I worked as a mechanic at a Lincoln/Mercury Dealership and a Ford Dealership owned by the same person in the 1980's. There was definitely a noticeable difference between the Lincoln customers and the Ford customers. The Lincoln customers would complain about noises that most people could not perceive. Several times we "solved" problems by finding and "fixing" a problem that did not actually exist (at no charge to the customer). I guess it is kind of like the placebo effect. I remember one lady complaining that her Town Car just started making a strange noise. It turned out to be wind noise from the mirrors, but she was unconvinced. We ended up taking off the power mirrors and taping over the holes in the door to convince her that it was the mirrors.

As much as people LOVE to rag on Genesis/Hyundai/Kia because of engine failures, but in reality if you look at what engines are failing, you'll see it's predominantly the 2.0L and 2.4L engines. I'm on my second Tucson (lost first one in car accident) and that thing has been absolutely SOLID. 73k miles (bought at 26k), and I just replaced the DCT transmission fluid yesterday. In fact it's scary that all I've done for maintenance is oil changes, air filters, and a top-off of my coolant. Zero engine issues, zero transmission issues. My previous one was the same way, although it did have one problem with an airbag light that was traced to a broken or loose connection on the passenger side front airbag. Other than that, no issues on either. It also helps that I have grown as a car enthusiast and reviewer myself, and found the Gamma 1.6T G4FJ engine is one of the most reliable Hyundai engines in production, and the two I've owned prove that claim is correct.

Even the most problematic vehicle manufacturer has reliable vehicles. You may have enjoyed excellent reliability with the two you purchased but that may not reflect the experiences of many thousands of others. @LebronPhoto1 this is the major issue with consumer reports. There's no way to know whether or not the person submitting the data has an issue because of a legit fault of the manufacturer, or the person has a lack of understanding of how the related system should work. I own a 2020 Ram Warlock and I think the reason it has a low rating is some of the buold quality. As the team noted reliability is more than just powertrain for this survey. I've had 0 issues with the powertrain but the fender flares started to peel which is common. I've also heard of the powder coating coming off the steel bumpers. It's isn't a driving problem but is annoying and you have to take it in to get fixed if you care. I think the vehicle is dead reliable so the rating isn't super accurate.

Consumer Reports reliability ratings are just one tool in the toolbox. If I were a car manufacturer I would hate to have my reliability rating partially determined by persons who neglect to perform necessary maintenance. I do find the CR ratings more valuable than JD Power, which seem focused on more initial reliability.

I had electrical issues with my '13 JKU in under 100mi on the odometer. I was on the phone with Jeep talking to them to start the lemon when they begged me to take it to another dealer. Somehow that dealer had seen similar issues with a loosely crimped wire and I never had an issue with that again. Toward the end of my time with the Jeep the ECU failed causing a misfire. This was an experience that has taught me to never give a dealer more than 2 chances to fix the same problem. Never EVER accept an extended warranty with any limits on where you can take it. When something as BASIC as an ECU fails you need to lose that vehicle immediately. Sold the Jeep bought a ZR2 and haven't looked back.

I think it very much matters who the owner base is and who the car was engineered for. A rock crawl enthusiast will probably beat up and find a typical compact crossover unreliable when it can't handle the abuse, whereas someone who puts a lot of highway miles on their cars might hit the point where stuff wears out early on the most capable rock crawlers. "Experienced" folks who just want to get from A to B will find excessive/clunky(or even just advanced) tech and features as unreliable if they get lost in screens etc. I imagine once the tech in the Lincolns becomes more common and the user base adapts over time to using that type of tech, the number of poor reliability reports will fall.

I think sort of on track that it's the consumers surveyed for that brand, as if I pay for a Lincoln over a comparable Ford, I expect it to be better, to have a higher standard and it really isn't better put together, just nicer materials
@rayrussell6258
@rayrussell6258 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattlimberg5763 More likely it is the advancing age of the base of customers who can afford the price of a luxury brand that causes negative feedback. Remember this for future, Consumers Report does not have objective, real industry quality data, they only have subjective responses from their members. I'm nearing 70, and if I was given a survey to complete from CR, I'd complain about all the unnecessary buttons I face on dashboards, and the stupid touch screens that I don't need. But I think the car itself performs flawlessly, I've had not a single warranty repair, and would buy another. Meantime, CR would report my quality score for the brand as LOW, because I reported my negative "opinion" about the buttons and touch screen.
@432Point
@432Point 2 жыл бұрын
This is perhaps why CR is biased. It’s driven by their membership who bought that car perhaps with a biased. Toyota v Ford is a conservative company and a company trying to attack every angle. Also, where a car lives and who drives it plays a part. Live in the rust belt, probably will have issues with suspension. Chrysler blew CR off decades ago bc it can push biased opinions. TFL called out Mini…as did Chrysler.

