I have lived in Mexico for 41 years and have had amazing medical here, including surgeries. On the other hand, I've heard of medical malpractice like these people experienced , happen in the States. So I suggest putting the blame on specific clinics or doctors, not the country.....

Yea, let's shift the focus to Mexico. And completely ignore the real problem! The high cost of healthcare in this country!

Two of my cousins & my cousin’s sister in law had bariatric surgery overseas with no complications. I feel sorry these people had bad experiences. I hope they can get the support & medical help they need & heal.

I cannot continue to watch this without commenting. This program makes it sound as if the same complications never happen in the US. I'm a nurse and I can assure you they do. As with ANY medical procedure, patients should thoroughly research the provider and the facility regardless of where it is done. Furthermore, the story the one gentleman told about his mother in law dying d/t the gastric band is not necessarily a reflection on the surgeon. That is a potential complication and inherent risk of any gastric band procedure. The surgeon could be at fault if the patient was not fully informed or the band was placed wrong. But, there again, you cannot paint all surgeons from Mexico with the same broad stroke. I got my gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico and I did a ton of research and was thoroughly convinced that I was getting one of the best surgeons in the world. Now, I am sure of it. Every step of the way including pre op preparation and post op follow up have been outstanding. Knowing what I do now, I would choose my surgeon in Mexico all over again, even if insurance would pay for surgery in the US.

My family member had a surgery done in Mexico for wait loss. He started having really bad pains when he was back home. He went to a doctor and they did an ultra sound. There was a towel in his stomach. 🤮 had to get surgery immediately to get it out. Be safe out there no matter where in the world it is!

This can literally happen anywhere even in the USA.

My friend and her daughter both had their surgery for weight loss in Mexico, with no complications and great results. They did their homework, and found a Dr with great credentials.

I went to Mexico and it changed my life for the good. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to that clinic again because the care was even better than in Canada where I’m from.

I had my gastric sleeve surgery in 2015 in Mexico. I had an amazing experience and no complications at all. My Mother had gastric sleeve here in the US (Texas) and now she’s about to have to undergo another surgery because the surgeon didn’t cut her sleeve correctly and it’s causing major acid reflux. The acid is going up into her esophagus and her doctor told her she will eventually get cancer of the esophagus if she doesn’t get another surgery to fix this problem. Soooo I’m glad I choose Mexico and not USA for this particular surgery. There are bad surgeons and good ones there just like here. You have to do the research. You have to talk to others that have went and experienced this first hand.

As a Mexican I know we portray "poor country, poor people" vibes and the idea whatever you get here may be poor quality, but the true is there are also good and certified doctors (who are not cheap unfortunately) for these surgeries and with all due respect I infere these people here came to Mexico to have a cheaper surgery and "pay less". You get what you paid for they say...

Just because it’s more affordable doesn’t mean you’re going to get bad results. These ladies just happened to visit the wrong doctor or didn’t do enough research. A lot of people go to Mexico or somewhere else and receive amazing results

As if the problem was Mexico! Surely we could find multiple horror stories from people who had this complicated surgery in the US. Blame individual practitioners or hospitals, but not the entire country. Also, maybe it is time to rethink America's health system.

I am so sorry about this, I am Mexican, we all know in Tijuana theres a lot of fake clinics, but please, theres wonderful doctors here too, just take the time to do your research, consult with the Mexican Medical Assosiation, they have control of every register doctor and nurse, also you need to consult with a few before you choose the best one.

This doesn't just happen in Mexico, I live in the United Kingdom and we have an NHS system where they are supposed to take absolutely fantastic care of you and after-care is part and parcel of any surgery that is performed. In 2018 I had a gastric band implanted by one of the more senior consultants in the NHS and it nearly killed me, I have the band for 11 months and I lost only 6 pounds and that band was causing significant throat burning and they told me it was all in my mind, I had a pepsin test done privately that showed I had significantly levels of pepsin in my saliva now pepsin is a digestive enzyme that should not be anywhere near the throats and consequently I was rushed forward to have the band removed and by NHS standards it was removed very quickly. What I am trying to say is it doesn't matter where the surgery is done it could be the best place on earth if your body is not going to accept it then is not going to accept it and that is not the fault of the surgeon, some people are just plain unlucky me being one of them. I hope the people on your show are doing well and feeling much better my thoughts are with them

I had gastric bypass in 2010 right here in California and have had overwhelming issues including given a 8% chance of survival after my pouch literally blew a out. After 6 mths in the ICU I was discharged at 82 lbs. I lost my career and now I am in and out of the hospital. This surgery has many downfalls regardless of where you have it.

