The flying v was first introduced in 1958 and lasted until 1959. These were Korina bodies with a very futuristic design. Shipping ledgers state there were only 98 original 50s Vs made. There were a few custom order from 1960-1964, but Gibson didn't toy with the idea of reissuing them until 1966 when another korina version was made as well as a new one which would later be deemed the "67 V."
Thanks to people like Jimi Hendrix and Kirk Hammett of Metallica and many others, 60s and 70s flying Vs have quite a stellar reputation. In fact, kirk's famous black flying v is from 1979 just like the one in this video.
What are the differences between a 70s and 60s V? There are actually quite a few minor differences, but the biggest ones to know and the original 60s were one piece bodies and necks with a tremolo unit on them.
The 70s Flying Vs are quite magical. They are very resonant and they play great. They are also very light weight. I highly recommend these guitars.

Love the volute and the sunburst finish on the back and neck too. I remember checking out cherry sunburst LPs in the early 70s and they were like that but those nice features disappeared when I bought one in '77.

My old band mate's late 70's Flying V was light and resonant and you could feel the string vibration throughout the guitar. My favorite thing about it was the slightly chunky C-shaped neck and the action though. It felt like you were playing a laser guided missile, everything was so precise and perfect. Plus you could beat the piss outta the thing and it never went outta tune.

Gibson is so out of whack even with new management. Their new “70’s V” is just a disgrace.
@TheJTM45
@TheJTM45 3 жыл бұрын
@@ITSHAA-yn5zc I absolutely couldn’t agree more with this comment! They make a ‘70s V’ and omit the most important ( in my opinion) feature of a 1970’s Gibson Flying V, the HEADSTOCK SHAPE!!! It’s an insult in my opinion! It just rubs it in in the fact that they made what appears to be ( Ive never played one sadly) a very good, extremely close re-issue 70s V for the Japanese market. So why the f**k couldn’t they be bothered to make a ‘70s V’ that actually looks like a real 70s V ? It’s almost like they’re purposely taking the piss out of their customers! I’m the proud and extremely happy owner of a white ‘79 Gibson V and I absolutely LOVE the thing!!! It’s a truly fantastic guitar. The only thing that lets it down slightly are the tuners. They don’t hold the tuning that well, particularly the G string tuner. I’m considering getting a set of new Kluson ‘vintage style’ locking tuners for it. They appear to have exactly the same footprint so there’s no worry about having to modify the guitar to fit them. While they’re not identical by any means they do sell a chrome tulip set of replacement tuner buttons which look pretty similar to the originals and I would imagine they’ll perform fantastically! Mine still has the original t-top pickups which sound great and also has the original electronics and wiring. Despite the misconception (by people who usually haven’t played one!) that these Vs will be really difficult to play sitting down that couldn’t be any less accurate. Positioned correctly they are pretty much the perfect guitar for practice playing sitting down. Overall just tremendous guitars!

I am a V player, and I'm glad you did this video. I've held and played a 1975 Flying signed by Frank Black of The Pixies. Wonderful sounding and feeling guitar. I play a 2008 Faded Cherry Gibson V and I tell ya, this thing DOES resonate. A luthier working on it commented to me afterward how great it vibrates in the hands, showing that it's really good quality mahogany. It vibrates up the neck freely, and it's gonna resonate even more freely when I put lighter tuners on it soon. I HIGHLY recommend the Faded V's. The finish does wear, but it wears BEAUTIFULLY. This is my main guitar, and I couldn't be prouder of that. I recommend you take the tuner off the headstock when you demonstrate how a guitar sounds Trogly. It dampens the vibration of the guitar's headstock

