s two hits on the scorecard please. Anyone bring their magnet?

Oh please, really disappointed with David's comments. Some years ago you would only see side by sides on game shoots, nowadays most are probably over unders. Pure snobbery, a semi auto like any firearm is a tool, some are more expensive than others and some higher quality with greater workmanships. I would also argue that Benelli are the best manufacturers of semi's but I'll leave that one for now. I own many shotguns, including semi's & pumps, some are better finished than others But they are all tools and any will dispatch a pheasant or clay. Pure snobbery. !!
@StrictlyShootingUK
@StrictlyShootingUK 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting point. Over the years I've been shooting, o/u's have become totally accepted on game shoots, which they weren't when I started. So that snobbery, if that's what it was, has changed, yet I see no movement at all in the resistance to semi-autos for driven game. Logically, if snobbery is easing over the years, you'd expect to start seeing them creeping in, but it isn't happening on any shoots I've seen.

Nice enough chap. No mention of the speed load function where the first round in the magazine is loaded into the chamber automatically when the bolt is open. Also, the magazine cut off, a safer way to unload rather than cycling the bolt. A half arsed clay/game biased review. At least the US shooters love their guns and just run what they brung. Here, like most aspects of life, it's all about status. What you shoot, how you shoot and where? Gun snobs just sap the joy out of the sport sometimes.

Leave the bolt open and insert the shell in the magazine. The load will be whisked up and into the action automatically. It is a speed loading feature that originally appeared on the Browning A-5. Also has a magazine cut-off on the opposite side. Pull it back and anything in the magazine is held in check. Then you eject the chambered round and place the right load in. Or leave it open and empty while crossing a fence.

This is the second video from the shooting channel I have clicked on featuring Dave and I will make a point to avoid anymore. Bumbling along not able to get his words out, and then on this video starts off bashing the guns people came here to look at. Very ignorant comments made, and swinging the gun around unsafely like some sort of twirling stick to top it off. I don't think semi's auto's are unwelcome on clay ground, but Dave's unsafe practices and ignorant comments certainly wouldn't be welcome!

What a biased review. I know many people who shoot semi autos at clays sites for various reasons due to health [reduced recoild], preference etc. Whoever said you should only shoot clays with an O/U. He is also very contradictory to many other very experienced people about the use etc of semi autos, I was flabergasted by his stance on semi autos. I question why he was so againgst them for clay shooting. There are many semi autos specifically designed as a clay gun. I think he should get off his biased soap box and consider reporting unbiasedly.

This review has really annoyed me. So I thought I would check out the Browning site. They actually make a specific semi auto for sporting called the MAXUS SPORTING BLACK CARBON FIBER INV+ and they state on the web site "This gun has been specially designed for sports shooting. The ventilated rib, tapered from 6mm to 8mm, gives faster targeting. Its carbon finish gives a particularly unique style."

Excellent treatment of a different point of view for us Yanks. I have a semi-auto with an extended magazine tube that holds ten rounds. It is purpose built for Snow Geese as they are listed as an invasive species. There is no limit and farmers are happy to be rid of them. The shotgun works very well and I enjoy shooting it. Imagine shooting a box of shells with only two re-loads. The shotgun can be returned to the original capacity (3 -5) without difficulty. I guess some people have too much time on their hands; but it was fun to set it up.

Thanks for the demo, don't think you have much time for semi autos. My maxus is a fine piece of kit, ultra reliable and versatile handles the lightest two and a half inch, to three and a half inch magnums. You never mentioned two functions the maxus has, the speed load function, and the unload function without having to cycle the action. There's a little catch just outside the magazine that allows you to unload each round in the magazine. Also the magazine cut of switch, that holds the rounds in the magazine, if you want to load a different round. You didn't do your homework.

It makes me smile when people say that you need to use 28 gram shells in a semi. When i started shooting a 28 gram aka 1 oz load was a piddling little squib of a round! 32 grams (1/1/8 oz) was the norm.

A semi auto shotgun as far as I'm concerned is the evolution of the shotgun. They pretty much eliminate everything negative that you inherently find an an under and over, namely weight and recoil, this along with the ability to adjust and fit the gun to personal preference confirms the benefits of owning and shooting a semi.... The only downside is the ejection of the spent cartridges, which isn't much of a major issue....i live in the UK and fully understand the shooters in the states preference and why the semi is so liked.. Maybe we need to move with the times...respect David's video though, everyone has their own opinion..

To empty the chamber simply move the magazine cut off switch to stop it feeding , the inflex recoil system also reduces the kick from a standard 28g load to very little at all , I’ve had my maxus for over two years & have only had 1 stoppage due to faulty cartridge , & use mine mainly on clay pigeon

I have a semi auto licence for clay target shooting here in Australia and you have the same mentality as alot of the older generation shooters. I haven't been to a single shoot where instead of being happy that semi autos are still about and not gone and forgotten I'm criticised for using a semi auto at least once per shoot (they aren't built for clay target shooting) I'm told. I've shot better competition with a semi auto then I ever did with a standard under and over. Comes down to preference, and if I never had a back injury and if the laws weren't so restricted here in Australia I would have used a semi auto from the very start!

