I would've absolutely bought the M1 iMac in a heartbeat if there was a 27" option for extra $200 or something like that, it would've been a dope machine, but a 23.5" display is a bit too small for my liking, despite the quality of the display being pretty great.

Apple for sure already had the Studio Display in mind last year. If they also released a 27" iMac with the exact same screen speakers mic and camera, plus keyboard & mouse, AND A COMPUTER INSIDE for the same price… Then people would realize how overpriced it is 🤡

@@chidorirasenganz People asked for that in 2017, now it’s brand new and already outdated ! Even MacBooks have better screens 🤷‍♂️ The Studio Display is just an easy 5-in-1 solution for laptop users, with basic technology, no adjustable height and large bezels… Should be $1099 without the A13 chip, and a normal 1080p (lol) camera instead of the always cropped ultra wide one.
@chidorirasenganz
@chidorirasenganz 2 жыл бұрын
@@joffrey6831 It takes time to develop new products. Plus it wasn’t a concern until 2018-2019 during which they were working on the apple silicon transition. What 5k display can you get for 1099$? The ultrafine lg is 1300 and made of creaky plastic with worse speakers, cameras etc The Macbooks only have better contrast. They are inferior in size, resolution and brightness. The monitor needs a processor so the a13 is fine. It would be dumb to use anything older than that. Center stage is awesome and it doesn’t require you to use place your monitor in a certain angle to use your webcam. Plus the changing the framing when other people enter the frame.

@joffrey6831 2 жыл бұрын
@@chidorirasenganz You think Apple can’t develop a monitor while working on Apple Silicon ? At least you agree it’s 3 years too late… Because there is no other option doesn’t mean it’s a good deal 🙄 You’re right about the LG Ultrafine costing $1299… in 2019. MacBooks screens have more than higher contrast : - can be set to 1000 nits (so not at all inferior in brightness) - deep blacks with mini-leds - 120Hz - thin bezels Same pixel density, just smaller screen for obvious reason. No one care what chip is inside a monitor. Apple marketed the A13 inside like it was revolutionary 😱 Yet you can’t even use Center Stage on a Windows machine (meaning MacOS could handle it), and it doesn’t even support AirPlay !! Center Stage on a desktop computer will only be useful 1% of the time anyway, not worth being stuck with a cropped image.

I'm very happy with the M1 iMac I bought used. It took a few patient weeks (and a few missed opportunities) before I bought the one I did, one of the rarer 16GB models with the 8-core GPU and 512GB SSD for just $1350 after shipping. Beautiful machine, though it's too bad I can't see the deep blue part of it where I set it up.

Speaking of distraction, that white bezel draws attention away from the screen. If they were to make the 24” iMac an M2 in space grey and black bezels, best believe I would be in the market for that (apple logo or not). Cheers!

I *did* get the 21” iMac, many years ago, maybe about a year after it first came out. I opted for the 16GB RAM, 512GB version mainly because the video editing software I planned to run recommended 16GB; it was also the first time I every used a macOS machine. I eventually replaced it because Apple stopped supporting that model with its macOS updates, replacing it with a Dell workstation that I bought on sale, which was a mistake because the chipset was frustrating when it came to WIN10 updates, and so I got the 24” M1 iMac in blue, 16GB RAM and 1TB drive. I’m really happy with it as a home workstation. I opted for this size because I find 27” was really too big for my home office. I have one of those wooden DIY home station units that came out in the 1990s back when everyone was still using CRT terminals for monitors, and the cubbyhole space allotted for a monitor was just too small for a 27” monitor size.

I have a 2019 21.5" iMac that I bought as an upgraded refurb from OWC in August 2020. With 32gb of RAM and a 2tb OWC SSD, it is simply amazing for everything I do with it. It is the perfect size for my desk, I don't need a 27" 5k display. You know one of the things I like the best about it? Its simple 3.6GHz 4-core i3 without Turbo Boost, which means I have never heard a fan without pressing my ear against the case and the thing barely feels warm even after hours of heavy use. And I can boot into Mojave so I can use old, never-upgraded/abandoned 32-bit applications when I want to. I don't edit videos for a living so rendering speed isn't a major issue for me. I am not playing the hottest new game that was released last week so the 2gb Radeon 555x doesn't bother me at all. OWC still sells these upgraded refurbs, if you just do "general computing" stuff, this thing is a great choice.

One added benefit of the Intel chip is that it can run Windows inside Bootcamp, which is currently not possible with an M1 Mac. You can run Windows in virtualization on a M1, but for some, that just isn’t like running Windows natively.

That’s true and that’s a big reason why sometimes I choose to bring my 2016 MacBook Pro instead of my M1 Macbook Air. That being said when I’m back at my desk I have an i7-4770k desktop to compensate for my Windows needs. Windows just does screen and computer audio captures so easily while MacOS requires complicated 3rd party plugins. Oh and my decade old Windows PC still games a lot better than M1, just that it can’t keep up with productivity work.

I'm going to add another underrated one - the M1 mini. I picked it and an M1 air up at launch and my Mini does the "heavy lifting" - with handoff, I can set up a project on my M1 Air, and then hand it off to my mini to be rendered down to soup stock. Yeah, for faster rendering you should absolutely get the 16gb ram mini variant, but if you're setting up a project and leaving it to render undisturbed, it doesn't make much of a difference.

The 2019 21.5" 4K iMac is it! It's taken me time (years) to decide to split up what I do with my computers (music recording/production, photo and video editing) into 2 computers. For the DAW I use (Studio One) and third party plugins, even with more workability with M1's now, music software companies tend to take much more time to adjust and conform to new cpu's and operating systems. Probably partly because musicians/recording engineers and producers also like what they like and if it works, they won't fix it or change it for decades until it just won't work anymore. If only the price of CPU's would come down a little...

