6 ай бұрынThe Minnesota Timberwolves are the BEST DEFENSE IN THE NBA to start the season, due in large part to Rudy Gobert returning to the DPOY-caliber form that we saw him reach with the Utah Jazz.
But even outside of just Gobert's defensive return to form, the emergence of Jaden McDaniels as one of the best defenders in the entire league and Anthony Edwards finally taking that leap defensively has catapulted them into a defensive juggernaut. The Timberwolves defense is what really sets them apart from the rest of the NBA right now.
Last year, they the Timberwolves had to navigate the injury to Karl-Anthony Towns, the Mike Conley trade, and various injuries near the postseason to Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid.

Gobert actually now has competent perimeter defenders on his team, unlike the Jazz, especially during that Clippers-Jazz series in 2021.

Short term memory is really affecting these people. Rudy won 3 DPOY for being this exact same defender. The only difference is that the Jazz never had a McDaniels or even an Ant level defender, let alone both of them. And that doesn't even include NAW, Kat (whose playing amazing D so far), and Slowmo

In jazz that’s not his problem. There were no wings defenders, n no defense rotation. n the coach he no idea how to protect gobert, keep him in the rim.

A lot of people have been knocking KAT for "regressing" or "fading" so far this season. To me, it seems like he's taking a backseat to allow the team to flourish. Yes, he's the franchise player, but if taking a reduced role is working, who is he to get in the way of that?

He is averaging 23/11. Playing great defense (the best of his career) and is a key role player in the league's best defense. Can heat up at a moment's notice on a team without many great shooters. What else could we ask for? IMO, he's not fading, he's finding himself in his new #2 role on a true contending team.

Offensively he's had some struggles finding his rhythm but as a Wolves fan the most impressive thing so far to me has been his defense. KAT has never been a defense first guy but the level of consistent effort he's been putting in on that end this year has been great to see. Actually did quite well defending Jokic when we played the Nuggets.

Since their inception, I’ve been a Twolves fan and watch and listen to a lot of content. I’ve never watched one of Alex’s analysis of teams and he did one of the best jobs of explaining why the Wolves defense has been so dominant this season. Jaden McDaniels is also one of the primary reason the Wolves defense has been solid. He’s often given the assignment of defending opposing teams top offensive wing player. I’m estimating the Wolves will finish in either the 3rd of 4th spot in the Western Conference. However, if they can continue to be the best defense in the NBA, avoid significant injuries and improve offensively they could win the Western Conference. Now, if the reverse is true, they could end up winning fewer games.

Ooh a Gobert led team is good in defense? Especially when you have McDaniels and Edwards roaming the perimeter, and Naz Reid as a backup? Last year was a transition year. Nearly every player when traded to a new team won't fit in right away. Only superstars and plug and play players can seamlessly fit into new systems, like Lebron and Jrue. Others need time, like Gobert. I am so glad that the wolves are finally building chemistry.

Being part of a good team can bring out the best in guys. This looks to be just what Kat and Gobert needed. Some guys simply cannot take the pressure of being the #1 star and some live for it. This takes alot off of him/them. Along with a good chemistry, team work ethic, offensive and defensive side of the ball. Every player is buying in and actually improving individually but also as a team. I know alot of things have to go your way when winning a championship like attitudes, good or bad chemistry which also includes the coach, management, ownership and of course health but they seem to have all of this. At the moment this seems be something special.

Nice analysis. Still a small sample and we Wolves fans have basically seen it all. So we are a little bit cautious. Let me add Finch to the credits. God knows we've had some questionable coaches. And also Connelly. He got so much heat last year with the Gobert trade. I am also excited to see how Miller will develop. I know the process of grooming talents is long but IF he develops like we hope the prospect of having him, Ant, McDaniels and Gobert on the court is crazy

@@ekisola17 I’m a firm believer in KAT. He’s so talented that most things just become a question of effort with him and he’s definitely putting in effort! Also the “KAT is a bad defender” narrative should’ve died as soon as they stopped using him in drop exclusively. He’s been average at worst IMO. I’m excited how they’ll look like at the end of the season. If KAT consistently gets his 17/18 FGA on his regular 53/40/85 shooting splits with a bit more finesse to sell fouls (let’s be honest, he’s big and strong and gets fouled enough to easily average 7/8 FTA) wolves fans are in for a treat

I think the narrative that KAT is an all-around bad defender has been false for a while - he improved to about average once they stopped putting him in drop coverage (something he is indisputably bad at) and started using him as a high wall defender in a system that was predicated on disrupting and forcing turnovers. The problem with this is that it sacrificed a lot of rebounding, and could still give up big points at the rim if the other team had someone elite at driving to the basket, like Ja Morant. In addition to being in a better system now, and having a defender behind him to be a true rim protector, he's clearly put a lot of work into his defense this season. His presence along with Gobert means they match up extremely well against the Nuggets in particular. And it's always a good sign when you have a good matchup against the defending champs.

At the time that rudy gobert trade looked bad , but now a year later it's looking like a win. Last year was bad for the wolves , even though they made the playoffs, kat missed half of the season, when he came back they had no chemistry. The end of the year drama was real bad but now with everyone back i feel like they weathered all their adversities and got it all together for a deep run. This team has been together for 3 years now, with the addition of Gobert and conley. I one of the ones saying trade Kat but I mean honestly the wolves need his presence in the paint. Even if hes not scoring, he makes the wolves a long team that you cant score on. Wemby was forced to take a lot of outside shots against the wolves, he did get some points in the paint but it wasnt that easy. I think they finish at 3 seed this year but a real close 3rd seed. I think the west is going to be a tight fight throughout the season.

Gobert has been great defensively this year, last year he was washed but he had a back injury, excuse? Maybe. But I'm glad he took the worst trade in history narrative and is being elite defensively again. Still a bum on offense.