I have the ultimate partridges model of the Maxus and only use it for clays. Never had anyone say a bad word to me about it at any clay ground. Plenty of people want a go though! Seen plenty of A400's too, which I would consider a clay gun. I carry it around on a sling and nobody has acted nervous (why you would be nervous of someone with a shotgun slung barrel up at a clay ground is beyond me). I've found it cycles literally any cartridge I've ever used without a single jam. Also, it has a speed loading method. With the action open, just thumb a cartridge into the magazine and it will automatically chamber it. Then push the next two in just the same. Bit of a conflict in opinion when mentioning it's a specific tool for a specific job, ie "bunny bashing", yet it was made to be a super fast competition gun? Many bunny bashing competitions there? But yeah, agree with the consensus. It's the outdated image that shooters dont need to hear when they're new to the sport. The boys in tweed with trousers tucked into their socks can continue with their traditions. They have naff all to do with the people like me who shoot only clays for fun. We should be welcoming all new shooters to all the shooting sports. As long as they're legal and behaving responsibly, keep your prejudiced views to yourself, smile and say hello.

There is a lot of snobbery in uk clay grounds but give the gun a fair chance stop pushing you’re biased opinion is it just because it’s not a Holland and Holland side by side These browning maxis 2 is a fantastic bit of kit

I’ll use my maxis and beat you at any shoot of your choice with any over under . Easily get high 40’s out of 50 birds every shoot I go to . Trust me this gun is more than capable and in my opinion best bang for your buck !!!!!

It’s no wonder gun laws in the UK are so awful. With friends like this knob, who needs enemies? I own every style of shotgun, including high grade english (and american) doubles, and my Maxus gets the nod quite frequently for trips around the clays courses. Hard to beat the versatility and reliability. Nice to target shoot with a gun you frequently hunt with. Nobody wants to go shoot modern 3” magnum steel shot duck loads through a classic Greener. Do us all a favor and put this chap on trapper duty for a bit.

Wow that’s stirred up a lot of comments! I have a maxus it’s a fantastic gun that I use for pest control! I don’t think it’s fair to use it on a pheasant shoot for the sake of the birds and on a clay ground nobody can argue they are as well suited as a break barrel because of safety reasons! I think David was trying to make that point but it got lost unfortunately!

Maxus is brilliant but I would say if ur gonna use 1 regularly then make sure u break it down to a full clean at least every 3rd time u use it! A simple barrel clean every time isn’t sufficient on this type of shotgun

I live in America and I actually shoot over unders and semi autos. Not sure exactly why semi autos are looked down upon in your country as far a competition clay shooting but I really enjoy using semi autos. Several students on my daughters clay team use semi autos and they’re sone of the best shooters I’ve seen. I enjoy over unders and semi autos and don’t look down upon anyone that chooses to shoot either. I usually really enjoy your videos but this was completely biased and full of inaccuracies!!

Nothing wrong with the review. Culturally, a repeater doesn't fit into their lineup. No biggie. But he did state it was a nice, well-shooting, bulletproof shotgun.

The one thing these shotguns are known for is the speed loading, whereby you insert the shell from the bottom and the action will close automatically. You don't have to push buttons. And no it's not the fastest, and no it's not the best. No one cares about you obnoxious opinion. Banning people because they're using a semi auto. Plus you should stick to the subject, review the gun. No one cares about your stupid rules in britain and your skeet shooting etikets. Shooting is for fun, not full of pretence about what gun you shoot where. And if you wear that green vest, you don't shoot a semi, please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny review actually Typical elitism ,trying to refrain from showing his disdain ,about a semiautomatic shotgun. 😂 I actually thought I was going to see a comprehensive review from a so called British reviewer, but was I wrong.. If someone is wondering why I would even comment on this old of review, it's because I recently purchased a lightly used Maxus Carbonfiber Sporting edition, and have been searching for honest reviews on it. Guess I will keep looking

You call it a review? All you did was showing your dislike for semi autos. You completely forgot to mention 3 main features of maxus. 1- the magazine cut off, 2- the easy loading system without using the switch , 3- easy way to empty the mag without racking the bolt all the time.

I was on board, everyone has their opinion, but to say a 3" gun wont shoot soft loads is just uninformed. Maybe get a reviewer that has some experience with the type of weapon they are reviewing so as not to make a fool of themselves.

A very poor review . Contradictory and full of errors . " This has got three barrels in it " - mmn I see only one barrel . This is no good for lady or young shooters , because you need to to put heavy shells in it to make it cycle -Wrong ! Says the recoil is heavy for lady shooters and then later in the video praises the gun for it's low recoil - mmn ? I know a couple of experienced clay shooters that have turned to semi autos in later life and continue to enjoy shooting despite of arthritis . So not welcome on your clay ground eh? Talks about slow cycle times vs double barrel guns and then praises and demonstrates how fast it will cycle --- mmn ? Does not demonstrate the magazine cutoff . Does not demonstrate the speed load capability .[ or speed unload ] Talks about a high comb , when in fact the gun has a low comb - [ I have a Maxus and have measured the drop at comb ] . Describes the gun as "agricultural" - tell that to Browning ! I've worked in agriculture all my life and resent this attitude . Perpetuates British gun snobbery . - [ So would a Turkish Yildiz be welcome on a traditional British shoot ?] . You can wear tweed underpants for all I care , that will be the last gun review of yours that I watch .