When the M1 iMac first came out I was pretty meh about the next gen. Why on earth would I step down from a 27 inch 5k display to a 24 and have fewer IO ports? (And pay a bunch of money to basically downgrade to a lesser system.) Nope I went the other way. I went out and bought a faster CPU, more ram and trashed the Fusion Drive for a sexy new NVME SSD. It was so gratifying when you posted the Cinebench results comparing the i9 with the base M1 processor. In your words, "It slaps."

I had thought seriously about buying a reburbished M1 iMac instead, but if I had, I would have wanted the VESA-mount version which wasn't offered as a refurb. I have to admit, it was a close call and I still wonder what it would've been like to buy a loaded refub iMac instead. I had no idea how upgradeable the final-generation Intel iMac was. That's interesting, but if I could go back in time I would definitely stick with Apple Silicon.

Since my wife needed it for our design business (Flavor Graphics), it needed to not have any compatibility issues that early M1 platforms were having. So far, it's served her well, and it's hard to beat the price-to-performance.

I get why people miss the 27” iMac, but I can also see why an all-in-one desktop is becoming a niche product these days, in a sea of MacBooks and iPads - especially with the new Mac Studio taking the performance crown, and the budget Mac mini positioned as the most affordable entry point into macOS. But for the vast majority of desktop computing use cases, you just can’t beat the 24” M1 iMac. It‘s laptop simplicity in a desktop form factor, and that’s what I love about it.

I think the best deal is really a refurb 202 27 iMac. You can get the for good deals and can upgrade the ram to 128gb whenever you want. There are more ports, the screen is bigger and higher resolution, and performance is basically the same as the M1 chips. The newer M2 chips beat it, but those computers all cost a lot more once you add getting a bigger display etc

I've had the M1 iMac since launch, and it was a great replacement for my Mac Air. Now I don't need a second screen, and the sound is amazing. I went for the high tier model, and I do not regret it. Spend a lot of time using my computer, so money well spent. Would highly recommend this machine!

ok, Luke calm down. I have to admit your are absolutely right. If I needed a desktop computer I would definitely buy one of these things (or have a look at the 27" version) and send you a thank you note later for the advice. My MacBook and me are perfectly happy together.

I have just updated my Late 2009 21.5" iMac that is still going (somewhat slow 4GB ram) just couldn't update the operating version to take advantages of the latest Photoshop & Lightroom functions or MS Office. Loving my new 24" M1 iMac 16GB ram 1TB hard drive and the full Touch ID keyboard with numeral keys with 2nd 24" display attached. Now you can't tell me you would find a 2009 PC still going without having ANYTHING being done to it from new.

If they would both last 5 or more years without issues and still be supported by Apple like previous iMacs it is a very good deal. I was surprised to see that Apple is still supporting the 2015 iMac. That is a long time to have a Mac that is up to date and fast enough to do most of what you need. Great videos, keep up the good work.

I have the basic m1 imac. It is great for photographers and home office, very reliable. Great screen, takes little space on the desk, fluent working in lightroom and photoshop. An external ssd is necessary for bigger libraries. I just hate that mouse :) usb ports could be much faster, but it is fine for photo editing.

Between the core i9 and M1, i would go with the i9. This way all of my legacy apps would work without waiting on apple silicon versions of the apps to be made available. When the hardware eventually is forced into obsolescence by Apple, I could install any number of Linux distros and breathe new life into the hardware.

I’m an old school Mac guy, started on the original ‘84 128k, been with Apple my whole computing life, was an Apple Authorized tech for at least a decade (lapsed due to the ‘08 crash :( ) but I’m back in the repair biz at a local independent Mac shop… it’s good to be home :) I went with a 27” 3.2 i5 (late ‘15) just because of the upgradability, I’m planning on maxing the Ram, and hard drives (it’s a Fusion model), I have access to an i7 3.5 CPU, and maybe even a Xeon from a scrap Pro we’re parting down… I’m considering picking up another cheap host ‘tapered edge’ iMac to try some hot rodding on (Xeon swap, max the Ram and hard drive) Looking at the iFixit tear down on the M1 iMac, the thing is basically an iPad on a stand, the actual computer hardware is all in the ‘chin’, upgradability is almost nonexistent.

The DYI’r in me is suffering…at 63 my eyes are fading, macular degeneration, so I’d have to go the more pragmatic route of grabbing the M1 and watch your videos to vicariously appease my desire to upgrade. The 24” screen size would be a plus too. TY😵‍💫

The M1 iMac is a great value…the “issue” is that most users are looking for laptops rather than desktops. I agree that the $200 upgrade from the base model is worth the money. Upgrading the CPU memory and storage on that 2019 21.5” iMac is also an intriguing option. An i9-9900 CPU, 16GB-32GB RAM, and for some users, larger SSD makes it a very solid option.

I upgraded to a 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM on my 21.5 4k iMac 2019 model. Finally it is now a really sweet machine. Looking forward to upgrading the CPU but I can only find 'K' CPUs at a decent price. It's my understanding that the 'K' CPUs are not recommended for the 2019 iMacs because of heat dissipation.

My M1 Mac-Mini has 2 32" displays on them and that alone precludes me right now on getting the NEw M1 iMac. In a few years I might get one more for nostalgia than use. Still love the colors and new look, but as some have said a base model 27" would be a better size now! Of course, Apple has discontinued their initial 27' so... Yeah!