Except Lincolns unreliability doesn’t just stop at the infotainment screen like y’all are blindly insinuating. This ain’t just about no learning curves for touchscreens. When Lincoln tech becomes more common? What is that even supposed to mean? What groundbreaking technology does Lincoln infotainment systems have that makes them so unreliable compared to infotainment systems from competitors? Or is it y’all are just pulling out a bunch of excuses for Lincoln being dead last in reliability? 😂
@markcoopers1930
@markcoopers1930 2 жыл бұрын
@@mybro727 We aren't saying that the tech is groundbreaking, we're saying that the driver base surveyed probably still prefer AM radio and crank windows. You can look on the consumer reports profile that they have for Lincoln on their site. They did show trouble reported with the transmission, that is true. But the only other areas where reliability is poor are with the categories of "in car electronics" (infotainment and dash) "power systems" which are controls for cruise control and wipers and climate, and "body integrity" which covers things like creaks and wind noise. All things that some demographics seem to be more sensitive to and/or have more trouble understanding than others. Keep in mind consumer reports use mostly survey data for their reliability, and they even show quotes from the people the survey. Many come off as someone not understanding how to use a system. The other point is that current reliability is based on the year they tested. The Lincoln aviator was tested by them in 2020, the redesign year which we all know is the one that is likely to have bugs to work out, and they plainly state that current reliability is partially based on the 2020 year. It's worth noting the CR road test was very favorable for the Aviator, and found very little road or wind noise, which contradicts their survey data. Another indication that we may not be able to trust the survey base, and would have to see for ourselves.

Buicks are just as high tech as Lincolns, yet the reliability is night and day. Fords are just as junk. The Lincoln Aviator was bought back from so many customers, one lady referred to her Aviator as a “demon.” The Ford Explorer experienced the same recalls and botched launch riddled with issues. Absolutely *delusional* to say there’s a “wide difference in quality perception with it’s Ford cousins”. Get real folks. The Lincolns are unreliable _because_ they’re Fords.

My data point for what it’s worth. Have been a CR subscriber since my twenties. I consistently fill out the surveys as objectively as I can. I have had six Toyota’s With more than 1,000,000 combined km across the six. 99 Tercel, 09 matrix, 13 Tacoma, 18 corolla, 16 highlandeR (still have, zero issues, ICE, tows our 4500 lb trailer), 21 Rav4. To date, we lost a bearing in the Tacoma’s AC compresseR as where we live the selector is always on defrost (with ac) so it’s going all year, And the 09 matrix chucked two charcoal canisters. That’s it. Had a 11 forester which was a nightmare to 115000 km... when we dropped it for the HL it was drinking 2L of oil every 3000 km. And had a 08 f150 (last year for that gen) and it was a nightmare (bought secondhand with 60000 km, sold at 70000 after having to do repairs every month on drivetrain - suspension). Cr isn’t perfect. But Toyota hasn’t let me down to date, but I’m just one data point . I worry about their turbo hybrids now.

Part of the equation is people's perception comes into play. People buy a Toyota because they think it's more reliable.....so, they are going to say it's reliable no matter water... and/or defend their purchase. If that same person buys a Jeep, which they think is unreliable, then they are going to complain about anything that is wrong with it.

When QDR is in the DNA, the culture at that company revolves around making the best possible car and even they will only achieve 75/100 on a good day. the removal of the jeep branding from the wagoneer because of the enormous expense is a bad way to deal with what should be a good problem, heading up-market. but the wagoneer competes basically HAD to compete in the navigator/escalade class because it is a jeep, and it was always going to cost heaps more than a suburban or a expedition because it was going to have to be "trail-rated". it's the same story with all jeeps, if you're going to force them to be 10k more than competition, you might as well take them to the luxury segment.

