A lot of cops are trained to do things like this. Which means it's not a problem with the cop, it's a fundamental problem with the system. Police officers are lead to believe that they can violate the US Constitution and not only is it ok for them to do so, it's part of their responsibility as a LEO. The solution is to end all forms of Immunity and start cracking down hard on every cop who violates a citizen's rights. The training WILL change because it will become far too expensive for it not to.

All cops act like this. You know what most people would do when this cop rolls up and tells you to leave? They get up and leave. Regardless of if they have a legal right to do so or not, most people just listen to whatever they say because they are cops. And this is why cops think they have more authority than they actually do. Since most people just kneel and lick their boots they expect everyone to do it. And anyone who challenges their authority is seen as breaking the law in their eyes when in reality, the cop is the one breaking the law. This is an issue with police all around the country.

I think this is an important point that NEEDS to be addressed. When the state has to pay people for damages in court cases, that money should not under any circumstance come from taxpayer money, it should come exclusively from the donations and other sources of revenue they have (because make no mistake, the city does have actually sources of revenue, not just tax dollars). It is fundamentally wrong to use taxpayer money to pay individuals or groups for damages caused by the government because that is not a "punishment," that is just a redistribution of tax funds which hurts their entire taxpayer population.

@@cmhsky Years ago during my criminal justice major it was a topic that Do people join the police because they feel comfortable with the strict and authoritarian nature of the job? OR do they get formed by the job into authoritarians because of all the crap they have to deal with everyday? 1) cops DO see an incredible amount of ...well Crap People and situations. They are lied to spit at, shot at, cursed at, maligned for just doing their job, and general shat upon for protecting law and order. It is no wonder that they would develop an attitude of hostility towards people outside their field. 2) Many of the police are prior service, which means they love and crave order and authority. Many are kids of cops or the military which can bring the same idea. 3) Neither of those is complete though and neither is why all police get to that stage. 4) This is a reason to try to understand and reform Policing in the US. We need to remove and replace this attitude with one of public service, and one that aims to protect the public as well as protect the law. So I would agree with you. There is far more to it than just that, but You are right, the first cop just wanted to deal with a "problem" and did not care about the constitution that he swore at least 1 oath to protect, and possibly 2 depending on the one he swore as a cop as well.

Try and make it make sense? If they catch anyone on disability in my state lifting more then 25 pounds, they will remove your disability benefits. I should be considered disabled, but I found the restrictions and hoops they make you jump through, not to be worth the effort. I broke 8 vertebrae in a car accident back in 2008 and suffered permanent nerve and spinal cord damage. I just work part time and run a tiny tea business on my family farm. Some days I can put 6-8 hours of hard work, while others I am unable to get out of bed. I barely get by and this guy gets to collect disability benefits and a cushy police salary. It makes me sick to my stomach that he’s allowed to receive such benefits when it’s clear he can work in full capacity as a police officer.

I had cops roll up their cars on the grass of a public park that was a 30 second walk from my house because I was sitting there in the evening. I needed space alone because a friend had just died and I wanted a quiet, outdoor space where I could sit with my thoughts away from my home and my housemate. Apparently a gazebo in a completely empty public park I was paying taxes on is forbidden. Neither cop even came out of their car to talk to me or see if I was okay. They just rolled up two cop cars over the park grass, and I walked back to my house in frustration. They didn't even roll down their windows to talk to me when I walked past their still-moving cars. They just made eye contact and I guess decided not to arrest me because I clearly wasn't homeless or dealing drugs. It was so surreal and disrespectful. Can't believe people can't just sit at a park if they want. Some free country we have here.

I went down to Mississippi after hurricane Katrina. The company that I was working for rented us a house. A small two bedroom ranch about a mile from the river. It was one of the few homes in the neighborhood that wasn’t destroyed by the flood wave. It was my brother in law, myself and four dudes from Michigan in the house. I’m a carpenter of everything from frame to finish. I ended up roofing the gazebo on the town common in ocean springs. Hahah I’m from Massachusetts and I had to come all the way down to Mississippi to have the honor of roofing the gazebo on the common! While I was in the process of getting the job done. A bunch of reporters and cameras and….holy cow!! The mayor! A very nice woman and some of her staff. She shook my hand and noticed that my accent was Boston. She then informed me that….y’all take care of this gazebo. It’s a genuine “100yr old” gazebo! 😂😂😂😂😂. I in my head was thinking 100 years! 100 years young! I’m from the northeast. Where I’ve worked on 300yr old homes…literally 300 years. I assured her that I would never let anything bad happen to their gazebo and I would make it look pretty. As far as I know. It’s still there. It’s a shame to see that one officer being such a dickhead in a place where the people were so nice to me and who I really was trying to help. That’s not unusual. Disabilities don’t necessarily need to stop the person from working, or be readily apparent. They can be things that effect the individual’s daily life or their enjoyment of daily life (PTSD for example). Those are often referred to as “invisible disabilities” because the individual outwardly appears fine. It’s also common for veterans to not realize they qualified for disability from the VA and receive back pay many years later, or be forced into a medical discharge and receive disability as a form of severance pay. He is absolutely baiting them by being deliberately vague. If he had answered the cop with "I'm showing my support for homeless veterans." when he was asked what he was doing, then I would agree with him. Since he refused to answer what his purpose for being there was, then the police officer was forced to infer what his intentions were based on his experience.

The shitty thing is those hundreds of thousands of dollars will come from the taxpayers in a small community. With 10% of their population living below the poverty line. I question the validity of any physical disability and the physical duties he needs to perform as a patrol officer. As for mentally, that is almost worse, I understand PTSD is a major issue. However, an officer with the power and responsibility in that position needs to be totally and completely mentally fit.

I like that Officer Wilder did whatever he could to make this whole thing about him. He had to make sure to mention that HE was a vet, that HE served for civil liberties for twenty years. Well all those years and he never understood the slightest bit of it. My bar for police officers is low in general, but Officer Wilder will most assuredly be the center of a lawsuit one day. @fintybadmanjunior What does it mean to take your morning constitutional? A “morning constitutional” meant a morning walk (good for the constitution/health). It was kind of an upper class or educated phrase, though. Then people started using it facetiously to mean a morning dump, as a way to disguise what they're doing and to make themselves sound more educated.

After Vietnam, I was a homeless veteran for a time. I went looking for an old comrade but he had died from exposure to Agent Orange. I was just minding my business, but the corrupt local sheriff tried running me out of town. He put me in jail on charges of vagrancy, resisting arrest, and possessing a concealed knife. His deputies let it all happen. It triggered my PTSD and I snapped, fought my way out and escaped into the woods. They tried hunting me down with rifles, dogs, and a helicopter, but I used my deadly skills to eliminate them one by one. Eventually they called in my former commanding officer, Colonel Sam Trautman. But it was just a ploy to get my guard down while they tried blowing up the mine I was holed up in. I had to shed more blood then, because long story short, ACAB.