I had gastric bypass surgery in Juarez, Mexico on 03/28/2017. I had an absolutely WONDERFUL experience! I received top notch care, had zero complications, and am living a very healthy life a year and a half later. I have no regrets about my decision to go to Mexico. The facility was clean and modern, the doctors, nurses, and staff were amazing, and I believe with all my heart that they saved my life. I have gone from 425-165 (well, depending on the day, I can be anywhere between 163-168), and I feel wonderful! Viva la Mexico!

My sister in law went to Mexico for the surgery. Was there for 5 days. Came home and 48 hours later she collapsed at home. She was in the ICU for days and ended up developing MRSA from the IV sight ( from surgery.) Had to have wound care for almost 2 months. Ended up costing her 20 grand anyways.

had my surgery 3 months ago in Turkey and i have zero regrets its the best choice i could of ever made. I'm already 61 lbs down and i feel great i have no complications and i have a fantastic doctor, surgeon and nutritional team at my fingertips whenever I need them.

I'm a retired nurse and I use to work with a nurse that was very thin. I always assumed that she was just like that, but then she told me she had had the lap band surgery, but she had it here in the states, not in Mexico. Well it doesn't matter where yu have it you still need to follow certain lifestyle changes. Well she wanted to still keep losing weight, even though she was already skinny. Instead of eating healthy, she would skip meals and hardly eat anything. She was always sick and would miss work. Well I went to work one day and was told she had died, because she had gone into cardiac arrest and they couldn't bring her back. Even though she was very skinny, she always saw herself as fat. You can't fix that with surgery. I wish her mental needs had been addressed along with her weight needs.

I love how everyone in the comments is testifying to the quality of care you can get in Mexico. It really is about doing your research, I went to a doctor that worked on my friend and her two sisters. A year later I did it and I’m doing great other than swollen esophagus which will heal itself in a couple of weeks. Doctor was amazing, stayed an extra day at the hospital just to make sure I’m okay. When a stitch was hurting and too tight they opened the clinic and had a doctor come in to take a look, got extra pain meds.

I am thankful that these people are OK. Thank you JESUS!

I went in March of 2019. No regrets!!! 162 lbs down. I know 5 other people who went...not one has had an issue. Bad things happen ANYWHERE.

At my highest i weighed 262. One day i just said ENOUGH. I gave myself a limit of 1200 calories a day, cut out soda, limited grains, and walked 6 days a week, starting with 20 minutes and working up to 120 minutes. I currently weigh 139 and have just a few lbs to go til goal. You CAN do it without surgery.

I was uncomfortable with the focus on "south-of-the-border" aspect being the problem. There were so many more pertinent and interesting ways to approach this issue. I know two people who died after complications from weight-loss surgery they got in the U.S. This kind of surgery is highly risky. Not only that, the cost of healthcare in the U.S. is way too high, and insurance companies should not be classifying these surgeries as cosmetic.

My friend is a doctor and she did a lot of research then went to Mexico to get weight loss surgery, she got a gastric sleeve then 2 years later a bypass, she paid a fraction of the price you would pay in the US. Her surgeries were successful, she got a CD of the entire surgery & she was put up in a spa style resort, she gets weekly follow up calls post surgery. She said the experience was excellent. Unfortunately she struggled to lose weight despite the surgery because of her lifestyle choices. Do your research & prepare yourself to change your diet, your sleep regimen & live a different healthier lifestyle then you did before.

Someone should do a story about complications that have occurred to patients right here in the USA. I have seen some bad ones.

My mom almost died of septic shock after having surgery in Mexico, all the people saying it can happen in the US too are correct however it happens far more frequently in Mexico and is less likely in the US.

This happens to people who travel to Mexico without knowing wealthy people there, whom are the ones that know the best (and most expensive) doctors there. Americans go to whoever doctor, and we, Mexicans, do not do that.

These are 3 people that had a bad experience. People in the states have these experiences too. Compare it to the successful stories of others who have had cosmetic surgery in Mexico. Do your own research people. Actual research.

I got my breast done in TJ México and they are amazing!!! I literally did alot of research, ask for references and most importantly, I didn't go by myself.

Do your research people. I cannot lay 100% total blame on the medical facilities. I will say the woman was the only one who really has a claim for damages. Her spleen was cut and her stomach was left open. That is sad.

I had gastric sleeve surgery in June 2019. My insurance paid for everything except my deductible which I paid off in monthly installments. No more diabetes and A1C down at about 5. Hypertension is under control and I'm now down to 155 lbs. Of course my surgery was done here in the states with a great surgeon. I feel so bad for these people who had to go out of the country.