Funny you're talking about headstock repairs. Anyone that knows the old ''gear trader" store from Huntington Beach would be familiar with Big Mike. He had some beautiful equipment, couple/few Marshall heads from the 70s and the tall Jimi Hendrix basket-weave cabinets, w/ greens and 30 watt black backs. I just mention to give an idea his stuff was very nice, and extremely well cared for even though he played regularly. His main guitar was what you're holding, basically they look like twins. I had never really cared about Vs, until playing his and I was immediately sold. Extremely resonant, like sg's, & LP special.... Anyway, Eddie's guitar tech, Matt used to come in, and he saw Mike's V on a stand and went over and picked it up, played it and remarked how great it was, put it back on the stand and I don't remember if he tripped on the cord, or just thought it was better laid than it was, but as I'm sure you know by now Boom! Snapped right under the truss rod cover, actually the two pieces hung together by the screws. It looked so sad, so, like a broken neck chicken, or maybe a swan, they seem a little more graceful. I think Mike was in shock because he's a pretty vocal Guy usually, and he said nothing. Matt on the other hand was as you'd imagine, astonished apologetic, somewhat incredulous as to how, being Van Halen's guitar tech, he may have done that move of replacing a guitar on a stand more than any ten of us. True to fashion of a professional Road Dog, manager, and if I remember right he even had a partner in an amp building company, he said something to the tune of do u have a case let me take care of this. I can't remember if he took it to Gibson, or an ex head of wood working from Gibson, but when it returned, and pretty quickly, we were hard-pressed to even see the repair. Man the memories from that store... One night I actually found complete books of gold inside an old Hammond organ.

Ahhh, the axe I absolutely LUSTED for when I was a teen in the late 70s...these badboys were metal af! I wound up "settling" for a V made by some tiny little known company who made decent copies of great guitars...maybe you've heard of them? It's a Hamer Vector, made in the USA in 1982, and is to date the most amazing guitar I've ever laid hands on. To make the story even better, it was a custom order (cream white, not a stock color for '82) that developed cracks and checking, so the dude who originally ordered this $1000+ axe decided it was junk and sold it to me for $225 in 1986. SCOOOOOOOOOOOORE! It's one of two "NEVER gonna sell" guitars that I own!

Btw, for those who missed the joke, I'm being totally facetious with the "maybe you've heard of them" thing...I wasn't entirely sure at the time how amazing Hamers were, but I *did* know that I got a hell of a lot of guitar for the money!

Those late 70's V's were perfect. The action was astonishingly low yet never fretted out or any of the other unwanted effects of such low action. Never really seen or played anything as well rounded a 2 humbucker electric guitar since. One of the ultra rare guitars that are just put together so well as regular production they near "played themselves". The medallion V's medallion was to commemorate the Olympics? Er…..oooookay. Awesome axes for sure! Always wanted one of the late 70's V's as in this upload or a Korina original copy. Finding legit versions of either has become pretty difficult.

Jaw. Iiterally. Drops. I’ve always loved tobacco bursts, I never understood why Fender loves pushing Sunbursts instead of tobacco burst. They are so beautiful. I don’t even like Vs but this is insanely pretty.

What amp are you playing through, the ZZ top, and Randy riffs you played when it first got dirty sounded delicious. I love it's. Another fella on this thread wrote asking how this 79 compared with the modern Dean ml series? I would be curious as well.

@@ScottGreenMusic yeah I think I heard that somewhere before. Just seeing one of these guitars just reminds me of when I was first learning how to play in the early 80s when I was watching dudes like Judas Priest and all the NWOBHM bands all seem to be playing flying V's at the time..lol actually love these guitars man they are great playing and sounding guitars. I owned one years ago like an idiot I traded it away and I miss it to this day it's been 20 years.

Thank you. I had no idea that my perfect blonde '77 V was worth that kind of money. I may quit taking it to gigs. I've owned it since 1980 & would be crushed if anything happened to it. Tuners switched to Grovers before I got it. One more thing, to sit & play these is simple. You just place your upper right leg into the back notch on the guitar. It will sit in perfect playing position & never move an inch. Hilarious!

I owned the 1980 “the V” tobacco sunburst. bound body. I never liked the way the neck was attached at the body. It sits up off the body a about half an inch which makes playing on the upper frets a pain. You are really holding on to a chunk of wood at that point. You should show the difference between a 70’s V and the 60’s V where the fretboard comes right down on the body the way it should. I did play the hell outta that V though and sold it for the same price I bought new and it was a road warrior.
