Shawn and Mel, glad that you both enjoyed the 5-satins, the song first came out in 1956, (I was in the 6th grade) released again in 1960. You're correct, all those songs were about love and/or broken hearts. You have to understand the time line, most radio stations wouldn't play rock & roll, let alone music by black artist. Not everyone had TV's in those days. Go on any street corner and you'd find a group of guys forming singing groups, girls as well, was good times under the circumstances in those days, as you've guessed by now I'm old school (77 yrs. old) enjoyed watching this with you guys, Ed.

Most of these Groups were One Hit Wonders in the sense they only had One Hit Record and faded into obscurity. Yet they would influence the next generation of Groups like The Temptations. There are so many for you to check out. The Penguins, Flamingos, Crests, Cadillacs, Drifters, Coasters, Monotones, Robins, The Silhouettes. Sadly enough most don't have the original Group Members and never got paid and even today there are Folks who say they are them but they are not but because they don't own the rights to the Group's Name they can't really do anything about it.

Shawn and Mel, this looks like a clip from a movie the 5 Satins were in. They are singing to the studio version that was on the radio. This is pure dowop. The harmonies are pure. I was just a little girl when this song was a hit on the radio. Now I'm 71 and grew up during the British invasion. But this song is just a testament on how good dowop music was way back then.

What makes this song even more sentimental is that it is autobiographical. Fred came up with the song while he was in the Army. He was missing his sweetheart while he was getting ready for guard duty and was looking at the stars and well the words and music started to come to him and well the rest is history.

Lead singer Fred Parris just, recently passed, it's been a couple of months. He said he wrote this song while on guard duty in the service. It was night time and things were very quiet, and he was inspired. The song was recorded in the basement of a church in New Haven. In 2017, The Satins went back to that same church and re-recorded the song with a companion video. BTW, they sounded great.