I know two people that went to Mexico for weight loss surgery and both times they were very successful. The hospital was incredibly clean, the doctors and staff were well educated and showed confidence in there work by being able to answer all their questions. You have to do your research. If you find a medical facility that is highly recommended and has a good track record you should go with that one. Every procedure has its risks and we know this is also true in the US.

My cousin on the other hand had surgery down in Florida and it went wrong for her. We all need to research

This is so dumb and irrelevant. I personally did the gastric sleeve in Mexico and it changed my life. I’m healthier than ever... Every medical procedure has risks. Those are three vs thousands of successful cases.

I feel bad for the bad experiences. I had lap band surgery in Tijuana I'm 2005. It was very non-invasive (you can hardly see the 5 little scars) and I had a good surgeon.

As a wound specialist RN, I had treated the surgical wounds to patients who had the procedure done in Mexico. They did receive instructions on post care and advised not to travel. They did not follow the instructions and the surgical site dehisced!

Bottom line you must do your research, this could easily have happened in the U S also.

I had surgery here in the states last year, I had to have another one less than two months later because my surgeons LEFT A MEDICAL INSTRUMENT INSIDE OF MY BODY which caused infection and lacerations. Did y'all know that the fine print on those contracts they make you sign before surgery says you can't sue if something like that happens? I didn't. One of my good friends had bariatric surgery in Mexico 2 years ago and has had zero problems and is much healthier now. I can almost guarantee you that the American medical board paid for this program to scare people out of getting medical care anywhere but in America.

This is basically a commercial brought to you by the American Medical Association, scaring people so they won’t go outside the country for surgery.

I had my surgery in Cancun, absolutely no issues, great success. I do know people in the states in my city that have had massive complications. They make it seem like its only in Mexico.

Is not happening only in Mexico. My friend have that surgery in California and she is going through the same thing the problem is the surgery. Don’t cut your stomach people.

I had a friend who did this. She is dead now from an incurable virus she got there.

How could the woman go alone?? Even with minor operations a trusted family member or friend should be with you.

It does not matter where you get surgery done, this happens and everywhere. My mom got surgery done in Mexico and everything came out fine.

Sorry to say .. these complications can happen ANYWHERE and with ANY surgery ! I don't think it has anything to do with Mexico . I've actually heard that the Drs in Mexico have more schooling than the Drs in the States. I think it all has to do with the after care and staying in Mexico until your aftercare is complete ... and it is EXTREMELY important to do extensive research on the Dr and any past problems/deaths

In most cases, the majority of cosmetic procedures done anywhere in the world, even by the "best" doctors, will come back to seriously bite you as you age. Avoid the misery and regret later in life, and just don't do it.

I had my weight loss surgery in Santa Barbara, from one of the top 10 surgeons in America. He is a great surgeon and has been featured in Time Magazine. I had my surgery in 2009, it was perfect and I came out amazing and healthy. Pick your surgeon carefully. I weighed 330 pounds at my heaviest, and he was on my insurance. I have been healthy and happy for the last 11 years. I lost 200 pounds and have kept it off for 11 years. I had a tummy tuck and I am so happy.

They weren't that over weight 👀 they could've went on a diet stopped sugar and carbs for a 1year, everyone wants it all too easy, I understand people who are 400lb or more going for that option,

My heart goes out to these people. I had the rouxny procedure in 2006 in the US and have maintained. I've only had a few complications but they are considered minor and manageable. I can only hope they can recover from this. The doctors involved in their care should be jailed.... Prayers and ~HUGS~

Paying $24K for a surgery here also comes with a disclaimer of a list of potential risks. Never go to have a surgery anywhere alone. Have someone waiting for the outcome of your procedure, checking how you look, and what meds you are receiving and how you are reacting. Have some one help you to the restroom.....you get my point. I had sleep apnea surgery in Mexico and it went just fine. Do you homework look for a good Doctor, complications can happen anywhere even in the States.

More anti Mexican propaganda. The number of surgeries that go well ( The MILLIONS) far outweigh the complications which happen here in the states all the time as well. This is completely one sided. It depends on where you go. Feel horrible for these folks but this is one sided.

i work in bariatric clinic and i hear a lot of people tell me they goin to mexico and DR to get these surgery cheap but they think they can keep eating their old way i tell my patients this is a life style change. it took u years to put on but surgery to lose it fast sorry that’s not how it works

I had a modified form of gastric bypass in the US bc a car wreck lacerated my intestines and the insurance refused to due exploratory surgery but bc I was 400 pounds they immediately approved the gastric bypass!! The surgeon knew I was extremely sick and didn't make me wait for all the normal behavioral classes (which I took right after surgery) he got me into the OR and when they got in there he couldn't believe I was still alive! They removed most of my stomach, all my small intestines and 8 inches of large intestines! It had been spilling into my abdomen for months! He saved my life! So, I hear horrible people say I "took the easy was out to lose weight" and I get really irritated! I don't recommend 6 car pile-ups on icy highway overpasses, then and being extracted from a state troopers car when the tow truck smashes you into the wrecked vehicles..... yeah, not the weight loss plan I'd recommend to anyone!