Honda Pilot/Acura MDX, .... it's cost effective to take a basic platform and add some features and higher level interiors and you have a different vehicle to sell. Good review and comments! Really enjoyed it. Funny thing Buick is up there but most of them are made in China and Taiwan. Only Buick made and engineered here is the Enclave. Honda is more "American content" by far, over 90% US content vs Buick...which is made and designed mostly overseas .... Sad. Roman... I agree with you. If the computer only works half the time, would they be upset if I sent payment half the time? 3) Elon Musk is NOT an automaker. The Buick is the most reliable domestic brand only because buyers of Buicks are typically older (as in their 70s) retired people who just don’t drive very far in a given year. This is why for decades now Buick has been the highest rated domestic brand. GM knows this and takes care to not overcomplicate the entertainment and other control and instrumentation systems in these cars in the U.S. market so as not to cause confusion for older drivers. However, Buicks are built on the same assembly lines as other GM vehicles and should, as a result, be of similar quality. Please note that I am not disparaging seniors as I am one myself, but just stating the obvious. Prior to retirement I drove over 30k miles per year and my old commuter car, a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, has 325k miles on it. Now I drive less than 5k miles per year, so naturally less repairs are needed on any vehicle I drive. Consumer Reports needs to be clearer regarding the demographics from which they derive their survey results, as different vehicles are typically driven by people of differing age groups and in different ways. Thus, survey results automatically contain biases and this impacts the reported performance and reliability of the vehicles. Some of Consumer Reports ratings just don’t make sense on a macro level. For example the Fords and Lincoln’s are built in the same factories by the same employees, and except for trim pieces and some electronics, use parts from the same suppliers. Thus, it is not logical for the Fords to be rated significantly higher than the Lincoln’s, which are in last place.

Addressing the idea of Acura being a different badge on a Honda: WRONG. I had a 1996 Acura 2.5 TL. It had a superficial resemblance to a Civic of that era. But it weighed TWO TONS and most of the weight was very well chosen. The 2.5 was a five cylinder purely from Acura, could cruise at 27 mpg but when punched a whole different set of intake passages etc. kicked in and it acted like a 5 liter V8. It was a blast. And when I was driving it in 2016, 20 years old, the original transmission was still perfect (fluid and filter changed once), and so was the HVAC system. And the suspension and joints and brakes were way heavier duty. My Nissan Sentra B14, which I liked a lot, went through multiple sets of ball joints commuting into Tulsa on some badly maintained roads. But the Acura over a roughly equal time, only one set. It is much heavier duty while performing well. Today's Acura TLX is similar in basic approach: a two ton plus compact luxury sedan with either 272 or 355 hp, similar fuel efficiency to my 1996, and massive but very compliant suspension and undercarriage. If I were buying a new car tomorrow, I would seriously consider it.

From the cars/trucks we owned, the most reliable and the least costly to maintain car/truck was our 2010 Toyota Prius. Nothing broke on that car for 150,000 miles. We even did not replace the brakes. But that car was only good for city driving. I was very miserable on long trips. I could not stand it after 2 hours of driving. As a result of that experience, I would never buy a Prius or hybrids that use a similar setup as the Prius has, mainly because of the droning sound. I do no want to own a car with CVT as well. All other cars we owned were reliable too, except for our first car -- 1994 Ford Taurus. Our 2014 Honda Odyssey was reliable, a lot of rattling noise though, but nothing really major -- one ignition coil and the solenoid valve were replaced. No other issues for 125,000 miles. Our 2007 Suburban had only one issue, a little part related to the emission system broke down because of dirt buildup, which was about $40, and it took me 5 minutes to replace it. Not bad for an American brand. I sold it when the SUV was 125,000 miles and it still remains one of my wife's favorite vehicle we have ever owned. The least reliable cars I owned were two Lincolns and one Ford, but nothing major for DIYers. These three cars were constantly braking down. That is why I said to my wife if I ever consider to buy a Ford/Lincoln again, she should remind me as kicking me in the b**t not to do it. No matter what Ford does, they have lost me as customer, period. Now, we have a 2021 Tundra, and finally, I can say that I have a Toyota, which I really like how it rides and it is still a very reliable vehicle.

When I saw your video about getting the TESLA fixed I remember thinking that it had horrible build quality.

I’m guessing the problem with the new wranglers isn’t so much the wrangler but more the new 392, 4xE, 2.0… all the new engines that they’re putting in the jeep to fight the bronco. I think that’s probably a big part of the unreliability

You mentioned quite a few of vehicles from the middle tier but nothing about Ford. Would have loved to hear some of those.