I don’t know who did those surgeries or where they were done, but I’m Mexican and have had the surgeries (as many of friends and family members) and everyone is more than okay. Just because a couple of Americans had bad experiences during the Bariatrics surgeries, doesn’t mean we have bad surgeons. You have to do research on the doctor and the hospital the surgery is going to take place at.

I had WLS 3 yers ago in Mexico. My surgeon was excellent. I had absolutely no problem, but I did my homework. Lots of it. I did NOT work through recruiters here in the states. Yep, it's about 1/3 the cost. The bariatric surgeons in the states are going to love this.

There’s a reason bariatric programs are rigorous….it’s a big deal. If you’re not willing to commit to a program then WLS isn’t for you. It’s not just about the surgery, post op education is so important to prepare for.

Even here in the States, this can really happen. I am RN for a long time and I’ve seen the complications with these kind of procedures. And these are done in the US. Usually it happens 5-10 years after....

Would love to know the doctors... I’m researching this because i want it.. the sleeve has little percentage of side effects. It’s all enclusive in Mexico $4500 VS $9-$12k in US.

I have friends who travel to Mexico when they need anything significant done medically. They are quite happy. Last year I was in the hospital for four days. I had kidney stones removed and an x-ray found a mass. So they did an MRI and a few other tests then the very minor surgery to remove the stones. I think it involved a laser. I was billed over $65,000 for the hospital stay. Add to that the ambulance ride, bill from the urologist, bill from the radiologists, bills for food service, entertainment (tv), telephone ( I never used since I have my own) and too many other things, it added up to over $100k. I'm 62 years old and can't afford healthcare so how do they think I'm going to afford a bill like that? I later found out that first class flight to Mexico City, first class hotel, hospital stay, 24 hour private nurse, all the same tests and procedures would have added up to roughly $12k-$15k. My one friend went there for a surgery that would have cost $20,000 in the U.S. and got it done in Mexico City for $4000 and his surgeon went to Harvard. Everything from the difference in wages and salaries to lower cost of insurance to lower expenses in various aspects of the medical industry all contribute. If the auto industry was run like the medical industry cars would cost $1m each, gas prices would be $100 a gallon and car insurance would be $50k a year.

this is why we stopped doing the band surgery years ago in Sweden! there are to much complications with that surgery no matter which country you get the surgery in!

My mother got gastric sleeve surgery in Tijuana, Mexico. She lost over 100 pounds. The surgery was fine, but what wasn't fine was my mother's new mentality. She's incredibly selfish and an alcoholic now. I truly believe losing that much weight causes some sort of mental imbalance. It's very sad, because I don't even know my mom anymore.

My wife of 20 years got weight loss surgery in America..her side effect was she was a good wife and mother but soon as she skimmed down she cheated for years and left me for a body builder with money they fail to tell you that 94 percent of women who got the surgery leave there husbands..they say it’s new confidence ..not true..confidence isn’t being a home wrecker..she also destroyed two other marriages in process..be yourself and do the work yourselves ..it’s only way..of course wokeness praises these weak harlots..by the way she got the house kids and cats..I work hard and renting again and lost everything

People die in the US from bypass surgery too. All Drs are not skilled. Also patients need to be screened carefully before these procedures.

It's because they didn't need it. That's why insurance wouldn't pay for it. They weren't morbidly obese, they were just fat (and I say that as a fat guy).

I had a gastric sleeve in 2010, in Sweden. If the information that is available today had been available then, I would NEVER have had the surgery. My complications are not life threatening, yet, but there isn't really a quality of life. It's easy for people to say that you should have done your research, but there was no information to be found. I read everything I could find in English, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and German. The only complications talked about were death in the operating room, ileus that would probably be quite easy to treat, and likely having to take supplements for the remainder of your life. These surgeries are butchering a fully functioning organ, making it impossible for it to do its vital work. It will eventually wreak havoc with your whole body and the doctors won't help you, because what is wrong won't show a simple blood test. Everything is normal, so you're fine. It's probably just in your head...
